The hotel beautiful. Tile floors, light and airy, clear pathways, plants, flowers, trees. Beautiful. Along with the live plants, trees and flowers, you get a little local wildlife - frogs, birds, dragon flies!
All of the food was amazing! There was something for everybody. Each night was a different theme. So, for example, we had a Mexican night; the dining area was decorated, there was music playing and the majority of the food was Mexican.
No matter what the theme was, there was always a choice of meat, vegetables, chips, pizza and pasta.
There are also two resturants that you need a prior booking for if you want something a little more formal.
There is so much entertainment throughout the day and night for all ages. You could join in a darts competition, pool games, volleyball on the beach, games in the swimming pool, quizes, discos and much more. The entertainment staff put on a tribute show every night - some were good, some were not so good!! But still entertaining!!!
The hotel also has a kids club and offers a range of water sports either free or at a small cost.
Our room was spacious, clean and had a balcony. The bathrrom was clean and of adequate size for two.
All of the staff are welcoming and very friendly. The entertainment staff are good fun and it's great talking to them.
There is also a spa, I had a full body massage (1hr) for $50 - absolute bliss!
We booked with Thompson's. We had a meeting with the Rep a day after we arrived. She was such a lovely woman. She explained all about where we were staying and the trips that were open to us. She spoke from experience and told us her true opinion.

    Unique Quality: Excellent all inclusive
Firstly, it's 24 hours all inclusive, so if you really didn't want to spend anything, you don't have to! The fridge in your room is filled up everyday with water, coke and sprite. The bar has small snacks throughout the day. There is an area with hot snacks available when the resturant isn't open. All of these food areas are all you can eat. The bar never closes either!!

    On the beach
All I have to say really is that you walk to the swimming pool area, then on to the beach - it's that simple and that close!!

More about Viva Wyndham Tangerine

Absolutely Wonderful

by TripAdvisor Member jencot

I stayed at the Viva Tangerine from December 6th-13th. I was so pleased with the staff, rooms, hotel, grounds, food, and the beach! My room was always immaculate as were the grounds. The staff was always cleaning. I never had to wait on drinks in the bar, the food was somewhat different each day on the buffet, but the best for lunch was the pizza. The buffet was not that bad. The Italian restaurant was wonderful as was the Mexican.

The only annoying aspect was the vendors on the beach. I wish there was a way to avoid them, but it is a public beach. Overall, it was one of the best AI resorts I have stayed at. I so look forward to another vist to the Viva Tangerine

Best Holiday Ever!!!

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed at Viva Tangerine for 2 weeks from September 21st 2004. It was the best holiday we have ever had. Food was great and you never got bored because there was so much variety! Loads to do all day and night if you wanted because there were so many planned activities. We'd definately recommend this hotel to anyone!!!

Right Place, Wrong Picture

by TripAdvisor Member Wicky201

Just returned from the Viva Tangerine Resort. Very Nice, good people.
The picture Wyndham is providing on their website as well as Expedia and others is NOT, I repeat, NOT the resort in Cabarete.
If you want to see photos of the place, check Debbies Dominican Reviews for a link. But don't's a nice place. The "smell" that other reviewers talk about is from the on-site water plant, which never affected me or anyone I spoke with. In fact, no one knew what I was talking about!

Good Holiday

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed at Viva Tangerine from 5th October 2004 for 2 weeks.

The hotel is very nice and very clean. The rooms were well air conditioned, and cleaned every day. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much of a hassle for them!

The grounds were well maintained and pool very clean, and the beach is raked and cleaned every day.

Could do with some more shaded areas for sunbathing around pool and beach.

Food was very good for all inclusives!

Lots of activities, if you are into that sort of thing, but staff are sometimes too enthusiastic!

Great Great Holiday

by A TripAdvisor Member

First of all I must say I am a Travel Agent, this was a personal vacation but I did however keep business in mind.

Our stay was from November 30 until December 14. What a great 2 weeks!

Every holiday has its quirks and perks keep in mind you are in a 3rd world country. These people depend on tourists and are very friendly and helpful!

This hotel is underrated! should be 4 and a half star. Very clean and well maintained. Beautiful buildings, beautiful gardens , breathtaking beach!

In the DR the power does go off sometimes usually once a day and the water sometimes stops runnning but only momentarily and its not all a part of the country!!

Hotel staff is nice, front desk needs some people skills as well as the bartenders.. Most of the bartenders are alot of fun though. The girls in guest services and excursions really made our trip! Staff from all over the world! They really care and will do anything to help out!

The food was really great! The buffet was incredible, one of the best buffets I have ever eaten at! The Mexican restaurant was really good, the Italian was nice, I have lived in Italy and it was comparable.

Waitstaff.. 5 star quality! you can never be grumpy with all the smiling faces! No-one expects a tip, but they really appriciate it! And deserve it!

Hotel excursions were alot of fun we did the Puerto Plata city tour snorkling in Sosua Bay and Punta Russia!! These are well worth the money! Also get out and explore Cabarete its alot of fun..just stand your ground! walk the beaches you encounter some real untouched beauty!

There is Surf here too!! A few really great Reef breaks the odd Point break and in Las Terranas a beach break! If your planning on staying at this hotel get a moto taxi to Encuentro and ask for Renee, he'll set you up with a board for about 15 dollars a day. There are lefts and rights, and its only good in the morning. Also Playa Grande in Rio San Juan is Reef and Beach break and the beaches is beautiful! But the Viva Tangerine is the best location access to many fun things to do!

I really loved this resort and the Country it was my first time here, even though I have been sending clients there for years. Its a big world so Im not sure when i'll be going back but I WILL!

returning in may

by A TripAdvisor Member

I traveled to DR in Aug of 2004. This was my first trip out of the country and was well worth it. I chose viva Tangerine based on tons of research over the internet. some people did not enjoy their trip and some had pleasant things to write about but my curiosty did not mind. the ride to the hotel was a little nerving but then again i live in a small town where traffic isnt horrible. at first looking at the sites on the way to hotel i was worried. this country has such poverty. the resort was beautiful and we had to wait for our room to be cleaned but hey this gave time to explore and to take pictures. the rooms were clean not much clutter which is a plus. The food was okay but i like to try different things. i never got sick and i do have a very sensitive stomach. the night entertainment was fun. the drinks were excellent and strong. the pool area was crouded but i enjoyed the beach. when on the beach salesmen approach to sell jewelry keep in mind in cabrete you can buy the same stuff tons cheaper. the spa at the resort sucked. i hate to be critical but my mom is a beautician and thier manicures and frenchtip nails were horrible and fell off the next day and i wasnt thrilled to see their shampoo was suave which in america is the cheapest you can buy and terrible for your hair. however that did not discourage me. i went on tours during the day which i had a blast. try the monster truck tour. it is worth every penny and an experience of a life time. also if you decide to that tour bring plenty of candy for the children. the staff was excellent at night a guard would watch over me as i walked the beach and escorted me to my room. i felt safe at all times. the weather was perfect, i am from kentucky and i hate 95 deg and high humity. but there is was enjoyable. another tip when shopping bargain and pay in peso. to buy in regular currancy will cost you double. i reccomend this place for all types of people . i met wonderful people from all over. oh and one more thing i talked to others from other resorts and they had magor problems with water, electric and poor service. i had no such problem. cant wait to back in may. oh one more thing ever seen dirty dancing this place is just like it. well actually a little wilder but a great place to relax and enjoy the freedom.

Great place

by A TripAdvisor Member

Trip date 1st September-14th 2004 A good place, Very clean and well maintained. Food was good. It can get a litttle boring after about 10 days but the town is ok and the Irish bar is good and very reasonable!! The nightclub is a little desperate!! But ok i suppose if you like cheese and salsa!?!?. Beer is ok and plenty of good cocktails!! Plenty of good trips if you so wish!!

Pleasantly Surprised

by A TripAdvisor Member

Great beach, immaculately clean hotel, sevice with a smile and superb weather. So what more could you want? Well, the food went from lovely to awful depending what day it was, the cocktails were ok depending on who served you and the entertainment went from dire to superb depending on who was available! So you never quite knew what you were going to get, but hey, maybe that was part of its charm! We loved the people, the clean beach, the constant cool breeze and even the beach sellers were fun. Plus, I got to swim with Dolphins at Ocean World so that's one of my dreams come true.
A word of warning about the Irish bar known as Jose O'shea's, it adds a tax that does not officially exist! If you accept Dom Rep, warts and all, you will enjoy it, if you want to be picky don't bother.

Nice A.I. Hotel

by A TripAdvisor Member

We just stayed 2 weeks and were pleasantly surprised. Nice location and beach (big waves from the Atlantic ocean), usually windy in the afternoon (great spot for kite-surfers). Very friendly staff (except one women at reception). Nice, big room. Sometimes, they give you a junior suite for the same price. Food was quite good for an a.i. , usually a lot of variety, also enough vegetables (european taste). Animation staff are really friendly and offer a lot of things to do. Do not forget to attend their Holywood show, really fantastic. You have to know that guests are mostly Europeans: 2/3 Germans, 1/3: mixture of British, Italian, Canadian, French. Do not forget to tip from time to time (about 100 pesos), your camerista (the girl cleaning your room), the waiter serving your morning coffee or the barmen. Only problem was a smell of smoke sometimes at night (locals burning some sort of garbage in the vicinity), when weather was dry, but normally was filtered by the air cond. system and did not disturb our rest except one night.

very pleased

by A TripAdvisor Member

I was there from Nov. 24 to Dec 1. I was a little nervous going because of all the negaitive reviews from people who visited in the summer.

But all my fears were quickly removed once I got settled.

the food was great. But i have a strong stomach so i ate just about everything. My wife is not so lucky, but there was plenty of fruits & vegatables for her, and she quite enjoyed how they were prepared.

The Mexican and Italian restaurants were excellent as well, but we enjoyed the buffet more because it had a new theme every night.

Also the pizza was very good.

If you ordered Rum, they make sure you get a few ounzes. But if you order Whiskey, Vodka, etc... they are abit tighter and less is poured.
The local beer is good as well.

The people who work there are very friendly. They speak several languages and were always happy to help you. Just one thing to remember! You are in the Dominican republic. The people are very laid back. If you ask for something, it will get done... in Dominican Time. But that never became a problem.

there was lost to do, from Darts, Bocce ball, volleyball, dance lessons, karaoke... so there is no way a person should be bored at this resort.

the beach is not calm. But i loved it. If you like water sports, this beach is amazing. Great waves that break at any moment!!! if you don't like that, stay at the pool.

The pool is also good. Tons of shade (palm trees, huts) around the pool.
There is alot of beach chairs as well. But i have never been in a pool that is so cold. Its nice once you got used to it, but i swear they put ice in it.

our was the standard room, and it was very nice. lost of room, the A/C worked well, the bathroom was a good size with a shower that had an adjustable head. which is great for guys over 6 feet tall. if you tip the maids well, they will even fold your clothes that are laid out on your bed.

the shows are a bit on the cheese side. But after a day of drinking rum, hand puppets would of made me laugh. But they did put on 2 great shows. They danced for 90 minutes. These anminations work 14 hour days... its crazy.

The hotel had many excurtions. I recommend the city tour of Puerto Plata. You visit a rum factory and buy some great rum and stupid low prices.... like $6 U.S. for a 26 oz bottle. also there is good shopping there. The vendors in the city are not that aggressive. so there is no pressure to buy anything.

I had a great time. Just some advice...

1. If a guy tries to sell you Cuban cigars. Refuse. You can't buy Cuban Cigars in the DR.

2. realx. the mood there is not fast at all.

3. there is an ESSO gas station across the street. In the DR, gas stations turn into Clubs at night. Mostly after midnight. They play the music loud, so its not the hotel fault.

4. there are no driving rules. if thery are, they are not followed.

5. Buy The Brugal rum....mmmmmmm!!!!

Looking for Wheelchair-Accesisble Resort

by Canuck_Wheels

A small group of us are thinking of going to Cuba or the Dominican Republic in mid-February for a week. We are looking 3 or 4 star, reasonably-priced, all-inclusive and wheelchair-accessible resort. I have a manual wheelchair.

By wheelchair-accessible, I mean one with a room that has a bathroom door is at least 24 inches wide, grab bars beside the toilet and shower and no stairs to most of the amenities. The room must be able to accommodate 3-4 people.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

the Viva Wyndham Tangerine has wheelchair accessibility as I'm sure do most of the Viva Wyndhams.

worried about the weather

by scorpio33

hi there my husband and i are going to puerto plata on the 3rd of november ...every weather site i check is calling for rain, and more rain...
also we are going to stay at viva whydham tangerine ...what is it really like???
thanks have a great day

RE: worried about the weather

by tropicalsunset

You are staying at the Viva Wyndham Tangerine in Cabarete? I work in Cabarete. Come to see me one time at Alf Internet & Tours.

But the weather in december should be good. In november is usually rains a bit more but that should be better in december. But ofcourse, you can never guarantee the weather.
In the Dominican it rains often, that is why the island is so beautiful. But when it rains, it mostly rains during the night. And after a tropical shower during the day, the sun will appear again.

So don't worry to much about the weather. You will have plenty of sun and beautiful weather!
