Chic Hotel: Casa Colonial

This is by far the nicest most luxurious hotel on the North Coast, and most expensive. If you want to buy a real treat, go for it. Everything as far as the small hotel was concerned was first rate. The design and decor exceeded our expectations. A great deal to attention, just go by there and confirm for yourself.
Now the down side, the restaurant which is lovely lacks in service, I mean they forgot to bring my appetizer when they brought my wife’s, had to ask 2 times for a napkin and they overcharged but reluctantly corrected the bill. However, the food was slightly better than good.

Hotel Castilla: it ain't the Ritz but for the budget traveler

Hotel Castilla is the oldest still running hotel in Puerto Plata, located very close to Parque Central. The Victorian building itself *needs* a face lift (so if you're looking for cheap luxury this isn't the place for you) and, like most buildings of its era, isn't handicap friendly. We paid 450 pesos (about 13.25US) for a double room with cable TV (we like watching TV right before going to bed) and breakfast. The room itself was OK, clean and without private bathroom, but for the one night it was fine by us as the bathroom was just around the corner. They showed us 2 rooms so that we could decide which one to keep. If you get to choose rooms, choose the ones not facing the street because it's noisy at all times basically.

On checking in you get to pay a 100 pesos (about 3US) deposit for your room key and a 200 pesos (about 6US) deposit for a towel, that you get back on checking out.

Should you want to go out and come back after they close, there's a separate entrance that you unlock with your key.

The breakfast included in the price was eggs, toast, potatoes and coffee but if you want something else they have a menu.

Unique Quality: They also have weekly, monthly and long term rates if you need a cheap place to live there. Talk to Joanne Keefer and she'll accommodate you.

Punta Goleta: 3-star going on 1-star

When we visited Punta Goleta Beach Resort it was owned by the hotel chain Barceló (year 2002). My friends and I booked rooms for a long weekend and we couldn't have been more disappointed. The TV's had only 2 channels and the image was grainy (it was pouring down when we came so we thought we could watch some TV while waiting for the rain to stop), there wasn't much entertainment over there even after the rain, their activity program shone with its absence and there was LOTS of small, black bugs that we Dominicans call "mimes" (don't know how they're called in English).

I don't know if the quality has improved since we haven't been back but it seems to have gotten better according to reviews at Debbie's Dominican Travel. I would personally NOT recommend this hotel even to my worst enemy.

Unique Quality: The buffet restaurant was good and the beds were comfortable.
