Hotel Castilla: Nastiest hotel on Earth

by ArenJo

I read both good and bad reviews about this place online. So, I thought I would try it out. I got charged more than I expected $20, and they even tried to charge me about $40 to have a breakfast included plan. Well, I paid the $20 and went up to my room. There were holes in the wall and it looked like the place could crumble at any moment. First thing first, I showered. The water barely trickled out. Then I pulled back the sheets to get into bed and there were bugs galore! I went downstairs to complain and the owner laughed at me and handed me a can of bug spray (though I'm obviously pregnant). At that point I was just disgusted and I left to stay in the Cabanas near Confresi (any of those are way better on a budget).
I honestly have never been so disgusted in my life. Unless you want bugs in all of your stuff, go stay at a much better and clean bug-free place for only $10 more a night.

Cabanas Isla del Paraiso: Nice, new cabanas near Puerto Plata

by ArenJo

The Isla del Paraiso Cabanas can be found in many area in the Dominican Republic. The only one I have stayed at is near Puerto Plata. They were brand new, extremely clean, and had helpful staff.
I would recommend though to bring cash. I tried to pay with credit cards and they were having constant problems with their machines and claiming that my cards were bad. So, I stayed there one night for $30. The next night when I tried to stay there, I got charged $20 for just a few hours because they let us go in and THEN tried both of my cards (that worked everywhere else). They said the cards weren't working and so I had to leave since I didn't have the $30 for the night. So, possibly their machines werent working, possibly they wanted to overcharge us and not even let us stay knowing we didn't have the cash to stay a whole night. So...long story short...good place to stay if you have cash, terrible place to stay if you don't.

Everything is brand new and in good condition. The rooms with the "love chairs" and sofas cost more than the ones I stayed in.

Hotel Guaynabo in Las Terrenas: Nice accomodations

by ArenJo

My boyfriend is friends with the owner, so he made a deal for $30 a night. It may cost someone else around $40 a night.
The hotel is in a good area. Very close to stores as well as the beach. Fairly quite at night.
The rooms were clean and both rooms we looked at had TVs as well as a queen bed and a child's bed. So, it's very good for a couple and a third party (child or not).
I would definitely stay there again if in the area.

Cabanas Sensacion in Confresi: A little too expensive

by ArenJo

This hotel was nice and had a jacuzzi and even a nice "love chair." However, I thought the price of around $50 for one night was a little much. The other Cabanas in the area are much cheaper.
Clean rooms and professional staff.

Hotel Bristol in Dajabon: Decent enough

by ArenJo

I was very surprised at how well the staff (or possibly the owners) spoke English.
My double room (two beds) with air conditioning was 1000 pesos. That's fair, considering it is only about $30. If you don't use credit card, they won't charge tax either. At least that's what they told me to talk me out of using my credit card, unfortunately by this time I was out of cash.
The beds were clean and the fans were powerful. However, I never could get the air conditioner that I paid for to work. In addition, the staff were very stingy about giving us another towel and soap when I asked for one since apparently they thought 3 people should use one bar of soap and 2 towels.
Overall, I would recommend this hotel. The area was ok. There were hotels closer to the border with Haiti, but on the night I went there were no rooms available in those (possibly because I got there late on Sunday and Monday is market day in Dajabon).

The staff spoke English very well.

Hotel Don Emilio: Good, cheap hotel on beach in Boca Chica

by ArenJo

This hotel had a great (though expensive) restaurant downstairs. The breakfast is continental. In May we paid $80 for one night which is very low compared to other hotels in the area.
Be wary. First I was told the hotel was $80 per night and then I was showed a room. I said I liked the room and I would take it at which time I was taken back down to the front desk and I was told it would be $100. I disagreed with that price and was then given a cheaper, smaller room without an ocean view for the original $80. In addition to this, my boyfriend asked to see a room and I guess since I'm American and he's Dominican, they thought we weren't together and they for some reason told him the bigger room was $120.
Anyway...our room was clean when we first got in it, but for some reason by the time we came back from the beach EVERYTHING was covered in ants. So, I suppose if they quote you too high of a price and that happens, I would leave. However, being that the ants aren't going to kill us and all the other hotels cost so much, I just shook them off of the bed before we got in.
Overall, the hotel is pretty and there are many places to sit or lay on chairs on the beach. The staff is nice and the price was more than fair.

Beautiful beach just off the back steps.

Villas Jazmin in Costambar: Relaxing Villas!!!

by GrabYourPassport

My stay at the Villas Jazmin was so relaxing... We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa with a full kitchen and living room space. There was also a pool right outside our villa that was always great for cooling off from the hot sun. The restraunt at the hotel was always serving delicious food.

The service you will find at the Villas Jazmin and everywhere in the Dominican Republic is out standing. People are always around if you need something. The housekeeping did an excellent job every day and I found it amusing how everyday they would fold our towels in swan shapes.

The location was also nice. Costambar is a gated community and you are in the heart of life in the Dominican Republic. Its not like staying at a hotel where the surrounding area has conformed to tourism and "americanized". There is true culture surrounding you. This community also has everything you need. A grocery store just a few blocks from the villas and and ice cream shop right next door and best of all the beach is only two blocks away so it's an easy walk. Plenty of flea markets by the beach and up by the grocery store to shop at.

I recommed staying at the Villas Jazmin to anyone who is looking to relax.

Coral Hamaca (Hilton) Boca Chica: All Inclusive Fun for a Budget Traveler

by clhomme

The Hilton Coral Hamaca in Boca Chica is an all inclusive resort. We paid $300 each ($420 with taxes) for airfare from Boston, 5 nights with all food and alcohol included. It was on a lovely beach, there were 5 or 6 restaurants with frankly wonderful food as far as the eye could see, and more booze than anyone could possible handle. It took around 5 minutes to get used to walking up for free pina coladas, but once used to it it was easy - and the bars on the beach are open all night long. For better or Worse.

I went in May, which was obviously a low season. The water was warm, the hotel not very full, the food exceptional.

The hotel had its issues - some ceilings falling in, some noise, but overall it was great - huge huge rooms, with great shower, good a/c lovely views. I asked for a room in the main building on the 2nd floor overlooking the beach. I couldn't have been happier.

Boca Chica is a great base to see the rest of the DR via rental car.

Majestic Colonial Punta Cana: Great place to relax

by chicabonita

I thought that this resort is already to big, but from other guest who have been in other resorts in Punta Cana I learnt that this one was small!

The resort had 7 different restaurants. For two of them (Le gourmet and the Teppanyaki) reservation was needed.

The beach was wonderful and you could walk for hours! Fanstatic.

One of the things I enjoyed most was the daily winetasting. Every day at lunch time Cristian the sommeliere presented different white and red wines as well as a different cheese. Fantastic! It was the first time I tasted a wine from Uruguay! The explanations about the wines given by Cristian were execellent!!!

All in all I had a wonderful time here ...
