Visit but stay elsewhere

Rooms are not worth the money. Service is impersonal. Great place to have a wedding, which appears to be where their focus is, not on customer service.

Unique Quality: Beautiful setting built around the ruins of a domincan monastary. Excellent museums. Great place to visit but better service elsewhere.

Do not treat employees well

The hotel itself is very nice. The rooms are decorated and cleaned well and the restaurant is fantastic.
But the hotel treats its employees horribly. I stayed at this hotel with my family in January and we overheard the manager arguing with an employee who we had seen working around the hotel a few times. The employee seemed to be in a lot of distress so my dad asked him what was the matter.
He stated that he had been working at the hotel for 6 months, but had not been paid for the last three weeks. When he had asked for his check for the fourth time they fired him and another employee who also complained. They said that they could find someone else who wouldn't complain as much. He said that he needed his check so he could pay his rent and for his mom's medicine. How horrible is that?!
I knew that there was a lot of corruption in Guatemala but I hasn't seen it in person. I think that any hotel that treats its employees like that does not derserve to be in business.
Personally I will never return to that hotel and I urge other Trip Advisor members to do the same.

Wow! I wish that we'd stayed!

Elegant, Spanish colonial style ---hints of Moorish influence. Mmmmm. Nice.

It is opulant. It is just ...relaxation.

We were there for a buffet lunch ---and that was delicious. After the food we wandered and looked around. The bedrooms were sultry and the courtyards full of flowers, macaws and inspiritation.

We visited another hotel that day ---but this one was outstanding.

If ever we return then we will stay here!

Unique Quality: Old world and new world. In the middle of a city and yet far beyond!

Historical hotel

The Casa Santo Domingo is built upon the ruins of Santo Domingo, a Dominican monastery. The monastery was abandoned after a 1773 earthquake. You can visit the ruins and several museums on the site. It has 125 rooms available for accommodations.

Day and night of luxury

This is a five start hotel that is amazing. Within the hotel are church ruins that are slowly being restored. The room was beautiful with a fireplace, sunken tub, back patio, and totally breath taking views of the city at night. My friend and I stayed here on her last night in Antigua as a treat to ourselves because we were tired of cold showers, small pillows, and wanted a mini vacation. We paid about $80 for one night, what a good deal. This is also a hot spot for weddings and events. There is a nice pool too. AND there's an ATM too!

Unique Quality: Church ruins, museum, beautiful rooms, ATM.

Guatemala's Finest Hotel

The beautiful rooms at the Hotel Casa Santo Domingo have stucco, beams, tiles, fireplaces, terraces and tons of charm. We were here on two occasions, for a few days each time. We loved this hotel. The charm, history, location and ambiance made for a lovely respite during a very diverse trip. Try it. You won't be disappointed.

Unique Quality: This hotel was built amid the ruins of a convent. It's like staying in a museum. Although the ancient is everywhere, the hotel also has every modern convenience.

Magnificent

I was here to attend a World Bank conference and stayed for 3 nights. Built on ruins of an old monastery - a unique pleasant experience!

Unique Quality: I know of no other hotel that is built on ruins!

Room with a View

I had a pleasant stay. I don't believe any rooms have a terrible view. Most overlook one of the many fountains and the exotic birds on display.

Unique Quality: The view of the ruins is magnificent.

by netmadre

Is it possible to take a tour of Casa Santo Domingo if you aren't a guest there? How would one go about doing this?

Thanks

Thanks for your help. Did you use a tour operator of any kind while in Antigua or did you just wander around? What would you recommend?

Thanks again.
