does any one know if food &alcohol are exspensive in cabarete?

The prices in Cabarete are more expensive there then in Puerto Plata , but this is a expensive area , the property is much more dearer the Sosua & Puerto Plata , but if you look around you can still find Restaurants & Shops at better then avarage prices .

Credit Cards and Sales Tax

Here's why every business in the DR doesn't want you to pay with a credit card. It's not really the fees they pay to Visa, MasterCard, etc. It's that they're cheating the government out of the sales tax by grossly under representing the true volume of their transactions. When you pay by credit, it makes it easier for the government auditors to catch them. We were there when the DR version of the IRS (I'm American) did some sting operations on the beach front restaurants.
While it's nice not to pay the tax and have money for another pina colada, I would rather pay it and have a sounder infrastructure on the island.

We went to the fort in Sosua. We went in a cab and there is was.....the firestation of Sosua. My husband and i are both firefithers, so we almost went crazy and hit the cabdriver and told him to stop at this place. The people were so nice. We get the jackets and helmets from the MAN and we were allowed to take pictures. We even signed a geustbook and had to promise to send the pictures we made to the Dominican! The picture is of a little chapel for the fireman to pray when they come back safe.
