8 hrs layover in GUA airport

by sakuyaini

Hi,

We have an 8 hrs layover in the Guatemala city airport.

1. Does anyone know if there is (already) a place to leave our bags in the airport ? I saw some posts about this in 2007 that there is no such thing, but I'm wondering if anyone know how it is now.

2. Is the main plaza in Guatemala city close enough to the airport that we can get out of the airport during our layover and wander around ?

Thanks
Maria

As far as I know, there is still no place to leave bags there and your airline will likely only open a ticket booth to check in too close to the departure to do you any good. Downtown is a good distance away, but you won't be far from the Zona Viva, AKA Zone 10. I bet that if you got a 30Q cab ride to Casa Chapina and were planning to eat a meal there (highly recommended) then or later, I suspect that they would let you leave your locked bags there while you explore the area. Casa Chapina has great Guatemalan cooking and is just down the street from the Holiday Inn, so there is no problema getting a cab back, although the drivers may have an exalted idea of how much you can afford.

You could also start out by leaving your locked bags with the entry guard at the nearby Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology after taking a cab there. You would see an interesting museum and then head to Casa Chapina. This would help fill out your time nicely.

Travel Tips for Guatemala City

The Metropolitan Cathedral and...

by la_beba

The Metropolitan Cathedral and the churches of La Merced, San Miguel de Capuchinas and Santo Domingo are examples of a transition stiles from the Barroque to the Neoclassic. The Hermitage of El Carmen, which gave name to the valley where the capital is settled, goes back to 1620. This is a picture of the Cathedral..... though there was under construction work in main plaza where fountain is as you can see, when I visited.

Botanical Garden at the Universidad de San Carlos

by thelukey

The Botanical Garden at the Universidad de San Carlos is another good place to escape the traffic and noise of Guatemala City. For more flower pictures, check out my Jardín Botánico travelogue. Admission to the Jardín Botánico, and the much less-impressive Natural History Museum that it is attached to, costs Q10 ($1.30).

French Lyceum.

by euzkadi

This building built in 1793 using the same style of the constructions of Antigua is maybe the oldest private house in the city. It has a magnificent entrance portico, and actually is the home of a private school. The brigadier Gabino Gainza one of the leaders of the independence from Spain lived here when it was negociated.

Very typical Central America

by jlanza29

Guatemala City is very typical to other Central American Capitals.....not very touristy.....but with the right people Guatemala City could be enjoyed greatly. The prices are excellent, and the people very friendly. The food is a bargain, and it's worth a splurge to go to the top restraunts in the city !!! Night outings are realtively safe, but use common sense and caution when entering bars, and clubs !!!!
