in Dominican Rep. is very recommendable to join an all inclusive resort. A fantastic complex is the Barcelo Bavaro (see www.barcelo.com) with 5 hotels Beach, Garden, Casino, Golf and Palace where you can choose between 8-15 restaurants, dozens of bars, all kind of entertainment during day and night..
and also there can be several thousand people on the resort together, you never will be treated as a number
The four-star all inclusive Barceló Bávaro Beach**** hotel boasts an exclusive locale on Bavaro Beach, 3 kilometers of fine, white sands in the Punta Cana region on the east coast of the Dominican Republic . Only 20 kilometers from Punta Cana International Airport, this hotel is part of an exclusive 6-hotel resort complex, the only one of its kind in the area.
In addition to the extensive facilities found in this hotel, guests are welcome to enjoy services and amenities in the Barceló Bávaro Caribe, Family Deluxe and Casino hotels using our free transportation, the Bavaro Express. fantastic cocktails..very good food. marvellous palmbeach
only negativ: far outside from the local population
We stayed at the Barcelo...

We stayed at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort. It was lovely, but I don't know that it stands out too far above others in the area. It was everything I expected for a 4 star property, and it met it's value for what we paid. We only drove by other properties so I can't offer a comparison to other resorts in Punta Cana.
What I can say: it offers alot of variety for an all-inclusive resort. There are 5 different hotels in the resort; The Palace, The Beach, The Garden, The Casino and The Golf. The first three are right on the beach, the Casino and Golf are set back a bit and you take a shuttle to the beach. We walked from one to the other.. and ran it more than once when we forgot something (like the fact that gentlemen must wear long pants at the Casino)! They are a comfortable distance, you're not tired if you walk the 10 minutes casually, and personally I enjoyed the exercise, but there are little shuttle trains that run frequently around the entire resort. The hotels have different restaurants that you can utilize, each hotel has its own pool and several bars, and there are two nightclubs in the resort as well.
The Barcelo Bavaro Beach...

The Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort has two nightclubs, a discoteca that plays popular music (mostly American) and a Spanish club that plays Latin music for Merengue, Salsa etc.
Both were definitely hot spots for the entire week I was there (yes I visited it NEARLY every night, and the night I missed (Friday) was the night they had a live band and was REALLY happening, and of course I missed it due to being there for the 5 nights previous (okay due to hangover and exhaustion.. Thursday night was a rough one!)
The Spanish club at the Plaza Dominicana is called 'Las Canas' [less CON yahs] and many of the resort workers go there. They are very entertaining and more than happy to teach you how to dance their local merengue.. Gentlemen must wear long pants to the discoteca. Most men were wearing pants at Las Canas as well, but it didn't appear to be a requirement as it's somewhat open-air and there isn't a doorman.
Much more than expected

I went to Barcelo Bavaro Beach 1/2/03 - 1/8/03 just because the package that I got looked so good that I could not let it go. I was a little concern though because reviews were mixed and ranging from very good to very bad.
I must say that I had an awesome time. I enjoyed a lot the animation events in the beach and the pool. The food was incredible, but you have to do your homework understanding what is being served when and where. With over 14 places to eat it could be confusing. Tuesday's lobster at "La Uva" is a definetively must. Beverages are served w/o alcohol unless specified, so keep the phrase "with rum please" if you are in the mood for it.
Employees are friendly, prompt and corteus. If you are catholic there is a church in the complex.
If you are not in the mood for walking, you can take the train, but no place is too far if you learn how to work the trails.
The land is well kept and the gardens are beautiful - if you have been in the caribbean often, you will see that they have made very effort to make the place "natural" wich gives you the real experience - you will not find romanesque statues here - after all you are in the caribbean!
Shows are excellent, but some are better than others, as with the restaurants, you have to do your homework to find what you like and what is being presented where and when.
To sumarize, I will definetively go back to Barcelo Bavaro Beach!!
beautiful beaches

We stayed at Bavaro Beach resort Jan6-13, 2003. The rooms were a little outdated. The staff was very friendly and the service was good. The beaches were the best we have ever seen. The sand was soft and white and the ocean was warm and calm, great for swimming. Overall this resort was a great family friendly place to stay. We would love to go back!
Great Vacation

My wife & I just spent a wonderful vacation
in Ixtapa at the Barcelo Beach Resort. The resort was very
comfortable, and the staff was very professional. Not alot of night life at the resort, but the resort put on great presentations of mexican life every night. We will be back again and again.
disappointed at the beach

We went to the Barcelo beach over Christmas last year. We called in advance to get the rooms nearest the hotel as we had been warned there were long walks between buildings. We were placed way at the other end as far as you could go. The Palace was closer than the lobby of our hotel. The room was damp and had a mildew smell and we quickly made friends with the cockroach that inhabited the bathroom. On arrival we were given the key and opened it to find it in disgusting state, not cleaned from the previous residents, beer cans and ciggarette butts in the sink and on the floor. We complained and were offered the room next door which was in the same shape. water leaked from the room upstairs into our bath and the hot water..wasn't. The airconditioning worked over time and we froze, if we turned it off there were puddles on the floor in the morning. The cleaning staff were OK but they never cleaned until 5 o"clock in the evening so you could return to your room each day and find nothing had been done.
The food definately left something to be desired. we tried all the restaurants we could and ended up eating at the steakhouse. We got really sick from eating the meat and at the Mexican restaurant. Some of our party were seasoned travellers living in Mexico where they never were sick.. here it took 2 days.
We speak some Spanish, however because we were Canadian from the west coast we felt that we were not treated as a well as the natural Spanish speaking customers. The desk were the only people that could really talk to us willingly and make us feel welcome.
We had a problem trying to get out of the resort. It took us 3 days to rent a car..it was supposed to be there in the morning but "the car" kept being postponed..do they have only one? Taxi's were only ordered from the desk or you had to walk to the gate. Then there may not be one. We felt like The Prisoner (if any of you remember that old programme).
The beaches were great and the scuba diving also which made the trip good for some of the party. The rest of us found everything too americanized, the prices in the gift shops were outrageous and all in American dollars, there was no difference between the merchandise in any of the little stores, mass produced tourist traps.
We managed to get out of the resort and went up country and around the outskirts where we found the real Punta Cana. The people were friendly and chatted to us in both English and Spanish. The prices were reasonable and bartering much more fair.
we would never go back to this resort, we felt we were cheated and out complaints not heeded one bit. my advice is GO SOMEWHER ELSE.....
Paradise

Travelled to Bavaro in August 2002 and there is only one word for it Paradise.
Right from the moment we stepped of the plane and the hot air touched our face i just knew we were going to have a super time.
On arrival at the resort we were quicly checked in and shown to our room.
We went for a stroll around the ground and take it from me they are beautiful, everthing is so clean and tidy.
I have heard alot of mixed reports about this resort and was abit weary about my trip.
Let me tell you the everything from the food to the people are fantastic.
I traveeled to the Dominican Republic the year prior and stayed in the south of the island and enjoyed it but nothing compares to bavaro.
There were lots for us to do but only if you wanted, i you felt like hiding away from everyone all you had to do was walk alittle to find a bit of beach to yourself. And when you lay there with not a sole around you feel as though your on your own deserted island.
I would say the beach is the best i have ever seen and im so picky when it comes to a good beach.
I have travelled all over Jamaica, Mexico and Cuba and the Dominican Republic was the best of all.
I think it had a lot to do with the hotel i will look for other Barcelo Resorts to travel to onn holiday because if they are all as good as this one, you will have a brill time.
One piece of advice, if you are having doubts, then don't, you will have the time of your life.
I hope everyone that goes enjoys as much as i did.

Barcelo Bavaro Beach & Caribe
by ChristinaBauer
Hi!
I am going to the Barcelo Bavaro Beach & Caribe resort on September 3r, and was just wondering if anyone has been there? I hear that the beach is beautiful! I was just wondering if there are any useful tips? Also, if anyone knows how the weather is in the begining of September?
Thanks,
Christina :)

Hi Christina, you are in for a treat!! We were at the Barcelo in April and loved it! The resort itself is huge, but broken down into 5 sections (Beach, Caribe, Golf, Casino and Palace, which is an upcharge). There's a little train which runs throughout the resort, if you don't feel like walking. And yes, the beach is beautiful! Soft, powdery sand, and palm trees which go almost down to the water - it's gorgeous! As with anywhere in DR, make sure you bring your Immodium. Feel free to e-mail any questions!!
Enjoy!
