Do not go here!!!

Just got back from a week at this hotel.

Do not go here. Please. I know it is cheap and represents a good deal - but believe me when it will be better if you saved for a little bit longer and sprung for something with a better reputation / star rating.

The resort looks like it was built pre-revolution and hasn't been updated since. The rooms are extremely sketchy - broken fixtures, doors, windows and it looks like something out of a Gulag.

The resort itself is well away from the beach in the shady underside of Varadero city proper. You'll need to walk a few blocks to even see the ocean.

Worst points:

- the Staff are absolutely and totally apathetic. They don't give a rat's @ss about the guests - especially the front desk staff. They actively dont want to talk to you and when they do, they expect to be tipped every time. Very, very poor attitude.

- The food is mediocre at best. The dining hall is more like a cafeteria and is always short of plates, cutlery and glasses. Be prepared to have to drink your coffee (if you can get it, which is rare) out of a soup bowl, if at all.

WORST POINT
- The resort is very popular with Russians, due to its low cost. I hadn't met any Russians prior to this trip and was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Don't - they are the embodiments of the stereotype. Rude, loud, crude and violent and hammered 24/7. We were actually threatened several times with violence, and the staff does nothing. Do you want to spend your holiday surrounded by that? They monopolized every area of the resort and bullied anyone they could. It made the trip a nightmare.

The bar is supplied only with cheap, dirty booze that you will very quickly get sick of.

We had things go missing from our room.

Oh and you will be woken up every day by the sound of roosters crowing at 5am. I'm not kidding. Thats if the shouting fights of the locals who live in/around the building or the roar of vehicles going past at all hours. dont wake you first Dont expect to get any full nights' sleep staying here.

This place was a hole. Maybe once, 40 years ago, it was nice, now its run down, poorly staffed, in the middle of a crummy town. Its attractive largely to barbaric Russians and older people who stay for long periods of time (ie. months) because of its cheap price.

Please. Save a few hundred more dollars and go somewhere else. Ideally find yourself a resort that is not in Varadero city proper - there are plenty on the outskirts away from many of the problems listed here.

Mar Del Sur (in Veradero)

by Fizzbot about Mar Del Sur (in Veradero)

We paid $1750.00 Canadian (about $1200.00 U.S.) for three weeks accomodations. This included buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner, rum-based drinks and draft beer, transfer from Verardero airport, and our flight from Toronto. This Hotel was the best of four low budget hotels. We chose a longer stay at a cheap hotel rather than a short stay at a fancy hotel. There is a nice pool area, and a nice lounge area. The service and food is mediocre but with the money we saved, we could afford to eat out whenever we wanted. A cafe at first&13th has a 1/4 chicken and rice for $1.50 U.S. a beer is 1.00 U.S. The maid made our bed and cleaned our bathroom daily. The rooms have 2 twin beds and a balcony.

Advice advice

by poloper

Has anyone stayed in either Mar Del Sur, Oasis Hotel or Tortuga in Varadero? I want to stay in a budget hotel and spend most of my money on excursions? Are these places atleast worth staying in??

Also, how far are these hotels from the main town, is it walking distance? Lastly, is the water safe for children to swim or is there a dropoff that is dangerous for children. Thank you for all the advice.

how to plan a month long vacation in varadero

by vanessa_anna

Hi ! I am planning on going to varadero for one month in May 2006 and I don't really know which way is cheaper : Buying a plane ticket and renting a hotel room for 1 month or taking 2 all inclusive package deals for 2 weeks back to back...I don't even know if the second option is possible. I also plan to spend time in a casa particular... I would like to get information on how to plan a long stay in varadero...so far I heard of the Mar del Sur that has appartements. Thanks in advance !!

Why would you go to Varadero? Not Cuba, it could be any place. I would not recomend it. If you want to stay for a month and like palm beaches (of course!)you should go to Trinidad town, 5 hours with a comfortable bus from Havana )or 6 hours from the airport in Varadero)You could stay at the beach hotels just outside town, a taxi (cheap) brings you in to the town when you want and you find a charming place with narrow streets, nice people, music bars and atmosphere. Or you couls stay at a casa particulare in the town centre and go to the beach in the morning. It is wonderful.
Or some time in Trinidad and some in Varadero if you need to go there. I could recomend you a smaller and cheaper hotel where it it is at least a touch of Cuba. Or part of the time in St Clara, close to Trinidad. Write me if you want more info.

Check with your travel agent. I did some some very good prices for long term stays in Varadaro for 28 day. It's cheap to eat out and drink there, but price in town are so cheap for the AI's you might be just as well off doing that, and still be able to eat out on your own. But I think after a 2 weeks you will be a little bored in Varadero. It's nice but it's a long strip of nothing but hotels and tourist. Safe but dull. But if you just want to relax it a good spot. Enjoy.

Varadero...good spot to stay for a week and rest. But is the most touristical place in cuba. Is like a country inside other country. I recomend U to rent a casa particular maybe in Matanzas or Havana, better in Havana. And after that, just use all the time U´ll have that is a month (not everyone has so much time) to visit cuba and all it´s beatiful places. Check out my travel pages and U´ll find lot of info, pics and tips on places to visit and what to do.

U can still manage to stay in Varadero if it is really cheap and starting from there, visit Havana, Pinar del Rio, Trinidad, Zienaga de Zapatas and many other places.

I used to live in Havana for 28 years so I left many good friends there. If U need help, someone to show the hidden places in Havana or just someone ot chat for an hour and have a drink, I can recomend U some friends. Write me if U want the contact info... have fun!

Travel Tips for Varadero

Beaches but beware the mosquitoes and sand fleas

by Soozay

You will love the beaches at Varadero. I've never seen such beautiful blues and greens from the warm ocean. If you're lucky enough and the sky turns dark with rain it intensifies the colours even more.
I could sit for hours and hours under the palm leaved umbrellas reading a good book, getting some rays, or going swimming in the ocean.
When the sun is about to set make sure you wear some mosquito repellant. Some of the tourists got dozens of bites. If you take a walk at sunset in the sand or by the sea grasses, that's when they come out to feast. Hmmmm...it's got to be digging my feet in the warm fine white sand and gazing out at the ocean. Pure paradise it is!

Casas in general...

by rafgys

‘Casas particulares’ in Varadero are illegal because the government wants tourist to stay at expensive hotels. Anyway, whether you’re in Cuba or anywhere else in the world… laws have been made to be broken! So there are lots of people around offering you casas.

If you speak any Spanish, you may get lucky and end up at some casa… paying 20 or 25 CUC, while the cheapest hotel charges 40 or 50 CUC!

Winter Can Freeze

by SabrinaSummerville

We were stunned to be caught in the coldest spell Cubans could recall in living memory. Temperatures dropped to an incredible 6 degrees for three days. The only warm item of clothing I had with me was a fleece jacket - goodness was I glad for that! If you're travelling there in Winter, bring a couple of warm things just in case. If travelling in Hurricane season, bring lots of white clothes as you will be advised to wear white if caught in a hurricane. Bring tons and tons of anti histamines (and start taking them before you travel) as the mozzies here are prolific and nasty. Also carry a plug in mozzie repellant and a spray. Bring your own hair conditioner and favourite cosmetics - these are difficult to purchase. I found it impossible to buy cotton wool anywhere! Stock up on prescription medications - Cuba has highly trained and excellent Doctors, but medications can be hard to obtain. You would be well advised to bring plenty of memory for your digital camera - it can be hard to buy. Bring comfortable shoes for exploring the sharp shelled beaches combing for shells or for exploring the ecological reserves.

INSECT REPELLENT: DON'T FORGET IT

by hojasdehierba

If you travel to Varadero, don't forget an insect repellent, especially if you are going on rainy season. Mosquito bites almost ruined (well, they tried, but didn't suceed) my holidays, so protect yourself.
