I'm going to make a bold statement - there cannot be a better place to stay at Lago Atitlan. I've never felt so good about a place from the moment I arrived to the moment I left. Seriously, within a few minutes of arriving at this incredible hotel, Giampiero and I almost simultaneously said "this place is magical". After being dropped off at the hotel's private boat dock, you hike up 350 or so meticulously placed steps to the hotel area. Even though we were dripping with sweat and G looked like he was about to go into cardiac arrest when we reached the hotel area (just kidding, buddy), we literally couldn't wipe the smiles off our faces. The beauty of the place, the incomparable views, the warmth of the staff (all residents of the adjacent village), the hospitality of the owner/hosts, literally, everything about Lomas de Tzunana is incredible. We were only there for 1 night, but we both agreed, we could have stayed for weeks and can't wait to make a return trip. A true gem of a place. If you're heading to Atitlan, I can't imagine a better place to stay. I'll add more later, but for the time being, check out Giampiero's write up on Lomas de Tzununa, found here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/da2b/196d00/3/ He pretty much hits the nail on the head. Oh yes, the food is great (made with all local ingredients). I had local fish from the lake. It was lovely. They also make a mean Campari and orange juice.
Some of the best views in the world, incredibly gracious hosts, and lovely food (made with local ingredients)... a magical place! Private (more expensive) or the public boat will drop you at the private dock. Then, its 350 steep steps up to the hotel. Its a little strenuous, but it is well, well worth it!Website: http://www.lomasdetzununa.com/ Other Contact: reservas@lomasdetzununa.com

La Iguana Perdida by JenniferG A beautiful located hostel right at the lake side. They have all cabins which are mostly double rooms but they have also two dorm rooms with up to 6 beds. We stayed in the dorm but we were the only guests at that time. There is no electricity down here at the lake. In the village there is but not here. It makes it kind of a special experience as everybody is walking around with lanterns at night. How romatic it is to have candelight dinners al together. During the day you can order lunches here, at night they make one big dinner for everyone. You can have lunch next door at the hotel but it's closed for outsiders at night. The owner of this place is a good singer and guitarplayer. We even worked in the studio on a song about dutch girls! Unfortunately I never heard anything about it anymore so if you are there would you like to ask about it for me? I would love to hear the results of what we did there! It's a cheap place to stay. Only a few dollars a night but the meals are separate.

by acemj There are plenty of accommodations in Panjachel and San Pedro, but it's possible to find more off the beaten path lodging in some of the other villages as well. You're likely to arrive at the lake in Panajachel, so if you don't have a reservation and need a little help in doing so, just head to Calle Santander and ask at one of the tourist agencies. We just asked the bus driver on the way into town and ended up at Larry's Place in Pana. It was a great place with a convenient location, a reasonable price and an almost hot shower (that's about the best you can expect here!). Theme: Other

WE feel we made a good choice with this one.. The rooms are small but clean, with hot water ,a view and TV. The service is firts rate . I booked everything by email and even arranged for airport pickup. Good location right in town. $35.00 for the two of us!
They have a very helpful tour desk and arranged our airport pickup and shuttle back to Guatemala

We didn't book any reservations for the entire trip, but when we arrived in the afternoon in Panajachel, I did worry whether or not we might find the price/quality combination wanted. As it turned out the Hotel Dos Mundos, while a little more pricey than we hoped, provided an excellent location with the peacefulness of a garden retreat. The hotel provideds full services and has a beautiful swimming pool and garden area. The room was clean, had tile floors, and was decorated with Guatemalan fabrics around the windows and on the bed, the latter of which inspired us to get out and buy for a guest room back home. We arrived two nights before New Years, and were unable to book New Years Eve itself, so we had to move elsewhere for a night. Of the two places we stayed this was by far the most pleasant; however, it was 50% higher in price too. Panajachel has plenty of accomodations, as it turns out, so its pretty safe to skip the reservation hassle and bargain when you get to the hotel lobby. If planning a honeymoon, this place would likely be good for its reservation upon arrival though.
The Spanish Colonial motif in the individualized cottages was very nice. The arrangement of the cottages tucked back off the main street in Panajachel provided both immediate access to the action in town and on the lake, but also a relatively quiet retreat. the garden by filipdebont There was a beautiful garden near the hotel. It was great to enjoy the tranquility in the early morning. With a bit of luck you could see some humming birds; unfortunately these small birds are too small and too quickly, so I could not make a descent photo of them. Theme: Hotel

Kolibri at 1 metre from our room by chrisvandenbroucke Very spacious room around a lovely courtyard with hundreds of kolibri's which are looking for their flowers. There's a very clean shower and toilet. We paid 65 quetzales for this double. The rooms with common shower are of the same quality for only 35 Q Highly recommended Theme: Pension/GuesthousePrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensive

I would highly recommend this family-run hotel for those looking for a quiet, peaceful, and comfortable stay on the lake. The hotel is somewhat isolated. It is a good 40min. hike (quite hilly in parts) to the town of Tzununa, which is not nearly as built up as the more popular pueblos around the lake like San Pedro. It's not a problem getting a shuttle boat from the hotel's private dock to visit the other towns for the day, but the boats stop running around 6pm. Fortunately, the hotel's restaurant has a good variety of tasty food at reasonable prices. It's just a very quiet and peaceful setting, especially since when I visited there were few other guests. I can see the hotel working really well for a group gathering of some sort where you are your own entertainment. Every room has a deck with fantastic views of the lake and surroundings. Part of the reason the views are so great is that the hotel is ensconced on the hillside. There are LOTS of stairs from the dock up to the accomodations, but the staff is available to help with your bags and such, and I think there is an option to arrange for a shuttle van of some sort. Just take your time working your way up the stair and you'll be rewarded. The actual rooms are large and modern, and I had plenty of hot water. The owners and the staff are very hospitable and helpful.
Tranquility, views, nice pool, family-run Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageWebsite: lomasdetzununa.com
