Santiago's best cheap hotel

I have used the Hotel Colonial for many years, regularly taking groups of students and teachers to stay there while we work in the barrios. The rooms are clean and basic. There's always hot water and clean sheets. Victor the owner and his son Lazaro are the greatest, always willing to help out any way they can as is the rest of the staff. There's cable TV in the rooms, super cheap internet and international calling in the lobby and free wi-fi spots. The food is basic Dominican, which means it's GOOD! You can ask for pretty much whatever you want, if they can get it, they'll make it. Try the mangu. It's centrally located, close to El Monumento, El Mercado Modelo (for souvenirs) as well as the Centro Leon, the Carnaval Mask Museum and the other museums in town as well as the central market. Why pay more?
