Hotel Dos Mundos

Peaceful but just off the main drag in Panajachel

We didn't book any reservations for the entire trip, but when we arrived in the afternoon in Panajachel, I did worry whether or not we might find the price/quality combination wanted. As it turned out the Hotel Dos Mundos, while a little more pricey than we hoped, provided an excellent location with the peacefulness of a garden retreat. The hotel provideds full services and has a beautiful swimming pool and garden area. The room was clean, had tile floors, and was decorated with Guatemalan fabrics around the windows and on the bed, the latter of which inspired us to get out and buy for a guest room back home. We arrived two nights before New Years, and were unable to book New Years Eve itself, so we had to move elsewhere for a night. Of the two places we stayed this was by far the most pleasant; however, it was 50% higher in price too. Panajachel has plenty of accomodations, as it turns out, so its pretty safe to skip the reservation hassle and bargain when you get to the hotel lobby. If planning a honeymoon, this place would likely be good for its reservation upon arrival though.

Unique Quality: The Spanish Colonial motif in the individualized cottages was very nice. The arrangement of the cottages tucked back off the main street in Panajachel provided both immediate access to the action in town and on the lake, but also a relatively quiet retreat.
