The Sol rio is made of two hotels (the luna and the mares). It is adjacent to the 5* Paradiso but appears to have a much better beach. Whilst only a 3/4* it has several positives, the majority of staff are terrific, the rooms are okay especially on the Mares side (although the Luna is being set aside for refurbishment at present) and theres plenty of options for trips, even with alternative tour operators. The Dolphin swim is a must... of course and the tandem parachute jump appeared well booked. Entertainment is mediocre, especially if your not a fan of cuban music but the animation team appear to give it their all. For new travellers, if theres room in your case take t-shirts, clothes and anything surplus, the Cubans appreciate anything. Although schools and hosiptals are well looked after the villages/farmers appear much in need. The pools are superb as are the views from the top floors of the Mares. Rooms are looked after very well with clean towels and sheets. All inclusive drinks are very nice especially the cuban rum ones although service can be a little slow in the lobby areas at times. The restaurants are good especially lunch time snacks. At night there are many mosquitoes so take usual precautions.

Price was about $1300 CAN for a week in February, 2000. Next to Sol Rio De Luna. Both being all inclusive resorts, and owned by the same people, you could use the facilities of both. Meaning, more restaurants, and more pools. The beach was beautiful, and private.
Right next to it was a Nature Trail, providing great views of the resort and the ocean as well as native plants and wildlife.

PICTURE: Melia Rio De Oro, Playa Esmeralda. This is where I stayed last time in Holguin. Melia is gorgeous and features the most luxurious facilities in the Holguin area... Playa Esmeralda is shared by Melia, Sol Rio De Luna and Sol Rio De Mares Hotels(all great places!) Closes to this area is the aquarioum where you can go swimming with the dolphins. From these 3 hotels, walks are offered every morning at 8:00am and they include hiking up a hill, a local zoo, a Cuban Village, farm, ...etc. Great stuff! If you are staying at the Rio De Mares/Luna, you can share facilities and play at both resorts. I would recomand any of these 3 hotels!! For more pictures on this resort

we had a wonderful holiday at the sol club rio de luna hotel, and would recommend it to any one. the staff were friendly, polite and could not do enough for us. we found the food varied and for the most part good.
activities were numerous the beach was incredible. one draw back was the flight out but the holiday made it worth while. we would definitly return to the hotel. thomas cook rep ivanio was extremely helpful, many thanks to him for arranging more agreeable seating on the flight home

Well after just getting back on Saturday what can I say? The first week was great - location, food, staff, weather etc. We could not fault anything. The beach was out of this world and everywhere was clean. I thought this is too good to be true. ...
But on our second week - bad - ran out of food in one resturant, staff unwilling to serve at reception (we had to request a bottle of water four times), room always had towels, water, coffee etc missing, bar/waiting staff unwilling to serve, plates not cleared away in resturant, porters unwilling to get cases from room on departure day. There was one bar in the Luna in which you had to hand over a dollar before you would even get served!!!!! I thought you tipped after you had the service.
The location was great, just don't ask the Thomas Cook rep for any advice!!!! Be warned they don't give you any time to look over/think about the trips you want to book.
But after saying all of that and looking back I'm glad we expercienced it. We've got great tans and good memories of Havana/Cuba but I wouldn't go back.
The couple on the coach Friday hope you got back to MK ok.
Excellent value for money

Just returned from two weeks at the Mares side of Sol Rio de Luna y Mares resort, cuba. Had a fantastic time. Situation, food, people couldn't have been better. The beach is out of this world, white sand, blue sea. The pool is also very nice. We sunbathed by the pool as the wind was strong and we got sand blasted everytime we lay on the beach. It is a 2min walk from pool to the beach down some steps so we would go swimming in the sea lots during the day. There are four a la carte restaurants, Italian, Mexican, Mediterranean and Cuban. The Italian wasn't good but the others were delicious. We didn't eat in the buffet restaurant on the luna side as we heard it wasn't very good and the buffet restaurant on the Mares was excellent - fresh fish, meat, pasta, salad, bread and a huge selection of puddings!! Our room was great, huge bed, strong air conditioning, the bathrooms could do with a bit of updating but they were still large and had good lighting etc. They were cleaned everyday and water was put in the fridge. The entertainment was outstanding. Moulin Rouge night was great. We did the catarmaran excursion which was a good day out, included snorkelling and a lobster lunch. We swam with dolphins which was an amazing experience - we loved it so much we did it again in the second week. I would definitely recommend staying on the Mares side rather than the Luna. We will be going back maybe not next year but the year after.

We stayed at the Sol Club Rio de Mares Hotel. It was really nice and clean. The beach is gorgeous and my most fav' was the snorkeling right in front of the rock mountain near the hotel next door (S.C.Rio de Luna) The coral reef is about 20ft out and the water level was about 5ft deep. Great if you really can't swim.
