Casa Deisys, Matanzas.: Good room and quiet....

Taken to this casa by her father after being given the wrong address. This was a fine stay for 2 days here, good cooking and a very nice person. Also had a jam session with me on guitar and her son Jaimé on piano, good for a laugh. Very big room of around 22 sq. metres plus a WC/Bath next door. Hidden away in back streets, it is in a very quiet area although for some it may be a bit far from the centre of town.

We paid 20CUC for the double, 8CUC dinner and 4 CUC b/fast each.

La Panchita, casa particular: Matanzas City, Cuba Unique Accommodation

La Panchita is a Cuban heritage designated wooden structure near Tenis Beach, and overlooks the beautiful Bay of Matanzas. The second floor apartment has 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, sitting room, bathroom, wrap around balcony, a spectacular view of the Bay and a breathtaking sea breeze.

Acquired by Eduardo Bellido for his wife, Panchita León (hence the name), the building is steep with history, and is a famous structure. Playa is a quiet community teeming with local life - the sounds of roosters and street vendors on bicycles, or pushing carts with bread, onions & garlic, vegetables, local honey, fresh squeezed orange juice, everything available in the season - delicious.

The owner's house is just a few doors away where you can get scrumptious home-cooked Cuban meals, laundry service, and advice regarding local attractions (it is not far from Cuevas de Bellamar), taxi service, or any other interest you may have. A very friendly and welcoming family, there is always someone available for translation if your Spanish is not up to par.

Since the structure is historic, it is a unique place to stay. Restored in recent years, the original building was purchased in the United States and assembled in Cuba.

Tell them Peter Pan made an internet recommendation!

Hotel E Velasco: In the heart of the City of Matanzas, Cuba

We took a lovely tour of this beautiful small, old hotel with 13 standard rooms (11 double and 2 twin) and 4 junior suites. Air conditioning, telephone, cable TV, hairdryer, minibar, and alarm clock radio in each comfortable, room with grand windows overlooking the Libertad Park. The restaurant offers international cuisine, and the lobby bar is inviting. There is also a cafeteria, internet room. This is a charming hotel, about 65CUC per night. Although we stay in casa particulars in Matanzas, this does look like a great place for a special night (anniversary, birthday perhaps?). Built with marble, granite and precious woods in 1902 and restored in 2011, this building is one of the most important historic sites in the old city.

Casa Marylin Matanzas: All those cockerels

This place is around a 10 min walk from the bus station in Matanzas and around a mile from the centre of Matanzas.

Marilyn arranged a taxi pick up for me from Varadero airport and this went smoothly.

The location is in a residential area with little of immediate interest. Access is via a chained up gate out front and then up a set of steps up the side of the house to the 2 guest rooms. Dinner was offered and I accepted I have to say that with the general standard of food across Cuba being unimpressive, the dinner I had here was among the best in 2 weeks in Cuba, also a huge portion.

The room was basic but the bed was comfy. The biggest issues were being eaten by mosquitos (don't believe that the mosuitos have been fumigated out of Cuba, I had a dozen bites on me by the morning) and the noise from outside. Neighbours were noisy in the street impacting any chance of an early sleep. The biggest issue with noise though was the cockerels. There seemed like a whole portfolio of them and they started from around 4 am. This isn't something that can be blamed on Marilyn's, I could have stayed in any house around there and the noise would have been exactly the same.

I eventually got a hot water shower but it took some help from the hosts. It seemed to require a phd in goodness knows what to eventually the hot water to come out of there but it did work.
