Hotel Kawama
by Linse
It´s a fine hotel with a lot of activities, the staff are friendly and they really try to make your stay as good as possible. It´s a really big hotel and we got a map when we arrived so we could find our way around. There are a lot of different rooms and it´s nice standard rooms with all you need. You can´t be closer to the beach when you stay at hotel Kawama. It´s an all inclusive hotel and there are 1 buffet restaurant where you can eat and 2 times per week you are there you can make a reservation at 3 other restaurants: Italian, international and Cuban. We tried the Italian and the Cuban restaurant but theres not much to choose from in the menu so we desided that there was more for us on the buffet restaurant and desided to eat there the 2. week we were there.

Since this was my first trip I have nothing else to compare to. So this is based on my stay.I have read how bad the food is overall in cuba, well it wasn`t that bad there tended to be alot of chicken at dinner , flavor was fine, I`m not a fussy person, so food would have to be pretty bad.I always liked having omlets for breakfast. The rooms are spaced out in small buildings around the complex, which I didn`t mind as we would walk along the beach at night back to the room. The staff was fine the bartenders were good. One lady at the front desk was like a sargent. for the bar bring a large glass, or mug as the plastic glasses hold 5 ounces.
The room was clean ,one problem we had was the shower head came out of the wall ,but it was repaired the next day.
Would I go back and stay there yes I would.
after talking to different people you get different opions, one couple after 6 stays at different hotels said that the food may be a little better at some hotels but over all they found that it didn`t make much difference. Some places may be better for kids , other places may be more party like.

Kawama - don't let other reviews put you off - fantastic place
by TripAdvisor Member flo99
Kawama for 2 weeks in March 2004 was a brilliant base to see Cuba from. It had everything - white sands, blue sea, good food - giving excellent value for money (we had a half price last minute deal - if we had paid brochure price we may have been a little disappointed). If you have any problems the staff want to hear about them and deal with them quickly. It's not 4 star , nor is it advertised as such so don't expect waiters bringing large cocktails in glasses to the pool area ! It is safe and clean and the gardens are kept to a high standard. It feels very safe even for women travelling alone. The 'smell' from the oil platforms others have talked about was hardly noticeable. We would definately go back.
Italian food

Cuban food isn´t the best food I have tasted but you can find some restaurants that are quite good though you musn´t expect to get a big steak.
In 1 end of Varadero close to Hotel Kawama we found and italian restaurant where the food was really good, the staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice.
kawama is a lovely place for all who wants to enjoy animacion like sea relaxatio

i went to kawama 3 times in 9 months because i love this place and i met alot of friends there as much animation team as much of other people like waitress and cook and barman everybody are nice and everytime i come back they reconize me and it's very good to be there with them, the service is very good ,the food is very fine and there are a snack bar where you can eat when you want even in the night ,the discotheque is very nice and the dj too ,is my friend and if you go there ask for him his name is Lester ,he have music in his skin .if you like to dance there are dancing lesson with yuri an excellent dansor and levis ,i miss him alot he gave me alot of plesure with dance like salsa ,merengue and firstly bachata.the food are with a great variety and italian restaurant with the chief (Rocco) is very good.i will return there to get marry i april and i don,t think i will have the taste to change the place, i like to go there because alot of accessibility, street to walk near of alot of things to do.go there you will have alot of fun with animacion and service warranty !!!
if you go there just say hi for me to chuchi the barman of the nightclub there in kawama ,i made alot of drinks by myself and it was very funny with him. you have to go to eat at sangria some streets farther of kawama it's open 24 hours by day so you can go when you want. swimming with dolphin also is good at the dolphinario and try to go to the catamaran it's a good excursion to do .so if you meet someone there just talk about josee from canada(quebec) and they will talk to you about many things.

DO NOT GO! You risk the chance of "Bait and Switch". Many of us that traveled to Cuba over reading week were set up to stay at Club Kawama by different Travel Agencies. The brutal reality set in when we arrived to Cuba and were taken to a different resort called Club Karey, Kawama's Brother resort 1.5 Km down the road. The two resorts in no way resemble each other. Just to name a few things about Club Karey; fly infested dining room, bed bugs, no bottled water, dirty beach, a couple of activitities and one small pool.
Nice Vacation!

Looking for a quiet and relaxing vacation, Club Kawama is the place to go! There were a lot of people staying there that have been coming to this resort since the 1970s. This resort was built during the 1930s.
There are a mixture of new and old buildings. I liked the fact that it was a smaller resort. Wonderful beach and pool area! I would suggest stay in the villa section. The rooms are more up to date and brighter.
Food was ok. Well kept grounds and always felt safe. Go on a Havana, well worth the money. We booked the tour with a man on the beach named George $35.00 US. He was great! Take a tour on the local double decker tour bus $5.00 US for a day pass. Gives you a chance to see other resorts and visit several flea markets. The pictures I have seen of the resort are not that attractive. The resort is much more beautiful than the pictures. Have a great holiday!

just returned from 2 weeks in club kawama. What can I say, definitely not what I expected . Food was boring and poor at start but improved slightly by the end of our stay. The rooms were very and I mean very basic and furnishings were old and tatty in the room. Oh and if anyone gets my room excuse the battle zone of splattered mosies. Do not and I repeat do not go here with without repellant for bodies and a mosie killer for the room, they are evil, we splattered about 20 one night before we could go to bed,
On the upside beach was wonderful what a shame the tourists were too lazy to put their rubbish in the bin. Staff on the whol were pleasant and tried very hard if somewhat slow.
Very Good for the resources the have to work with!

Before people make any judgements of the hotel and food we have to realize that you are travelling to a 3rd world country that has very limited access to milk and beef and many other things we take for granted. In fact residential Cuban's only get milk until age seven. So if your pancakes are not quite fluffy enough because they used water instead of milk that is part of the experience. All inclusive does NOT mean cruise ship food but the food is edible and not horrible at the buffet. My advise to travellers is to take a bottle of hot sauce or some other spice to add to the food. Excellent fresh bread and absolutley outstanding very juicy fresh grapefruit. Fresh made to order omlettes and fried eggs are also great. Sometimes the coffee machine, that had very good coffee, ran out of milk so be prepared to have the occasional java black. The Cristal beer is very good. The house red wine is palatable but took a couple of times to get the taste. It was from Spain.Ala Carte restaurants are from good to excellent and I advise (seroiusly!) to book them when you first arrive. The best was the Gran Canal where even the kitchen staff looked out to see your response to a new creation. The shrimp cocktail served inside a pineapple is very worthy. The steak is quoted as filet but is more sirloin in quality.People on here that are complaining about the occasional waft of an unpleasant smell are correct. This is from the still water across the road from the hotel and natural decomposition and not sewers. We had the same smell in Cancun from the lagoon there and we were at the 5 star Omni Cancun. The staff at Club Kawama for the most part are excellent. It is like anywhere else when you travel (even Vancouver!) their are people who are naturals at customer service and those who would be better suited in a back office. Special kudos to our maid Dora who was very gracious and very thankful for all of the small gifts we gave instead of cash. Soaps and school supplies are very much appreciated. Take all of your little hotel soaps you have accumulated. The animation staff (activities) are all very positive and upbeat. Had a great time playing beach volleyball! Thanks Levis!! The person manning the Hobie Cat and peddle boats is shy but not rude. Book the Hobie Cat the day before going. We missed out on that. The staff at the lobby bar are a little suspect with no smiles and you do feel like giving them a shake or asking management to put them in a back office!!As for booking with Last Minute Vacations we were bounced the day before we left Vancouver to the Club Carey, another Gran Caribe resort that owns Kawama. We were quite upset with the travel company and when we arrived we were dropped off at Club Karey. When we went to check in they said we were at the Kawama. Phew, there is a huge difference between the two hotels and Club Karey from face value should be rated as a 1 or 2 star. You do NOT have access to any of the Club Kawama facilities. We suspect we got into the Kawama because of a snowstorm in Atlantic Canada the delayed flights for a couple of days.Since this review is of the hotel and not the booking agent overall this resort delivers its 3+ rating. Some of the other hotels farther down the beach have glitzy shows and an American hotel like atmosphere but Club Kawama delivered a more personalized, fun, secure place without all the U.S. like hype. And the pool.....wow...
once in a lifetime trip, not to be missed

Returning from 2 wks with family @ all inc club kawama. The pools and gardens were maintained every day. the staff were very friendly.the hotel is on the beach which is lovely, clean and private. BOOK AHEAD AND REQUEST SUPERIOR ROOMS so as not to be dissappointed.ours were in a lovely court yard and were superior as stated, but other visitors had very basic rooms .the gardens are beautiful, full of tropical fruits and flowers, the evening air was heavy with the sent of jasmin, lemons and troplical flowers. take advantage of trips as a guide is a must as you miss so much otherwise.the catermaran trip was fab, havanna is a must, bit of an eye opener, watchout 4 the beggars and pickpockets, swimmin with dolfins in trinadad was fantastic, ALL GOOD VALUE 4 MONEY. buy gifts from the local markets on the avenue as u wont find any cheaper. ENTERTAINMENT @ THE HOTEL QUITE BASIC, STARTS TOO LATE. met many lovely people from all around the world. can recommed cuba 4 a visit 2 anyone, but b prepared 4 a basic diet.take advantage of the $5 bus tour n see the local sights. WE visited in the hottest season, very humid, very heavey, but the most amazing TROPICAL RAIN STORMS

Hey there! I went last year and had a great time as I am sure you will too. What we did was befriended a local who worked for the hotel we stayed at (Club Kawama) - he was in charge of the non-motorized sports. He owned his own car and took us to Havana. We payed for his dinner and drinks and it worked out fine. My suggestion would be to become friends with the locals and ask around. You will find that there are a lot of willing people. Have a great time!

Hi Sara. . . ya I guess the best thing to do is "sweet talk" the locals:) I did that in Antigua and had a blast.
Looking forward to it - hope it's HOT!!
Thanks.

My husband and I genuinely like to meet people where ever we go and have met so many wonderful people. I think people can sense the difference between "Sweet Talk" and sincerity. Good luck and have fun.
