This hostel was cheap, but very run down. I had a ok room, and the toilet and bathroom was shared and not too clean. The last night I stayed here my sleep was disturbed by a prostitute staying at the hotel, so I was glad that I left the next day. I stayed here because of the cheap price and because I met some nice people here. All rooms faced a nice courtyard, where one could relax or talk to fellow travellers and enjoy the sun that sometimes warmed us.
I payed 20 Q pr. night (year 2001 prices). Be aware that the nights here can be very cold (I was here in january). I slept with a sheet, two blankets, a bedcover and a coat! Theme: HostelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: 7. Calle 15-36

It's about five or six blocks from Parque Central ... a nice hostel with plenty of really cheap private rooms (Q$ 30, around USD 4.25), and a huge dorm with way too many beds (Q$ 20). There are two kitchens, a nice yard/garden, balconies. All the restrooms are shared, and showers may be a bit cold (not always). VERY SPACIOUS CLEAN ROOM, PRIVATE BATHROOM, ALTHOUGH I DIDN'T LIKE THE EXPOSED WIRE ON THE SHOWER SO BE CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH IT WHILST TAKING A SHOWER! THE DOWNSIDE WAS THAT THE WINDOWS OVERLOOKED THE RECEPTION AREA INSTEAD OF OUTSIDE ALTHOUGH NOT TO WORRY AS THERE AERE CURTAINS PROVIDED. YOU'RE ALSO NOT EXEMPT FROM ANY NOISE OUTSIDE ESPECIALLY IF FIREWORKS GO OFF.
THE HOTEL HAS A COMFATABLE SEATING AREA BY THE RECEPTION AND I THINK THEY HAD A CAFE NOT QUITE SURE. BUT THERE'S DEFINATELY A DRINKS VENDING MACHINE INSIDE. Hotel Modelo has two units located a few yards from each other on the same street. The main unit is better by far than the annex, which although very quiet and clean, is a bit gloomy. The rooms in the annex are quite large and are furnished in heavy wooden colonial style. The staff is very friendly and most are able to speak English. The main unit is a superb old colonial Spanish-type house, with a large indoor patio, around which the rooms are located. The dining room is quite attractive. This hotel is popular with travel groups so is often fully booked. A good buffet breakfast is included in the price of the room.
The main unit...a great old colonial residence not far from the main square. Theme: HotelPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: 14 av 2 and 31 (annex)Phone: 7761-2529Directions: Five blocks from main squareOther Contact: fax 7763-1376

Hotel Real Virginia is located one block south of the main square (Parque Centro América) on a quiet side street. What strikes anyone who walks in the lobby is that you immediately notice that the central part of the hotel overlooks a basement car park, which is pretty weird! Luckily, the garage is rarely full and during my stay I didn't notice any car fumes. The rooms are all quite nice, with carpeted floors and decent beds. Bathrooms are clean and come with a heavy-duty shower, plenty of hot water and good pressure. A desk is provided and there is cable TV with American and Mexican stations. There are nice touches like monogrammed bedsheets and towels and free coffee and ice water. As well, there is a roof-top patio with tables and chairs with parasols. Service is extremely friendly and the manager loves to practice his English with guests. One drawback is that the rooms have no windows. Nevertheless, an excellent choice in this price range ($17/single)!
Confortable beds. Monogrammed sheets and towels. Plenty of hot water and good pressure in the shower. Carpeted floors. Weird architecture with all rooms overlooking basement car park. Free coffee.
