If you want to turn your vacation into a disaster, Kawama is the place. Note that this review is as honest as possible. We've been so many times to Varadero with the same hotel ratings but this one was I ever seen in the whole South trips we've done.
We booked a superior room for 3; we were given a small dirty room as far as possible from the center with 2 old stinky beds and a kids bed (and we were 3 adults). One of the beds sheet had fresh blood stains that diluted when we put some water on it (unwashed). The bathroom was broken and I'm not talking here about running water, but literality broken: the toilet seat had this huge crack and the bathroom was half under construction.
Since we arrived at night, the next morning we contacted reception that advised this IS our room. We asked to speak to the manager who didn't say a word except that they are overbooked and asked that we speak to the Nolitours agent if we are not happy. Fair enough, we were in a line-up complaining about the rooms; people had all kind of complaints but mainly for the atrocious state of the rooms. We were told someone will get back to us and by the end of the day we didn't get any news whatsoever. We had to endure the room for another night and next morning we had to yell at Nolitours agent AND the manager to have things changed. We were given another room that was acceptable but far from being "superior" as they advised.
This hotel is overall in very bad shape. Besides the small clean reception, the place is a catastrophe as soon as you enter through the door: old pools, fainting paints, lots of chairs but you are lucky if you find one that is not broken, bring your own beach towel because what you get there are ripped towels with large permanent stains.
We didn't go to Cuba and expect the food to be the best of all but here at Kawama it was way below average. Besides your eggs in the morning, nothing is enjoyable at the buffet. If you are too fancy about food, this is NOT the place to be. Besides a couple of dishes, there's nothing eatable. The A la carte restaurants were slightly better IF they ever let you get a reservation.
Varadero beach is on of the best in the world but the Kawama beach is not maintained: plastic cups from indifferent tourists left the day before, some pieces of cement here and there for some reason... Some locals told us that the sewage of Varadero is dumped at the level of Kawama (But please note, I can't confirm this). The air is fresh most of the day except in the morning where a big cloud of smoke invades the hotel area and comes from distant garbage dump that is burned almost every morning; when the sea breeze comes in, it pushes it away. The hotel is not to blame for this but reconsider the location. You are better off in the interior of the peninsula.
It is unfortunate we had this experience with Kawama. We went there with low expectations but we were not expecting it would be so bad. The only gesture of apology we got from the hotel was a coupon for A la carte restaurant. In other words, that 1 week we could go to the restaurant 3 times. Chatting with other tourists, they had invitations for 4 to 5 times during their stay... The cherry on top of the cake. Don't be fooled by this place or the "positive" reviews especially if you've been to Varadero before. You WILL be disappointed.
