Hotel La Residence in Gazcue, Santo Domingo: Budget Hotel In Santo Domingo
  • Satisfaction:
  • Hotel La Residence is a small guest house/ hotel located in Gazcue section of Santo Domingo. Gazcue is a quiet little neighborhood that is conveniently located within walking distance to the Colonial Zone, The Malecon and major hotels and Casinos. Hotel La Residence is also one of the few smaller hotels in Santo Domingo with their own website www.hotelresidencia.com Gazcue is also home to many restaurants featuring different cuisines. Off the top of my head restaurants within walking distance include Dominican, Spanish, Brazilian, Cuban, Belgian, Swiss, Seafood, Italian, Pizza, Steak house etc. If you want fast food, El Conde is a semi short walk away and home to Pizza Hut, KFC and more. KFC even delivers to Hotel Residence so on some days when I am too lazy to go out for lunch I call KFC and get my lunch delivered by moped! As for night life, the colonial zone has tons of cool places to check out and is very nearby. Hotel Napolitano which is a short walk away has a disco as well as a rooftop "terraza" with life music most nights. The terraza features mostly lounge type acts singing romantic songs but on wednesday nights they feature Mexican Mariachis. Hotel Jaragua is also within walking distance and features Jubilee disco as well as champions sports bar and the Merengue Bar with a live 10 piece Merengue band! As of september of 2005 room rates were very resonable. $900 pesos for a room with AC and $800 pesos with just a ceiling fan. Most rooms have small refridgerators and all have cable TV including american channels such as CNN, Fox News and ESPN. At the tme of my writing this the exchange rate is about 31 pesos to the dollar so rooms at Hotel La Residence are less than $30USD per night.

To me the unique quality of Hotel La Residence is the family run atmosphere. The hotel is owned and operated by family members. It is not unusual to see hotel guests greeted with a big smile and handshake or even a hug in many cases. I have spent many an afternoon or early evening sitting outside the Hotel chatting with the owners, and guests of teh hotel. This past trip there was an eclectic group staying at Hotel La Residence. "El Mago" or the Magician is originally from Cuba but lives in Miami now. He would be sitting outside each day talking up a storm and selling some used cell phones and cameras he brought in from Miami. He would also argue with "Nino". Nino is an older Italian gentleman that has been living at the hotel for several months while he looks to buy an apt in santo domingo. He can be somewhat "Cranky" as he often seems to be yelling, especially at hois novia and el Mago! One conversation Nino had by phone went EXACTLY like this. . . .Nino dials a number. . . .then pretty much yelling into the phone says . . . ."aah". . . ."aah".. . . ."ya". . . ."ok" and hangs up. . . . . sort of a cross between spanish and "Caveman". . . . Mingo is the security guard from the now closed Mona Lisa Massage Parlor. Mingo is a BIG guy that used to wrestle and works out a ton. he is a great guy to shoot the breeze with. Mona Lisa is now reopened but just as a Hotel. . . . .no more massages. . . . .or if you ask Mingo real nice he can probably hook you up. . . . LOL. . . .

Hotel La Residencia: budget hotel in Gazcue
Hotel La Residencia is located in one of the charming neighborhoods close to the Old Town, Gazcue. El Malecón, how Avenida George Washington is called, with the Caribbean sea close to it is only 3 minutes from the hotel. Calle El Conde and all that the Old Town has to offer is not far from this hotel - either a 15'ish minute walk or take a carro público on Avenida Independencia. The rates are 25-40 US per room per night, but if you stay longer periods then they can negotiate a lower price per night - which I strongly suggest and recommend you do.

La Residencia has 2 types of bedrooms: with or without air conditioning, the former being cheaper than the latter. For those of you who would like to self cater, there's a common kitchen on their 3rd floor, and some bedrooms have a small fridge. Do you want to eat out? Not a problem. Gazcue has a lot of restaurants, all within walking distance from the hotel. Should you need a taxi to pick you up at the airport, they can arrange that for you, as well as excursions and laundry service. There's also a colmado very close to the hotel, if you want soft drinks or snacks, and a 24-hour pharmacy a block away.

Hotel Palacio: Wonderful, inexpensive old hotel
  • Satisfaction:
  • I love staying here. The building is the 18th century home of a former President and certainly has the feel of a colonial home. The service is great, English is spoken, and breakfasts ($7.75) are buffet style with cooked-to-order eggs and great coffee and juice. My room was a standard which was quite comfortable for me, though the key is needed to keep the electricity on everywhere except the bathroom so when you leave the air conditioner is turned off. Fortunately, it cools the room very quickly when you return.

The hotel is the former home of an 18th century President. It has several courtyards and the rooms have tiled floors and extensive dark wood paneling reminiscent of a colonial home. Beautiful colonial artwork can be found in every room. It is only 1/2 block from the main pedestrian thoroughfare in the Colonial Zone, El Conde which has several tourist police stationed on every block, and is centrally located only 3-5 blocks from most of the major colonial sites.

Hotel Palacio: Wonderful, inexpensive colonial hotel
  • Satisfaction:
  • The service was wonderful. I paid 76.50 for a standard room with a king-sze bed, a TV, refrigerator, desk with free wired internet access (the electric outlets are exactly like in the US so no problems there), and a large bathroom with a shower. The only meal available is a buffet breakfast for $7.75 with cooked-to-order eggs, great coffee and juice, fruit, etc.

The hotel is the former home of an 18th century Dominican President. It is located in the center of the Colonial Zone, only a few blocks from most of the major colonial sites, and only 1/2 block from the main pedestrian thoroughfare, El Conde, where several tourist police are stationed on every block for safety. It definitely has the feel of a colonial home -- beautiful rooms with tile floors, extensive dark wood paneling, tons of artwork everywhere, and quiet, cool patios.

    Hotel Zapata: love the zapata
  • Satisfaction:
  • We will return this year for our 3rd visit to the Zapata. It is a wonderful secret we are willing to share. Family owned, on the beach, very clean, breakfast included are some of the good points. We love Marta and Gabrielle for making our stay so special. Right on Boca Chica beach and the staff will carry your lounger to the sand for you. There's a tiki hut bar and a quiet courtyard. Open air dining with a light breakfast. The rooms are not what you will find in a resort but have a closet with safe, a private bath, daily maid service and many have balconies. For $60 - $70 it is a great place to stay. We paid a nice man ( I think it was $10-$15) to take us to the reef to snorkle and he swam with us to point out the best fish. This will be our 5th trip to the DR and we are so glad we discovered the south coast and this great little hotel.

Friendly owners and staff and immaculate rooms. Location right on the beach at the quiet end of town. Try a little spanish and they will appreciate it. Relax and remember you are on Dominican time, it's part of the charm of the country.

    Hotel delta: Value! Value! Value!
  • Satisfaction:
  • Located in Bella Vista District about two blocks north of the Mirador del Sur Park, this medium-large, gay friendly hotel offers a location convenient to Zona Colonial without the cramped streets, traffic and crowds of the tourist zone. Although bordering on Sarasota Ave which can carry some traffic, the surrounding neighborhoods are quiet and safe and the hotel is close to all major shopping centers (3 in area) and supermarkets (Nacional and Plaza Lama). Why am I mentioning supermarkets? Part of Delta's room lineup (aimed at Europeans) feature tiny kitchenettes where you can fix meals with a small frig, stove (2 burners) sink and counter! When you arrive in your room tell housekeeping what type of utensils and dishes you will require. Not to say that Delta's restaurant isn't tops in quality and service -- it is! Great service, fresh soups and breads and specials of the day posted in elevator. Rooms are large, bathroom is small, very good beds, Cable TV, AC and a large dining table with window view. The hotel is staffed by super friendly people (they will call you by name after a short time) that make you feel at home, and is clean and well-run. Pool and rec room available and internet access is available in lobby for nominal charge or in your room. Taxis are available adjacent to hotel entrance in underground, guarded parking. Prices range $59.00 and up plus taxes. When making internet reservations make sure they are in spanish or confirm with desk before arriving (the internet office does not speak english, according to desk). After a five-day stay, I did not want to leave and made arrangements there for my next trip to DR.

Do not miss veranda and pool on 8th floor complete with food service and bar. This was closed for remodel during our stay and March and was a real treat for May's visit. 270 degree view of the entire city including Malecon and Caribbean Sea. Also added in April was complimentary breakfast buffet -- everthing fresh, clean and friendly -- an added bonus to an already incredible value

Maison Gautreaux: priceworthy and somewhat luxurious
Maison Gautreaux is recommended by tourists in some Dominican forums because of its location and for how much you get for what you pay for. The rooms are equipped with air conditioning, ceiling fans, fridge, hair dryer, room safe and cable TV. They have a 24-hour taxi service available from the lobby. The rates are 25-35 US per night, negotiable if you stay for a longer period - which I strongly recommend you do.

The Gazcue neighborhood is close to Zona Colonial and what it has to offer, as well as full of restaurants, pizza places with delivery in the zone and peace and quiet at night. I read on a forum that they have a jacuzzi on the terrace on the 3rd floor and wireless internet in the lobby.

My sister and I spent a week at this great hotel in December 2006. We got a very cheap rate booking through Expedia and, given that the hotel was never full, it is probably a waste of money to book through anything other than a clearinghouse. The room was very comfortable and clean, although housecleaning took its sweet time in cleaning (some days the maids were still in our room at 3PM!). The pool is very nice, with views of the sea and the bar area is a comfortable place to spend an evening if you don't want to go into town. The only problem is the surrounding area, as the casinos attract hustlers, drug dealers and prostitutes at night. Also, eating at the hotel is way too expensive - $25 for brunch compared to $5 a person for a hearty meal at the sandwich shop around the corner.

The pool area is great fun and you can enjoy the sun with a piña colada in a hollowed out pinapple ($7). The exercise room is also a great way to relax, as jogging in the very polluted and humid air is likely to cause more damage than good.

  • The Melia Santo Domingo Hotel & Casino is located at the malecon (the waterfront boulevard) in Santo Domingo and is absolute recommendable. After been travelling around the Dominican Republic for nearly three weeks, we wanted a little luxury the last days before going back to Europe – and we were happy with The Melia Santo Domingo Hotel & Casino. The room was large and clean, and the hotel had a fine pool area (with pool bar), fantastic breakfast buffet (included in the price for the room), fitness center, business center with internet access and a friendly and professional staff. Next to the hotel a casino is located, but we didn’t go. Think the other guests were mostly businesspeople. Lots of suit and ties – not many in shorts and t-shirts…
