A hotel with a nice piece of artwork

Unique Quality: This 5-star former Hilton has 25 stories, and can be easily reconized by a large fresco on the front wall of the building by a famous Cuban artist named Amelia Pel?ez. The air conditioned lobby and bar is a nice place to escape from the burning sun...which was exactly the reason I went in.

Directions: A few blocks from the University of Havana

Best view you can have in Havana hotel. Ask top floor, and view to Malecon if possible.
Rooms are good, but breakfast is not for hotel with 5*. There is wonderful disco and bar on the top floor.
And best views, of course.

Friendly Accommodation

by jkarlos about Sunia's

Just a few blocks from Hotel Habana Libre and the University of Havana is the house home to a very friendly cuban family, which would take care of you and your needs just like one of their own. If you enjoy walking and sightseeing this is the place to stay. You can walk all the way down to "Old Havana", however I recommend you take a cab on the way back since you may feel it's a little tiring going up the hill! It really isn't so bad, but I bet after walking for hours in Old Havana you will be exhausted enough!! Vedado, the modern section of Havana is only three blocks away. Great if you are there around the Film Festival in December.
The Room they have for rent has internal and external access to it, a single and a queen size bed, a rocking chair, fridge, A/C and warm water, a nice little patio with a couple of benches a table and chairs; very modest but definitely all you will really need while in Cuba. English is spoken in the house unless you want to practice your Spanish. This family is unbelievably friendly and funny. With them you will feel at home! Believe me!

A great start

by xaver about Casa Jorge

If you plan to spend your holidays in casas particulares and if your trip starts in Havana, try to choose a good house here.Infact casas owners have contact with other owners all over the country and they will try to book for you at their friends houses.Probably the Havana owner will get some commissions, but if, like me they let you have a great trip, you will really do not care much.Jorge was not at home when we arrived and his wife Vivian took care of us and she really let us have a great time in Havana and booked at some really nice places also in Cienfuegos and Trinidad.Rooms are not that big, and there is a king size bed in each bedroom, so, unless you travel with your partner, here the best choice is to take a room each. The bathroom, as in all casas I have been is just next to the room and is used only by the guests. We paid 25 cuc per person, about 18 € and breakfast was about 2 euro per person. We had some dinners with lobster and the price was 7 euro. It's located in Vedado just next to the Universidad and hotel Habana libre where you have a small supermarket where to buy water, beer cigaretts or whatever you may need, where you can change money at reception, where you can buy excursions. Each room has air conditioning and fan, pity it's on the 5th floor of a palace with no lift, so the first day with lagguages is not the best.

House Jorge Havana Cuba

by maurizio.ronta about House Jorge...the best appartment in Havana.

Mail : casa_jorge_cuba@yahoo.es . You can write in English, Spanish or Italian.

Beatiful legal house (Arrendador Inscripto) between Vedado and Centro Havana only 50 meters from the University, 100 meters from the hotel Habana Libre, 150 meters from the Malecon.
The house has 2 rooms with double beds, conditioned air, private refrigerator, bath with hot and cold water, kitchen, living-room with TV, stereo and telephone.
The house is central and it is located in one of the zones most nice and secure of Havana. Optimal position to walk also. If you'll rent a car, you'll park it in the street; a man look your car for only 1 Peso Convertible to a day.

This house is good for couple and single people.

If you are alone, you'll pay only for your bedroom and not also for the other bedroom.

Jorge will find for you the best solution. In fact he knows other houses with 1 and 2 rooms in the same building.

The price per room per night is 25 Peso Convertible.

In both the rooms there are the radio alarm and the adapters for the western thorns.

In the price is included the cleaning of room, the change of sheets and the towels.

If you want you can also ask for breakfast and dinner...all very cheap. The best appartment at a rasonable price.
Please send mail to casa_jorge_cuba@yahoo.es .

Shopping in Cuba

by rikusik

I will travel to Havana, Trinidad and Varadero. Please, advise me, which of these places is best (and cheapest) for buying:
1) original cigars
2) rum
3) souvenirs
and where exactly in these places are located the shops and markets for these items.
Thanks for every information

Re: Shopping in Cuba

by GrumpyDiver

I haven't been to Cuba for the past three years, but I assume things have not changed. Cuba has a command economy, which means all prices are centrally planned and controlled. What this meant that there was no difference in price or selection anywhere we went - same brands, same sizes, same prices.

So unless there is something that is out of stock, it really does not matter where you go to shop.

Re: Shopping in Cuba

by christer.davidsson

There's a good cigar shop with great service on 23d Ave (same street as Hotel Habana Libre). If you're walking down the avenue towards the Malecón it's on the right-hand side of the street. Ask someone and they'll be able to point it out. If I remember it right it's just opposite a building of various airline offices. Have fun!

Just got back last night and visited all those places.

For rum and cigars you are best to buy them at the end of your trip so you are not carrying them around as they are the same price anywhere you go (it is all nationalized). Even the airport prices are basically the same as anywhere else. Cheapest (big) bottle of rum will cost you approx $4 CUC, while the really pricey stuff can be around $40CUC.

There will be people everywhere on the street trying to get you to buy cigars from them at really cheap. They say they work in the factory or their brother works in the factory. This is a scam. The cigars are generally not good quality, and we had a friend who for kicks went and checked them out and the situation turned ugly when he didn't want to buy them. You are best to buy them legit from a cigar shop or factory store.

In terms of souvenirs, Trinidad is full of markets and art galleries. Definitely a great place for souvenir shopping. On the note of Trinidad, if you need a recommendation for an amazing Casa Particular, we stayed in the BEST one ever called "Hostal Amatista" on Calle Piro Guinart No 366 (across from the bell tower).
