Rooms aren't anything special but the location and the beach at Morne Rouge more than make up for it. There is a good place to eat, a good bar and even a little nightclub -all right there.
Forget about their "store" do your shopping for groceries over at the supermarket behind GA beach and grab a cab to get back if you're hauling much stuff. Kitchens are well outfitted. The beach at Morne Rouge is GREAT and proximity to GA beach is about 10 minutes walking if you really need more people or another place to eat. Pass on the restaurant next door, up the hill at the Mariposa -food is OK but over priced. The Sur la Mer at the Gem is a better deal but more casual.
Very nice looking beach hotel just 1,5 meter from the beach at Mourne Rouge Bay. The bay is just around the corner from the city St George, about half an hour with taxi from the airport at Grenada.
According to the website the least one can book is for three nights, but we stayed there for just one, although paid a bit extra for that. They offer appartments, all with seawiew, and with one or two bedrooms.
When we arrived in the evening we went directly down to the bar, from where you can sit more or less on the beach. Just perfect. In the room next door is the restaurant, so you can sit in the bar while the staff prepares your table. It's also here you'll get the breakfast in the morning, with a view right out on the bay. Too bad I was there with eight friends, otherwise I would say it would have been very romantic! :)
The appartments are clean, and big enough for 3-4 people. We were six in one of them, and that was a bit too much. But for one night, sure okay.
In the same place there is also a nightclub, Fantazia 2001, with nice club evenings some days a week.
Dinner at the restaurant was great, I had the special 3-meal dinner, which they had just started with. The head waitress afterwards came out and asked us about how we had liked it, just to make sure they made it even better next time.
Breakfast was very nice, nice with tropical fruits, although the rest was nothing special. We ordered a plate of pancakes just to be sure to be full, but for some reason they forgot to serve us that in the end. The view is amazing, perfect to start the vacation. The beach bar was amazing too, just perfect after 16 hours of flying from cold Sweden. I'll forever have Carib as my favourite beer after that night! :)
A bit far from the closest town, so if you want city life you should look somewhere else. Instead the resort is perfect for persons who looks for calmness and/or romance.
Beach was great, and so was the water. Just simply perfect!
We LOVED staying at the Gem Holiday Beach Resort. Morne Rouge beach is great and with the hotel, the beach and a decent place to eat (Sur le Mar) we didn't need a car. You can easily walk over to GA beach from the Gem and there are other places to eat only a short walk from the Gem. The nutmeg co-op is interesting but there is some pretty good snorkling on the left-hand (south) side of Morne Rouge Bay.
We heard about this place through our skipper, who said it was the best nightclub at the whole Grenada.
I would say it was a funny experience, but probably not the best party I've ever had.
The club is in the same place as the hotel, GEM holiday beach resort, and has special evenings on wednesday "Golden oldies" and fridays "ladies night".
We went there on a wednesday, but either I'm too young to remember the golden oldies, or the dj just had forgotten about it half the evening...?
The place is nice though, with a bar directly to your right when you get inside. Then there is a ring in the middle, which serves as dancefloor. Around it there are railings, so people who doesn't wish to dance can just stand there and look at the people who wish to do so.
It's a club mostly for locals, and the music is after that. A lot of soca and reggae music, and I must say that I got quite tired of it after a while on the dance floor.
Quite fancy club, and probably at least the locals need to dress up a bit extra to get inside. At least that was my thought after seeing the luxury cars that were waiting outside.
Got asked up for a dance by a nice girl, but I'm pretty sure she will regret that for the rest of her life. I have problems to lead back in Europe, and now with music that I never had heard before it got even worse...
In the end, when she overtook the lead, it went better at least. But my friends got something to laugh about for the next couple of days...
Good prices in the bar, 5 EC for a beer (1,50 euro). Think we paid 10 EC to get inside.
For bigger evenings, dress up nice. Our skipper was refused to enter on New Years, since he didn't had nice enough shoes.
