The cathedral
The cathedral located at the east side of the Parque central dates from 1680 after the first one was demolished a few years before. It's certainly not the most beautifull church in town, but it's worth to take a look inside.

Street in Antigua
3a Calle Oriente
Altar, La Merced
Help, anyone. 2 years ago our family went to Antigua, we stayed at Posada Burkhard on 3a Calle Oriente. I recall it being about a 5 to 7 minute walk from the Park Central.
This year I am returning with three teen girls (ages 17 and 18, I am 49) and I would like to stay in a slihgtly cheaper lodging that is a similar distance from the Park. The girls need safe, semi-quiet, friendly, and they may be walking at night (though not too late). They don't need TV or private baths.
Can you help me figure out which is the best location and/or facility? This is the "short list" so far--
Posada Vero.....3 Calle Poniente #4
Hospedaje Casa Santa Luisa #4......Calzada Santa Luisa #5
Hotel Leon......7th Calle North
Guate-Linda.....7th Avenida Norte #80
Hostal Qachoch......3a Calle Poniente #3
El Hostal...1a Aveida Sur #8
Hostel 5........................
The Yellow House................
If you have any suggestions, please advise! Our budget is limited, about a max of $8 per person. Thanks so much! You can also email me
hi
a few choices jungle party or kafka i think they are right in the budget range. right now with the exchange 8 will give you about 8 times 8.23 exchange rate.
both are close to the park like 4 blocks.
you can ask for a deal from each of them for a discount you should get it.
search google maps for a map of antigua that will help.

Hi, When I was in Antigua we stayed at a very cheap place which was right across from the grocery store, I can't remember the name of it, maybe "la posada". But it was very cheap, $5pp and we had a private bathroom. It is very quite and safe since you have to ring a buzzer to get in, not the nicest looking place though, but pretty clean and short walk to central park. I have never been to Hostel 5 or El Hostel but I was also considering both of those places for my next trip. I saw good reviews for them and they include breakfast in the price.
Good luck and have a great trip!

The foundations of the first cathedral built in the new city of Santiago were laid in 1542, using the debris brought in by bishop Marroquin from Cuidad Vieja, the previous capital. Its construction and continuos repairs lasted throughout the rest of the century, caused by the delays from lack of funds and the earthquakes of 1651, 63, and 66.
The original roof was made of straw, which was later replaced with wood and a carved paneled ceiling. The demolition of this first cathedral began in 1669 in order to build the second cathedral at the same site. This was inaugurated eleven years later.
Antigua has one of the largest celebrations of Holy Week. The festivities begin before Easter week and one can see elaborate processions on various days. I was in Antigua pre-Semana Santa, but experienced a procession the Sunday before Palm Sunday. It was truly remarkable to see.
ALL OF ANTIGUA IS COBBLESTONE!!! That means that you need to wear Tevas or chaco-like shoes. Or tennis shoes. Its annoying at first but you get used to it. Bring rain jacket and/or umbrella. IT got cold at night and I froze. If you stay with a family you might have to provide your own Toilet paper and even bath towel.
ON THE NORTHSIDE OF ANTIGUA ON A HILL THERE'S A HUGE CROSS OVERLOOKING THE TOWN. TO REACH IT, YOU CAN EITHER WALK UP THE STEPS LOCATED AT THE FOOT OF THE HILL ON THE NORTHSIDE OF ANTIGUA OR YOU CAN DRIVE ON A LITTLE ROAD THAT COULD TAKE YOU UP THERE.
UPON REACHING THE CROSS ON CERRO DE LA CRUZ, YOU'LL SEE A SPECTACULAR VIEW OF ANTIGUA AS WELL AS OTHER SURROUNDING SETTLEMENTS AND A FULL VIEW OF THE AGUA VOLCANO WITH THE ACATENANGO AND FUEGO VOLCANOES TO THE RIGHT.
