 | | | | Sol Sirenas Coral Resort: Sol Sirenas Coral | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Sol Sirenas Coral resort consists of 2 resorts next to one another. The Sol Coral & Sol Sirenas. I stayed at the Sol Coral, and I LOVED it! I would 100% recommend staying here. *There were many families & couples children will easily find other friends, as will the adults *Restuarants: buffet, Italian, grill/Cuban, Chinese The food was good-lots of variety, even for the picky eaters *Musicians played in the Buffet restaurant during dinner singing wonderful Cuban songs *The buffet restaurant has a great patio over looking the pool * MOST staff were on top of refilling your drinks & clearing dishes *Right on beach-2 minute walk from main building *Bars on the beach, pool & in main lobby *2 shows at night in the entertainment pavallion *Live jazz in the lobby (evening) *Bar in the lobby-always full, good place to meet people *Rooms are spacious, clean (in my experience), cable tv. The floors and bathroom were cleaned everyday. My safety box worked perfectly. Sockets in the walls were clearly labeled with voltage. Although I have heard to the contrary, the walls are not paper thin. Never once did I hear sound coming through the walls. My maid was friendly & helpful. She would leave me notes & make my fresh towels into different shapes. This before I would leave her tips *Many beach activities (ex Volleyball and aqua fitness) were scheduled everyday & there were announcements informing people when they would start. *The anamacion team were great, never annoying. They were there to entertain, but never bothered people. I found Sol Coral perfect place to get away for RnR without being bothered & annoyed by loudness, guests & too much activity. My biggest problem with staying at the Sol Coral was the difficulty in getting bottles of water. It's an all inclusive resort yet they were very stingy with handing out bottled water. Often I would have to ask and wait a long time to get it from the staff at the buffet. It was annoying, although ultimately I always managed to get my hands on a bottle.
The pool at the Sol Coral is one of the best features of the resort. *The pool (see Photo) has two beautiful pools attached by a bridge. *The free form pools have different depths from 0ft, 1ft, to about 5ft at different spots *Both sides have a wading area perfect for little ones. *Since there is so much pool space, waterpolo games can go on one side, and it doesn't disturb anyone else. *Lots of full exposure to the sun areas by the pool (even a platform perfect for tanning) *Lots of palm trees and shady areas too *Even during the busiest times of the day there are always pool chairs available and the pool is never overcrowded. Rooms have ocean views from both sides of the resort. One of the resorts closer to downtown Varadero (about 20-25 min. walk to downtown markets etc). Taxis about $4. A mini golf course, tennis courts, gym, beauty parlor, massages available too All the services at the Sol Sirenas and Sol Coral side are available to everyone at both resorts. The Sol Sirenas has wonderful pathways all over the grounds, and palm trees everywhere. Secluded hammocks are found everywhere. There are also Gazebos on bamboo stilts with benches-perfect for some quiet time. ***I REMOVED THE PICTURE BECAUSE A RUSSIAN TRAVEL AGENCY STOLE MY PICTURE OFF THIS SITE. | | | | Maritim Varadero Beach Resort: Iberostar Playa Alameda | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Renamed in May 2005 to "Playa Alameda" (formerly called "Maritim Varadero Beach Resort" or "LTI Varadero"), I loved it here! The grounds of the Alameda are beautiful! So many brightly coloured buildings, blue, orange, even pink. It lends nice coloured glows to the whole place. Every single area can be described as pretty. The grounds are large and full of palm trees, it feels more like a Spanish town than a resort. The beach--long long walk on endless sand. The room we had was on the ground floor, the sheets and spread were very clean, beautiful and the air conditioning worked really well. The reddish marks on the edges of some of the pillows are from the pressing/ironing machines. Humongous bathtub! With separate shower stall. The buffet was excellent as far as I was concerned. The roast beef was a little chewy but there was so much to choose from that you could just push something to the side of your plate and go back to try something different. The pasta was excellent. So were the breads, fish, and veggies. The drinks were good, strong. My only complaint would be that the bar service was slow (one guy in particular) and the cups were too small, so you usually had to order 3 or 4 drinks at a time. Bring a big travel mug with you, this is the best way to go, especially when you're in the beach area. You also had to wait in the lineups for coffee while they prepared each cup individually. It made for some cranky people in the mornings. There should be a coffee machine in the lobby area where you could just get your own. Tips don't speed up service it seems, I think the money goes to the hotel. The bartenders don't seem to notice at all who tips and who doesn't. Give the best server a $20 at the end of the week and save yourself the hassle of carrying small bills around. In your room fridge you'll find: 2 cans of cola, 2 sprite-type drinks, and 2 cans of beer. Would definitely go back. A+++++++ See my Varadero Travelogues for more photos from the Maritim. | | | | Paradisus Varadero: Gorgeous All Inclusive Resort Compare Rates NEW! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
I had been longingly reading about this hotel more or less since it opened, and so I was delighted when I had the opportunity to go to Cuba in late December 2007. You know how it is, you build a holiday on a dream, and I had visions of the lovely split level bedrooms and hand painted wall friezes of this hotel. You can therefore imagine my shock and disappointment to arrive there shortly before midnight on 27th December only to discover that the hotel had no reservation for my Mother and I. We had received confirmation of our reservation in May 2007. It transpires that sometime in October the hotel decided not to honour our reservation and claim to have informed our Cuban travel rep of this. Nobody bothered to inform me. The hotel had been paid for by me in advance. They re-allocated me to their sister hotel, the Princesa del Mar - but that's the subject of a seperate review. In the meantime, they make no secret of the fact that their reservations cannot be depended on!!!!! Suffice to say that we were very unhappy at the P del M and were re allocated to the Paradisus Varadero after one week and stayed there for four nights. We absolutely loved the place. Because of my initial experience with the hotel it is hard to tick the correct satisfaction box, and so I have ticked it on the basis of my impression on staying there, uncoloured by the reservation issue.
From the moment you enter the elegant and vast wood and water lobby of this stunning resort you know you're somewhere special. The lobby bar is always busy but never overcrowded, and a variety of live music thrums in the air, varying as the day and night progresses. Not only is this hotel directly on the beach, but most of the rooms in the low rise complex of 16 unit bungalows are beachfront. The beach is long and clean and very well stocked with shady umbrellas and sunbeds. Pedaloes, catamarans, banana boats, canoes and other water sports are at your disposal, all included in the holiday price. The atmosphere is full of fun - for all ages. Giant chess and draughts occupy shady corners of the gardens, numerous beach and pool bars serve generous cocktails, and again music fills the outdoor air without being intrusive. For me the highlight was the ecological reserve that directly adjoined the hotel. I spent many happy hours here with my trusty camera, photographing coral and fossils and shells. The staff are friendly, and when you are offered and hand woven palm leaf hat you need not automatically suspect that you have to pay for it - this is a genuine gift from a gardener or worker in the hotel. Food was really good and although the food in the buffet was more or less the same every night, there was terrific choice. There are also five or six a la carte restaurants to choose from, including Italian, steakhouse, Cuban, Romantic etc. Although a little tired with age, the rooms are very pretty indeed and are well furnished. The beds are a little hard, but you will nevertheless sleep soundly as you will be tired out from the delightful activities that surround you. The main pool is enormous and freeform in shape, and there is also an olympic sized dedicated swimming pool. A little warning - the water is always freezing. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel - but keep checking your reservation to the last!!!!! | | | | Sol Sirenas Coral Resort: All inclusive non-luxury nice accomodation | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
First of all, if you are looking for luxury, don't book this resort. If you, like I was, are only looking for a nice place to stay 3-4 days enjoying the beach and the sun with average facilites and a not so high prize, this could be a good choice. It's a resort with two parts (in fact there were formerly two hotels). We stayed at the Sirenas side, but we were allowed to use all the services at the Coral side too. Buffet seemed to be a little better at Coral side, for example. However, Sirenas swimming pool was better and less overcrowded than Coral's. There are other 4 restaurants, mediterranean, oriental, italian and creole, but you must book in advance in the morning at Club House. We tried only oriental, and we liked it. I wouldn't recommend this hotel if your are staying a long time (a week or more...). Perhaps for a long stay I would search for a more luxurious hotel. But for a few days and if you want to trip a bit (that was what we did), I found it nice enough, although not brilliant.
The beach is one of the better points of this hotels: one of the better zones in Varadero. Furtermore, there is very little people, so it's really quite. The staff was really lovely, even without tipping. There are very few Spanish-speaking clients at the hotel, so I guess we had some privileged treatment, but perhaps they were equally nice with everyone.
Paradisus Varadero found itself overbooked and shunted us to stay in this, their sister hotel. We had already arrived at PV and seen its glorious reception and public facilities, so as soon as I arrived at the silent lobby of the P del M I knew I was going to be disappointed. Although the hotel is now advertised as a Paradisus "adult over 18 only" hotel, it was sold as a couples only hotel up to December 2007. The hotel is in two sections - the standard hotel and the Royal wing. Each has its own checkin and reception building, pool, restaurants etc. P del M claims to be five star, but as the Royal is five star and allegedly superior then how can P del M convince us of its five star rating? So miserable was I here that I tried to upgrade to the Royal Wing. It proved impossible. They refused to put a second bed in the room. Perhaps my misery could be attributed to the fact that I couldn't get a reservation at the spa for three days, or the fact that we were served mouldy bread for breakfast; perhaps because the drinks were watered down so much that all you could taste was ice, or the food poisoning that glued me to my bed for two nights; maybe it was the romantic approach to New Year's Eve that caused Mum and I to drag our heels back to our room at 10pm, or the fact that the pool was too shallow to swim in. Shall I go on? I could fill the pages here with negatives about this hotel. Withered flowers in the public areas, stained tablecloths, unironed sheets and table cloths, chipped glasses, grease that dripped from the ceiling as I stood waiting for my omelette at breakfast, running out of orange juice and soft drinks, no sausage for breakfast after New Year's Eve (any day), the mosquitos that infested the place and had me covered with throbbing bites. Be aware that you need to book well in advance for the speciality restaurants. The food in the French restaurant is good, in the Italian restaurant is mediocre, and in the buffet is recycled leftovers.
The resort is nicely laid out. Ask for a room in block 6 overlooking the Royal wing, as these have by far the best view. Shun the rooms in Block 1 overlooking the car park of the hotel next door. The beach is stunning with crystal clear pond like water. Staff are wonderful - here, the further you go down the skill ladder the friendlier the staff. Our maid was the best maid I have ever had. Thanks Marilin! Be wary that the pretty grounds are traversed by cobbled paths and so unsuitable for disabled people like Mum.
