Best Resort in Puerto Plata
by jpleskot about Riu Merengue
I have been to this same resort 3 times and it is unbeliveable! The scenery and food is just beyond your imagination. Riu Merengue is linked with two other resorts... Riu Bachta and Riu Mambo. Even though you are staying at one of the resorts you can eat and enjoy all the facilities at the other two resorts as well with no extra cost. Riu Merengue is located in the Middle of the three resorts. The hotel rooms are spread out throughout the resort area covered in palm trees and other kinda of exotic plants. The rooms are separated into bungalo type buildings. 8 rooms per bungalo, 4 ontop, 4 on the bottom. This is an all inclusive resort so the food keeps you stuffed and drinks just keep flowing.

Best holiday ever - Riu Mambo
by A TripAdvisor Member
I just happened upon this web site and have to add my comments. I have seen many, many vacation resorts but nothing even compares with the "Dominican Experience". We were at the Riu Mambo in March /03 and are heading back any day now. The people are just unbelievably beautiful in every way. The hotel grounds are impeccable, the rooms are very nice, the food, well, I'm a picky eater, but there was always something for me to chow down on. No matter if you're heading down there for a little R&R, a honeymoon, to party, to meet people or not, whatever your purpose, you can't go wrong at the Mambo. I've been trying to find the best deal out there (for 2 weeks)..anybody have any suggestions or websites? Thanks! Geri
Fantastic holiday

We have just returned from holiday at the Riu Mambo and had a fantastic time. We got married over there and the staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble and the location was excellent - decorated with flowers and made really special. One thing that really made the holiday was the animation team, felix, heino, crazy franklin, absolutely brilliant. They do ask you to join in the games but don't pester you if you say no. A group of 12 of us went out for the wedding and all enjoyed it. We learnt how to do merengue dancing, salsa dancing, loads of fun. They also get you up on stage in the evening to do the club dances which are great. The hotel is spotlessly clean and staff seem to work round the clock, everyone is so friendly. We used the facilities of the other 2 hotels as well, the pool at the Bachata is the best with a swim up bar. The entertainment that they provide at night is a little cheesy especially the Grease show where they mime the songs but they all work really hard at what they do. Riu Mambo - very, very good!!!
Excellent the Best Ever

I loved this hotel, it was great for a good price, Fabulous service and so much to see at all the other 2 hotels that you have access to. The activities are endless and the other paid tours are definitely worth it. The club is only okay depending on what music you like but there are clubs to go to in the city that are easy access by cab. Mambo is great and secluded the rooms are meticulously clean its awesome. The food is great as well as the alacarte restaurants i checked this website before i booked and read reviews i must say they convinced me and i will go back or to any other RIU hotel definitely 5 star service.
THanks Riu Mambo TV reception and other amenities were great. just fabulous. A dream vacation
Animation - very, very good!!

Just returned from a wk. at Riu Mambo - WOW!! What a fabulous resort.
We had a room in the first building closest to the pool and front lobby on the 2nd floor. There were 2 queen beds in the room and it was kept amazingly clean every day by our maid 'Rita'. The rooms were ready when we arrived which was a welcome relief as the flight down was very uncomfortable - full flight and no legroom for anyone. I'm 5'5" and my knees touched the back of the seat in front of me! Thank God it was only a 4 hr. flight.
I can't say enough about the staff at this resort. They are truly amazing. Nothing was too much trouble!!! I especially enjoyed the nightly entertainment put on by the very talented Animation Team.
Special thanks to Pedro, Adonis & Heano, as well as Janina and Betty who made us feel very special. You really don't have to leave the resort as they have everything there you could want. You can dine around at the Riu Merengue or the Riu Bachata for breakfast or lunch, but you have to eat dinner at the resort you are staying at. The week we were there, the weather was never below 34 C, and it stayed that hot right up until midnite. Since the dining room is not air-conditioned, it was a little unbearable to spend any time there. When you are being assigned your table for dinner each evening, ask for a table at the front of the room as it way too hot at the back. Our table was #32 and it was quite near to the station where they prepare the hot meals.
That, combined with the heat outside made it very uncomfortable, and many nites was downright nasty!
That said, we would not hesitate to come back to this fine establishment and hope to in March or April '04. RIU MAMBO very, very, nice!!!
An excelent experience

Our holidays at the Riu Mambo are jujst unforgettable. It's not only the location of the three hotels (Mambo, Merengue and Bachata) what's breathtaking. It's the warm people, the excellent cuisine and the friendly atmosphere that surrounds you from the moment you get there.
The rooms are always clean, with very friendly service. The meals, buffet or restaurants, offer plenty of choices, even for vegetarians (something not so common in some resorts).
The facilities are great. You can wander between the pools of the three resorts, or enjoy the endless beach area. Most amazing, the architecture is designed in a way (no more than two stories buildings) which makes it non intrusive at all. In fact, from the beach, you can hardly see any building, all you see is palm trees andwhite sand.
All in all, it was an amazing week. The entertainment team makes sure you cannot feel bored at all, and the place is big enough to be on your own or go for a long walk.
Definitively, something to recommend. If you have further questions, e-mail me. I am willing to share my experience there!

This was the trip of a lifetime-The animation staff was incredible, they made us feel at home. I want to send a special hello to Ramon, thank you for making this unforgettable. Any one of the RIU hotels is worth visiting. A week later I'm still wondering what everyone is doing. Don't hesitate-my friend and I booked this trip as the last before my wedding, and I have no regrets. Animacion-we miss you very much. Keep doing what you're doing!

travelled everywhere Mambo is the best
by A TripAdvisor Member
Have travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean, and the Mambo is one my favourite destinations. The staff is terrific, and the beach is fabulous. If you like the look of Cancun - miles and miles of hotels - then this is definitely NOT the place for you. Returning again for three weeks this time, can hardly wait.

There is a nice place off Saona Island. I don't know of any tour opperator though. It is used by divers alot so I'm sure one can find out by asking them. For the most part, from what I've seen around PC is few colorful fish and alot of dead coral. If you have been snorkling before, just go to the island.

Off the Mambo beach there is not much to see in the water. If you walk down the beach past the gazebo on the point you will find a beach with the water sport place. From here you can book a snorkelling trip for $30US or so. They will take you to Sosua where there are mostly colourful fish. Try www.debbiescaribbeanresortreviews.com for more resort info.
The Mambo beach is a golden colour and there are some areas of rocks in the water. You might like to bring water shoes. Also don't forget you can use the facilities at the RIU Merengue and Bachata as well. I fould lunch at the Buffet at Bachata to be the nicest. Have a lovely vaction.

We stayed at the Riu Merienge, it was great had use of the facilities at Riu Bachata and Mambo. Great Place but beach not that great. Make sure you take water shoes, there are load of rocks in the sea. The water is not for snorkelling as you can not see much, very cloudy from the sand being churned up with the waves. But I believe their are better snorkelling areas of water further up the coast. BUT overall you will enjoy the facitilies the hotel has to offer. Have a great time. We did!!
Riu Mambo in March
by EricWa
Hey Everyone,
My wife and I are going to the Ria Mambo Resort in Puerto Plato, Dom Rep. in March and I was wondering what the weather will be like then. Nearest I can tell, it looks like it will be around 75-80 degrees. Is this true? I would like to have a really good tan to bring back to the people here in the snow. Do you think it will be possible? Also, we would like to rent some horses to ride on the beach. Has anyone done that, and how was it?
Thanks, Eric

Riu Mambo!! *stands up and applauds*
Yes, i've been told Riu hotels are really good.
About the tan, dont worry, you can get a tan over here even in December. Weather usually is warm (for us.. hot for you) and really sunny.
Horses (ewwww... i hate horses) yes, i've done that in Puerto Plata, you're gonna have fun and, belive me, LOTS of fun! :). When i did that horse thing i wasnt as affraid of horses as i am now, so i had soo much fun, going around the place and around the beach.
Take Care,

Hello,
I would CANCEL your trip to Rui Mambo Resort.
Look on www.tripadviser.com and see that many people are getting very very sick. 12 of us just got back and we and 90% at resort sick, and when they came home are still sick and missing work. We are still sick and we are trying to get our boys home that are still there. We are still sick and going to the doctors. Worse trip ever!!!!!!
They are trying to get our kids out of there and they are trying to shut them down until they take care of the problem. People there were on IV's and some sent to hospital. So call your agent and change your trip so you don't suffer like all of us.
