Hola

An option for transport. When you exit the termanil there will be reps for various tour compnies that do the all inclusive packages for the resorts. Approach one or several and ask if they have room on their bus. These are pre-arrange land transfer for the package people. Used to be $10 CUC. The rep and bus driver share the money. I have taken cabs with and without the meter running and the basic cost is $20 CUC from airport to the bridge over the canal (beginning of the penincula and then $1 CUC per km after that The peninsula is approx 20kms long. To Solymar (at the end of town) is approx 6 to 8 kms.

Solymar is located in an excellent area. Close to everything.
My suggestion is to talk a walk one day along the beach to see the site.
Looking at the sea walking to the left takes you toward town.

Go as far as you feel comfortable then find a walkway between buildings and walk to the main drag, the walk back to Solymar seeing the street stuff.

There are numerous shops and restaurants along the way.

At a small beach grill at Albacora Restaurant there ias a guy named Eduardo that make excellent mojitos. A funny guy and excellent to talk with
There is a strret there between Albacora and Baracuda restaurants that takes you to the main drag (Ave 1 ra) and comes out directly across the street from Josone Park. Another must see site, 4 excellent rstaurant in the park.
Dantes (italian) el Retiro (steak and seafood more upscale, la gruta del vino (candle light at night with good wine and skewers of meat) and then my favorite la Campana which is Cuban Cuisine (try the ropa vieja).

Calle 62 is near by as well, once you know where it is you can go one evening for music and dancing. Open air cafe with no cover, cheap drinks and dancing spills out into the street. Many locals will come and listen to the music and dance in the street.

Close to this location as well is Casa del Ron (rum museum) wher you can purchase a wide variety and even taste samples.

Travel Tips for Varadero

VARADERO - VACATION RESORT

by LoriPori

Varadero began to be developed as a vacation Resort in the 1940"s, but in the last ten years, its network of hotels and facilities have diversified and grown. Its main attraction has always been its marvelous beaches and has exceptionally good conditions for scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, yachting and other water sports.
VARADERO is part of a peninsula that juts out into the calm waters of the Atlantic. It's a 21 kilometre strip of fine white sand and is constantly cooled by tropical breezes. Average year-round water temperature is 24 - 26 degrees C.

Relax and go with the flow.

This is not a place for fancy nightime clubbing or great sit down dinners. Very casual and laidback. Cuba has wonderful people and gorgous scenery. The people live for the large part in poverty conditions. They don't know any differently and are basically happy with what they have. Treat them with dignity and you will find them very welcoming. Whatever your political views of Cuba, keep them to yourself when here and just enjoy the fact that you are here in this very historical country.

Fill your bags with used unwanted clothing to hand out- it is much appreciated! Bring lots of flip -flops. Old navy, Dollarama and Walmart have cheapies that you can collect and use as tips. There are a lot of shoeless people in Cuba. Also bring any unwanted clothing. I saw the women getting lots but we tried to bring mens stuff as well. One of the guards asked us for clothing and told us he worked 24hours a day then had to travel 3 hours each way on his one day off for $13/month! Make-up, shampoo, cond. lotions all are apprectiated as tips to the locals. childrens stuff - toys and candy and crayons are a big hit to give out.
Cuban pesos come in two denominations. One is a tourist peso that is dirty cheap to us. But the locals have thier own pesos that work out to a 3:1 ratio or something like that- which means that everything is priced in tourist pesos and they have to come up with 3x the amount to be able to afford to buy it. So a $3 lipstick is really $15 to them.

Anything you would need from a drugstore..

by irishgalmtl

shaving cream, razors, Mosquito Repellent, afterbite, tooth paste, You name it that you might need bring it as I had never seen any drugstore. Extra film if you think you might need it. Cuba is not a wealthy country and does not have everthing other countries have.
