Sunset Surf Camp: Guadeloupe's Best Hostel

St. Francois is a lovely little beach town on the south part of Grand Terre Island in Guadeloupe.

I stayed at Sunset Surf Camp, a family run hostel which had dorm accommodation for 29 Euro per night, best I found on the island. I had one of three beds in the room, the others were empty during my entire 12 day stay. Most of the other guests were in private rooms leading on to the same common areas.

They also have private rooms of course and surf lessons are optional. Peyo and Babette's lovely series of covered patios with hammocks and sqinging chairs are perfectly arranged to catch the cool breezes and the place has free wifi, a book exchange, games, ping pong, basket of sporting equipment, bar etc. In short they had everything I wanted to make my stay pleasant. The rooms are off the patios with fans and good mosquito nets, an essential for the island. There is a nice pool and a kitchen for sharing. The beach is a five minute walk down the road.

I heartily recommend St.-Francois and Sunset Surf Camp.

1. Only shared accommodation prices I could find on this island and the best place I've stayed in my 6 month voyage.

2. Dogs are welcome. Not important for me but could be for others.

3. Peyo and Babette are super friendly.

4. Beautiful Shower

5. French bakery and small grocery 5 minute walk.

6. Bicycle available for borrowing.

7. Peyo speaks english.

La Plantation Resort Golf & Spa: Excellent luxurious accomodations in St François

First of all, the residence is located in a rather cute little town by the seaside and when you arrive in front of the hotel what stroke me was that the hotel has class. It is a large alley flanked by palm trees that gets you in front of the first building that holds the reception. The building is very nice and impressive in a colonial style.

The red roughcast is warm and gives a majestic mood to the building. There are many copses around but no garden. When you step into the red building you find a huge reception nicely decorated in a carribean atmosphere with yellow, orange and wooden panels. A lot of fresh flowers make it even more attractive. The reception building is made up of a huge mezzanine that holds 2 meeting rooms. There are 2 huge staircases on each side of the reception and it is really lovely.

After having gotten our magnetic bedroom key card we went to another impressive building of blue colour with huge balconies. We arrived into our room which had a view of the swimming pool. Our room was huge more than 480 square feet (45m²). Our superior room had a bad with a canopy, a fully-equipped kitchen including a dishwasher (you are on holidays, aren't you?) and a bathroom and toilet separated. Furnitures are from Bali.

The king size bed is of excellent quality and we slept like babies. The terrace is about 215 square feet (20m²) and there are a nice rattan table and chairs and a matching sunbed. The view of the swimming pool is gorgeous and at night it is beautifully lit. What thrilled me the most in this hotel was the perimeter overflow pool with a beach-like surrounding and the Spa.....
Let's get to the point: a major plus point of this hotel is its Spa 5 Worlds; to start with the masseuses are rather beautiful are totally inclined to make you have a great unfogettable time. You get into a subdued light changing room... and then into a space of relaxation: smell, zen music, buddha sculptures, etc. The rooms are tastefully decorated as well.

As to activities, there are aquagym lessons are given several times a week and there is a tenis court open even during the night. Le Golf St Francois is about 2 300 feet (700 m) and has been entirely upgraded; it is a nice and pleasant 18 hole golf around a lake and the hotel guests enjoy 20% off.

Huge room, fully-equipped kitchen, big balcony, huge perimeter overflow pool, golf next door, heavenly beaches 20 min walk, nice little town, probably the best spa in town
