Mercure Simson: A nice place to stay
The entire stay was extremely pleasant. The food was good (sometimes à la carte, sometimes buffet), the staff amiable, and the room tidy. For the price I would expect much more lavish accommodations but you can be sure it's nothing dirty or rundown. The beach was very good, and they had lots of activities.

Plenty on the French side: Small hotels are big deal
I would stay away from the big hotels on the island. Most of them are good, but often a bit on the expensive side. I did, and would go either to one of the many small hotels, or rent a studio, condo, villa, ... There are so many choices, and they are price wise very attractive. Small hotels around Oyster Pond, Mont Vernon, Orient Beach are often between $ 70 -$ 100, are nice, quiet, and friendly. Or take a studio for less then $ 500 a week.
Most places have pools, and great views. There are very few directly on the beach, mostly a short walk. The accommodation on the French side tend to have smaller rooms (Europe like), the ones on the Dutch side might be more adjusted to US-standards, but might be in a busy or noisier part of the island, e.g. close to the airport. Watch out, where it is located.

Sunsail Charters: Charter from Oyster Pond
Service was excellent. 42' Beneteau sloop with everything working(!). Roller furling main and jib, power windlass w/ remote control, autohelm, gps, wine rack.
Seaworthy and fast, easily singlehanded. Although there were four aboard I was frequently alone at the helm.

Mary's Boon: A very fine island inn.
Our beach-front studio was delightfully bright & airy, with a lovely view of the sunrise, the sunset, & the beach. The TV is pre-historic, but who's going for the TV ? The features of this very atmospheric island inn are charming and comfortable.
Room 203 is a good second floor, corner room. Rooms 114-116 (one of which can easily become a two bedroom villa by combining it with 111) are the premier walk-out-the-door-onto-the-beach accomodations.
When you arrive from the USA in the late afternoon, the family-style meal following cocktails in the well-equipped honor bar is the most relaxing way to begin your relaxing stay. The food is good quality, albeit simple so if the items on the nightly-changing fixed menu sound as if they might be appealing, do not hesitate.
When I return to St. Marteen, I'll not even look for a different place to stay.
There's a trick to the free goodies on a Monday (breakfast and sunset sail) -- nobody tells that you must sign up for them considerably in advance (Sunday night).
It is adjacent to the airport, on Simpson Bay. And I do mean adjacent, like in contiguous. Can you hear the planes ? Of course. Do they make you lose any sleep ? Improbable. The latest we heard one was @ 10 p.m. & almost none fly out after dark. They are part of the charm & the beach itself here more than makes up for it -- unexpectedly private, and as pretty as any on the island. The honor bar is a charming feature. The casual, warm, friendly interplay among the owners, the guests, and the all-but-indentured staff is a big plus.
Taxi service is available, but renting a car gives you much more flexibility with meals, shopping, etc.
It has a very nice, small pool and the grounds are very attractive. There is wireless internet access, free of charge if you brought your laptop & take it to the lobby or the bar, (or if your room is right above them).

Sonesta Maho: Hotel Smotel
It doesn't really matter what hotel you stay at in St. Martin/ St Maarten- you probably won't be at it very long. Of course, cleanliness is key, but any clean hotel will do because your best bet is to rent t a car and visit all the beaches that dot the coastline. Every single beach has its own charm and by staying at the hotel you'll miss that.
I stayed at Sonesta Maho which was very nice. The beach is not great as it overlooks the airport, but since we didn't go to the beach at Maho, it didn't matter. Sonesta Maho was great American Style cleanliness and comfort and I would reccomend.

Jenny's Bed and Breakfast: Maho shared condo
The room was $100 (high season $120 - 200 more for A/C) for a very comfortable king sized bed, private bathroom, breakfast at 8 am, personal fridge and microwave, safe, and pick-up from the airport. It was a nice place to stay and was very clean. They gave us a key that did not work all week and gave excuses why it did not work. Make sure to check the key before you pay and ask them if it is going to be a problem to let you in! The guest room is IN Jenny's apartment and she does not like people to be there during the day and does not like to interupted. She refused us entry a number of times. My mistake as I've since learned that B&B's mean one is out for the day. It's their home afterall.
Also, at the end of your stay if they offer you private water taxi to the airport rather than dropping you off themselves, make sure you pay the man at the dock, not the boat operator (captain). There is a fee to dock and the captain will take your money and head off so realize you are providing a tip if you give him money. I say it is not worth the cost. Take the drive from Jenny and her husband instead. It is nice to take the private water taxi to Marigot. They will offer that to you too. That is without cost other than a tip if you do tip. There is a friendly dog on the premises.
She will try and tell you that you need a car because it is a long walk in on an isolated road. She becomes worried if people are alone on the road. It is NOT doable after dark that's for sure.
There is a weight room (gym) and an outdoor infinity water pool

Maho Beach Resort & Casino: Nice pool, nice views, that's about it!
We travelled to the Maho during our Honeymoon in July of 2003. We had great expectations for this hotel; mainly because of the huge dollars we spent to stay their. The facilities were nice and clean, even though they tried to cheat us out of our honey moon suite and give us a room with a view to the a/c compressors and storage yard! They finally made good on the room we paid for; but only after I threatened to unpack our luggage in the lobby and sleep on the sofa.
The service staff were not overly friendly; down right rude for the most part.
Great pools, Food was good, not much variety though. A few other bars close to hotel. Recommend walking over to the small tiki bar near the end of the runway for cheap beer, and a change of pace and scenery!

Mercure Coralia Simson Beach: Nice place to stay
Nice hotel. Each room has a kitchenette on the balcony which is handy. Try and get a room on the lagoon side since you will not be facing the street.
The pool is great. They have aquafit classes once every couple of days. The beach onto the lagoon is ok, but I wouldn't go swimming. You need to leave the hotel to get to a beach.
Fairly close to Marigot (main town on French side of island).
Staff are friendly.

Mary's Boon Plantation House: A Value
Nice rooms. I paid $90.00/night in October. It's near the airport but the noise is not noticeable very often and planes stop flying by 10pm.

L'Esperance Hotel: Reasonable and comfortable hotel
Small, comfortable hotel on the Dutch side. About 1 mile from Phillipsburg. Very friendly and accommodating management. Rooms are suites, with refrigerator and stove top. Very reasonable prices. They also have a car rental agency that was fairly priced and convenient.
Quiet neighborhood, pool, bar, suites include kitchen.

L'Hoste Hotel: Casual elegance on Orient Beach!
This is absolutely the best place to stay on Orient Beach! They have great specials in the off-season, and the rooms are wonderful! The staff really does everything they can to make sure you have a nice stay, and that you'll want to come back. I couldn't imagine staying anywhere else.
Located on the best beach on the island, this resort also offers brick oven pizzas in the evening for dinner, and a lunchtime beach restaurant with general grill items (hamburgers, salads, etc.) and a full bar. They also have a continental breakfast buffet in the mornings. There is a decent sized pool, and all of the rooms have marble bathrooms that are gigantic! Most rooms also have a microwave, sink, and fridge. The rooms themselves are nicely furnished, and very spacious! You can get either a garden view (with discretely placed hedges blocking the beach for your privacy) or an ocean view higher up with it's own balcony. Many rooms also have VCR's and the hotel offers a selection of videos for rental on those evenings when you'd rather stay in, or the infrequent rainy day. If you get up early enough, you can get one of the coveted "cubbies" on the beach which is a tall curved shelter with it's own sizable cushion on which to relax. Say hi to Philippe, the tall guy who is constantly running about, and actually owns the place!

Great Bay Resort: Not my favorite place....a bit tacky for my taste
I had to stay here when my flight out was cancelled, and I wouldn't stay here again if you paid me. There's no regular restaurant open for dinner just to get a sandwich or something......just an inclusive fixed menu dinner in the dining room with (at the time) pretty tacky entertainment, and mauve and pink decor everywhere......yeesh. The rooms where a bit shabby, and even though located right on the beach in Philippsburg, it doesn't even compare to Orient beach. The sands on the beach here are obviously brought in to replenish for erosion, because its made up of crushed shells, etc. Not too nice on the bare feet.
The only reason to stay here is if you'd rather be right close the casinos in Philippsburg. There is a small one-room casino in-house as well.
