Marigot
by Fam_Stoica
Marigot is the capital of the French part of Saint Martin. The French atmosphere is overall present : lovely streets, nice houses with gingerbread decorations, boutiques and restaurants. Don't miss the Marina Royale or a superb view from Fort Louis.

Baie l'Orient
by lewistfo
Grosse vie sale!
Fort Louis
by bsfreeloader
Constructed in 1767 by order of French King Louis XVI to protect Marigot from pirates of British and Dutch descent, Fort Louis is not much more today than a few crumbling rock walls and some left-over cannons. But it is worth climbing up to see for the sweeping view of Marigot, its harbor, and nearby Anguilla. Although not particularly well marked, it is impossible to miss the fort if you simply look up from the Marigot waterfront.
First stop on Nov 07 cruise empress of the seas

"St Martin Dutch side cruise port"
This was our 11 day cruise on Royal Caribbean Empress of the Seas in Nov 07 first stop;
The cruise port was well organized. Lots of taxi driver begging for business. We walked to the port entrance and turned left and it was a 10 minute walk to the little shops and the beach we passed a ship yard on our walk and a dive shop also. It's not a place to walk around very easy right out of the port entrance is the main road heavy traffic, there is a bus service here also. That would have been the way we would have traveled around if we had time.
The salt water there was so salty that it was very easy to float in. No snorkeling here water was a little wavey also there is a 3 foot drop off when you get in the ocean here, be careful I fell in the ocean the first time walking down to get in and scratched up my legs from sliding down into.
Lots of little shells to pickup and will keep you busy for hours shell hunting wear some type of swim shoes/booties the ocean bottom was rough with all the little shells.
Had a great time floating :) and picking up lots and lots of the tiny shells. We found the little shops with people trying to sell you something anoying after awhile constant peddliing on the beach and sidewalks, and more than few drunks wobbling around. I don't think it was safe for younger teens by themselves here. We were on the dutch side so there was no nudity on the beach but the french side is another story lots of nudity. We didn't have time to travel the island :( so we just enjoyed our day floating in the beautiful salty water.
