Cars, hotels and favourite places

Car hire is not a problem - just take care to read contract and make note of any scratches, missing aerial etc. There are very few road signs or speed restriction signs, but the roads have little motorised traffic, there are petrol stations on main routes and plenty of people willing to give you directions. If you do pick up hitchers make sure all luggage is out of reach. A good alternative to car hire is to use the Viazul buses, very comfortable and reliable, although not terribly frequent. They have a website if you google Viazul.
There are lots of hotels in Havana, although few in centre have pools (Sevilla, Nacional do, but are expensive) - we treated ourselves to 1 night at the Sevilla and loved the food and ambience, cost approx £70 for 2 people B&B, but you can stay for much cheaper in boutique hotels in Havana Vieja or even cheaper in peoples homes (Casas Particulares). Most hotel food in general not good, except for breakfast.
Our favourite place in Cuba was in far East of Island, a town called Baracoa - Hotel El Castillo. Fantastic scenary, lovely small hotel, poolside has panoramic views, super beach nearby, helpful staff. Also liked Camaguey for architecture and character. Trinidad is lovely, but very touristy. Has great beaches nearby at Playa Ancon. Would recommend staying in a Casa Particular in town and getting taxi to/from beach. We stayed at hotel Las Cuevas which was horrible!
We are travelling to Vinales, Zapata Peninsula, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara very soon and will post a report on our return........

Thank you for the last replies.
Does anyone have a good suggestion and contacts for a “casa particular” in Trinidad? Or a good hotel close not very expenseive?
Do you think it´s a good option for two nights?

We rent a colonial house "Casa Particular" in Trinidad. The house has 2 A/C bedrooms with own hot water bathroom for 20 cuban convertible pesos (cuc).
Also we offer breakfast for 3 cuc and meals between 5 to 10 cuc.
If you arrive from Viazul bus we can wait for you at bus station.
You can contact us at alquilertrinidad@yahoo.es
Cheers!

Trinidad is certainly worth 2 nights. Check out Cuba-junky.com for more accommodation options. It's a very good site with reliable info

There is no shortage of casas for rent in Trinidad. In fact, it will resemble a mob scene when the tourist bus arrives as everyone wants to rent to you. The problem is finding a good one. It could take you several viewings to find the one you want. If you feel the need to book ahead of time then look at the link below or search this website as well for other recommendations. However, casa reservations in Cuba do not always "stick":

Have a look at my Trinidad pages (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/a74c8/1930b4/3/). I would thoroughly recommend this casa as the lady who owns it is really lovely, a great cook and the house is right in the centre of Trinidad. Trinidad is a wonderful place. If you go for only two days you will wish you could stay longer. Have fun!

Trinidad is a great little town.
I've stayed at Las Cuevas and La Ronda. Las Cuevas is up a killer hill and La Ronda is in town.
La Ronda is a low priced hotel.
Las Cuevas is a series of semi detached bungalows on a hillside overlooking town..
I have also stayed at Brisas at Playa Ancon about 8km from town.
Casa Particulares are another option and as stated there is not a shortage
I will be in Trinidad July 30,31 and am booked into Hostal Julio Mundoz. This Casa is highly recomended in the Moon Cuba guide book.
Check my blog for a link.
