Not sure it's SDQ or PUJ. In the case of SDQ, the taxi is the only choice and costs appr. US$40-50 to town,or a taxi to boca chica then taking a bus. In the case of PUJ, you may wait Express Bavaro outside the airport but I suggest you take a taxi to either Bavaro or Veron then the express bus. The taxi will cost you US$20-30.

Travel Tips for Santo Domingo

Spend time in Zona Colonial,...

by sketchyhand

Spend time in Zona Colonial, the architecture is beautiful. I also recommend renting a car and taking a road trip for a couple of days. DR is an amazing country with many beautiful sights. Get out and off the beaten path! The students at UNPHU university once again proved to me that the best way to learn about a country is to befriend locals and let them do the rest. You will be amazed at the friends you will make and the great things you can learn fron each other. I am already a much better cook, thanks girls!

When you visit Santo Domingo,...

by Patricialuv

When you visit Santo Domingo, beaches is not the only thing you will encounter!
There are tons of great restaurants, casinos, etc to visit. Here is a list:

National Acquarium (Beautiful place to visit, especially for the fish and overall nature lovers! )

Faro a Colon: Where the remains of Christopher Columbus lay, as well as many famous paintings, sculptures, etc. It's like a beautiful musuem. I even had the chance of going all the way to the top of it. A picture of it is on the bottom of the page. I could see the entire city from that high!

Alcazar de Colon: where the Columbus family resided. You will visit the entire Colonial era by watching these ancient buildings.

Santo Domingo Architecture

by mikey_e

As the first city in Spanish America, Santo Domingo obviously has some of the best examples of early Spanish colonial architecture, including Baroque churches and government buildings. The Colonial presence means that some of the more important structures have a military feel to them, while some churches harken to older times with their Romanesque or Gothic façades. As other places in Mexico and South America gained in importance, and the importance of the Spanish kingdom waned, Santo Domingo's inhabitants slowed their construction of new buildings and as such the city has relatively fewer examples of later trends in architecture (like Modernist and Neo-Classical styles) in the historic areas of the capital. Still, you can find some examples of these movements, particularly among private residences (the rich are always sensitive to happenings in major world cities). You can also find some novel native innovations, particularly in the poorer areas, where people have sought to make their homes more permanent and withstand the elements (as Santo Domingo is prone to earthquakes and hurricanes).

Fans of so-called Colonial Rot will also be pleased by a trip to Santo Domingo. The excessive humidity and inability of government services to restore all buildings in the Zona Colonial mean that there are abundant examples of this New World phenomenon.

Baseball

by ValbyDK

If you're in Santo Domingo you must go and see a baseball game.

The local teams are Licey and Escogido and they both play at Estadio Quisqueya. Dominican baseball is of a high standard, and many players also play in the Major League in USA.

There's a fantastic atmosphere in the stadium during the match: Drums, singing, dancing...

Games can be sold out (especially Licey against Aquilas (from Santiago)), so remember to check for available tickets before you go.

International Book Fair

by marielexoteria

The book fair is a yearly event a week long every April. All the major (and smaller) book shops have a stand there selling books at a discount prices. Every fair has a special guest country and they make seminars, expositions, etc about it.

There are other events like theater, shows, concerts and workshops.

Address: Plaza del Conservatorio Nacional, Avenida Cesar Nicolás Penson esquina Alma Mater
Access: Walking distance from the intersection of Av. 27 de Febrero and Tiradentes, close to UASD University.
