Which Zone to stay in Guatemala? Zone 10?

by jumpingnorman

I am trying to decide where to stay in Guatemala - an agent is sending me info on hotels at Zone 10...but I also saw the Hotel Grand Tikal Futura which is at Zone 11 but looks very nice...any thoughts that might "jump" into your mind will be highly appreciated, JumpingNorman :)

Saludos Norman. I suggest you look up a Hotel in ANTIGUA that use to be an old mission or convent. Can remember the name but recall it whaou'd me.

I was recommended by a local friend to stay, and I stayed, in Zone 10. There is an hangout area, where most hotels are grouped, with restaurants and bar where you can walk. In zone 10, the midrange hotel Best Western Stofella provides good value for money.

A second time, just overnighting in GC, I stayed in Zone 9, closer to the airport, and I ended up taking a taxi and going for dinner in Zone 10.

I don't know Zone 11 but I would guess it is OK if you are just planning staying in the hotel while if you are planning some hangout you will eventually end up catching a taxi and going to Zone 10.

I don't know anything about zone 10 and 11 in Guatemala, but as Julio says staying in Antigua is a nice option. You can easily take a taxi from Antigua to Guatemala airport.

The convent converted into a hotel in Antigua that Julio writes about is Casa Santo Domingo (www.casasantodomingo.com.gt/). It is too expensive for me, but I have visited the museums there and I have been drinking a beer in the lobby. It looks really great!

In Zone 10, you can walk around at night and it has fine restaurants and nightclubs. You are also close to three worthwhile museums and the zoo.

For fine Guatemalan cuisine and regional specialties from around the country, try Casa Chapina and Arrin Cuan in Zone 10.

Gran Tikal Futura is elegant

by vabchtraveler

It's been several years, but I stayed at the Grand Tikal and found it wonderful! The rooms were very nice, the staff extremely helpful and pleasant, and the indoor pool was delightful. The added bonus is that it is connected to the mall next door. So you have access to shopping, an internet cafe, and the food court (Taco Bell, would you believe?) the restaurant in the hotel is quite good and resonably priced, too. be sure to make the breakfast buffet if they still have it. I used this hotel as my base while I made day trips to Puerto San Jose, Champerico and Antigua. All were nice places to visit. My absolute favorite though, was Panajachel and Lago Atitlan. My, oh my -- simply fantastic!! That beautiful lake is surrounded by 3 volcanoes. And, it was incredibly inexpensive there. I literally shopped til I dropped. I hope you have a delightgul stay. I don't think you'll be disappointed in the Grand Tikal.

Travel Tips for Guatemala City

Guatemala City Tip

by John195123

the only thing I really rememeber about Guatemala City is standing outside a friend's house on a warm, cloudy, misty day, on the road, looking beyond a barbedwire fence that separated me from all of a coffee tree orchard except for a few branches of one tree that hung over the fence into the road. It was a great sight!

MUSEO NACIONAL DE ARQUEOLOGIA Y ETNOLOGIA

A REALLY GOOD MUSEUM ALL ABOUT THE MAYA CULTURE (BOTH ANCIENT AND PRESENT DAY). STUFF INCLUDES STONE SCULPTURES, MASKS, LARGE SCALE MODELS OF ALL THE MAYA RUINS, INDIGENOUS DRESSES WORN BY WOMEN ACCORDING TO THE TRIBE THEY COME FROM, ETC.

I WOULD'VE TOOK PHOTOS OF THIS PLACE BUT UNFORTUNATELY YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO USE CAMERAS INSIDE THE MUSEUM.

This old french style shopping arcade was built in 1926 and is close to the Main Plaza. It´s full of jewelry shops, old libraries and the oldest bar in the city "El Portalito" a bohemian bar with live marimba (it is said that among the most famous clients of the place, were the Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and Pablo Neruda).

La Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción/ Guatemala City

"Home is, where the Heart is"

Ok, so this is my new home. Since beginning of january I live in the capital. It is located in a mountain valley in the south central part of the country. Bit by bit I am getting to know the city, though I have to say it really goes bit by bit as most of the time I am working, partying or sleeping, not much time left to see the city; well, compared to earlier trips I haven`t seen too much.
About the places I like best here are Sopho`s, some of the cities shopping malls, Jacobo`s internet cafe, 4° Norte and Gimnasio Siete de Diciembre.
Of course I got to know a whole lot of people, most of them Guatemalans por supuesto, as there is Rubén, caretaker of the Colegio, Jacobo, friend of mine, and Walter, another friend of mine.
Also there are an awful lot of kids ... well, I think that`s what it is like, working in a kindergarden ... which I like pretty much, and there parents of which some are really cute!
Well ... now it`s time to sleep, going to bed now.

Ah, I forgot to mention, that I finally managed to rent my own apartement together with a friend/collegue of mine, and a third one`s gonna join us in april. I did all the work though, that`s why I took myself the nicest and biggest one of the three dormitories. The area I live in is secure, Zona 14, and our neighbours are priests ... imagine that combined with Anna listening to Guns n Roses and whatever all day long hahaha ...
By the way .. I just started giving German classes today ... Juan Carlos is such an excellent pupil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tomorrow I gonna make music workshop, we gonna create some nice instruments to make music; today I had preparation course for prueba in may ... Janni I loooooooooooove you so much, and Josiah and Andrés and Esteban jajaja.
