Scuba diving in Sosua, half way between Puerto Plata and Cabarete. The most exciting experience I challenged in DR.
February is a carnival month, fiesta at Malecon , Peurto Plata
Bacardi island, near Samana bay , a beautiful place to spend a couple of hours after whale watching
Being in DR and not visiting a cigar factory, it`s a shame . I was amazed with a perfect technique of making extremely high quality hand made cigars by qualified local people
Cock fight, very popular Sunday afternoon entertainment for most of male population in DR.
Cosita rica, local Puerto Plata beach
Juan Dolio, a small place on the southern coast, near Boca Chica, not far from Santo Domingo
.......... one more shot...........

Puerto Plata east to Las Terrenas
by cwhit21
Im heading down there beginning of Jan. My questions are what are my options for getting to this resort in that area? Im still waiting on a email back from the place. Also what are decent cheap options for staying in Puerto Plata overnight before I head east. Any advice or other thoughts are appreciated. Also anybody ever get any vt meets down there?

Let me also add, what about landing in Santiago and staying a night there and heading NE to Las Terrenas? Thanks.

If you don't want to stay at an All Inclusive (AI) in Puerto Plata, check out "Puerto Plata Beach Resort and Casino", a non AI hotel in the city, otherwise I have stayed at Hotel Castilla, a very affordable and centric hotel, very popular with tourists and expats living down there. As far as I know, the good AI's are outside of Puerto Plata city and in Playa Dorada, Sosúa and Cabarete.
Also, landing in Santiago and staying there before heading to Las Terrenas isn't a bad idea, but beware that Santiago is NOT a tourist city but you'll find decent (and maybe more expensive than in Puerto Plata) accommodations at Hotel Aloha Sol and Matum, but I haven't stayed in either.
Check out more accommodations possibilities in Puerto Plata and Las Terrenas at http://www.dr1.com/directories/ and then scroll down to "Hotels" or www.debbiesdominicantravel.com (with reviews).
IF you don't mind my asking, which place are you waiting an answer from?

from puerto plata to las terrenas you have to get several guaguas (little van buses).
you'd most likely have to go like this:
Puerto Plata-Sosua
Sosua-Rio San Juan
and then connecting towns who's names i don't remember tho. but head towards samana and you'll get there.
