Casa Madeliene: Charming, quaint and great value
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed at the Casa Madeleine for the entire stay while in Antigua. While the property is a few blocks walk from the main square, it is by no means longer than a 10-15 minute walk. This lovely B&B offers many comforts, including daily cooked-to-order breakfast.
We found the service good, the facilties clean and attractive, and the staff friendly. This B&B has a small spa in which you can arrange all the usual treatments; pedicures, manicures, massages, facials and other treatments are all available.
The B&B will arrange airport pick-up and can reserve several tours around the area. The tours are the same as what all the other agencies in town offer, but the prices are more expensive at the B&B. We arranged our Tikal excursion with an agency.
I would not hesitate to recommend or to stay again at the Casa Madeleine. At USD105 per night, it is a good value compared to prices in the US or Europe.
They also provide free internet access, which was a nice service.

Nice views, great breakfasts, quiet (only six rooms), beautiful surroundings.

As is typical with an Antiguan property (with its 10 ft. walls and imposing doors), your jaw will drop when you cross the threshold from the street. You are greeted with lush foliage that will lead you to the front desk. Once at the front desk, you may feel the need to genuflect and make the sign-of-the-cross (even if you're not Catholic), because it does resemble an altar and seems to command reverance. But the staff will treat you like a personal guest and will provide excellent service. The rooms are decorated in a colonial Spanish motif with big, dark furniture that is very comfortable....for $80 dbl, you can't go wrong.

This is a top-of-the-line hotel (at least 4 star) that is built on the grounds of the Santo Domingo Monastery. Gorgeous grounds, including pool, include easy access to the ruins of the monastery. Excellent service.

Casa Santo Domingo: Best hotel in town
  • Satisfaction:
  • A former Monastery this luxurious hotel is absolutely wonderful! There are statues and sculptures in all hallways, stairways and corners. I explored the whole hotel and should confess that twice got scared by the life size wooden saints. However, the decoration and landscape design is beautiful.

The swimming pool is big enough to lap swim. There is an archaeological site inside the premises. The gardens are well kept and the restaurants have a nice breakfast buffet with ladies cooking tortillas and sopes.

    Casa Santo Domingo: Magnificent

  • I was here to attend a World Bank conference and stayed for 3 nights. Built on ruins of an old monastery - a unique pleasant experience!

I know of no other hotel that is built on ruins!

Ana Maria's house was built around 1400 AD. Only three bedrooms, a staff of 4, homemade breakfasts (be sure to try her chocolate caliente), lush courtyard garden, individual fireplaces in each bedroom and views of the surrounding volcanoes make this B&B a very special place to stay. It was like staying at someone's home. Forget staying at one of the Disney-esque hotels in Antigua - my staying here made Antigua a more personal experience.

My bedroom had a king size bed, fire place, walkin closets, huge modern bathroom and private patio garden. The breakfasts were simple but good - french toast, huevos rancheros, fresh fruit juices, chocolate caliente. Sitting in the courtyard garden reading in the morning, church bells ringing. The central park is only 1 1/2 blocks away (unlike Casa Santo Domingo, Panza Verde and Hotel Antigua which which were all a good distance from the center of town). I'll stay here again next time I'm in Antigua.

    Dos Loros Inn: Great hotel!
  • Satisfaction:
  • Just came back (summer 2008) from backpacking around Central America and finished my trip in Antigua, Guatemala, and stayed at Dos Loros Inn. HOtel stay was great, I promised them I'd write a great review because they really went the extra mile for me. After staying in some pretty 3rd world hotels in El Salvador, staying in Dos Loros Inn was great, just like home or even better. Huge rooms, the bathroom alone was alarger than most of the other hotel rooms you'll find in Central America, and not just a shower but a fullsized full bathtub. After walking on Antigua's cobblestone streets all day a hot bath is just what I needed, and you almost never find bathtubs in CA. It was great@!

Super clean, huge bathtubs, great view of the volcano taht everyone talks about. I was traveling on the cheap and try to avoid eating in restaurants all the time so having a nice clean kitchen to use to cook dinner in was great, and the manager, Marleni, helped me with the cooking!
