Driving from Puerto Plata, DR to Port Au Prince, Haiti

I am looking for someone with recent experience of driving from Puerto Plata, DR to Port Au Prince, Haiti. How long, how rough a road, how much cost, did they rent or hire a driver, etc.

Any information would be vital and very much appreciated/

I'm sure that people do it but car rentals will not let you drive their cars to Haiti, where the insurance gets void.

There's a bus service going from Santiago to Cap Haitien, if you want I could find out their timetables. Otherwise there's a daily first class bus service from Santo Domingo, from the company Caribe Tours (www.caribetours.com.do) and it takes about 9 hours to reach Pétionville.

In any case I think that the most convenient way to drive would be to drive from PP to SD and then westbound to P-a-P. The roads PP-SD and SD-Pedernales or SD-Jimaní are in great condition, but I can't comment on the roads at the other side of the border - even more now after the earthquake.

Frío frío vendor

A frío frío is pretty much like slush ice. The vendor has a big block of ice and something to shred enough ice to fill your cup (can be 2 sizes), and then you choose the flavor you want from the bottles and he pours it in your glass. Its name means "cold cold" and it's usually a cheap way to refresh yourself when it's hot. I used to have a lot of those when I was growing up so this picture brought back some good memories.

Frío fríos can be found everywhere in the country but I made the tip here because that's where I took the picture at.
