Posada de Santiago: Moderately Priced Luxury in Santiago
  • Satisfaction:
  • Updated By CarolR on October 29, 2006
  • We stayed at the Posado for three nights and could easily have moved right in and lived there. Built of local carved and fitted stone, the hotel restaurant and each of the individual cabins is a feast for the eyes. Each cabin has hot water -- not something to be assumed in Guatemala -- and a separate faucet for filtered drinking water. Candles and a fireplace add to the ambiance of each cabin which also features a hammock and a view either of the lake or the volcano. A dormitory-style budget cabin also is available. Located just outside Santiago toward Panajab, the hotel is an easy one kilometer walk from the market. Local tuk-tuks (three-wheeled "cabs') are available for 5 quetzales a person (7.8 quetzales to the dollar). The cost for a cabin for two people was $50 when we were there in September 2006. This is about average for quality hotels in the area.

Wonderful place for meeting locals, relaxing by the pool, taking horseback expeditions up the volcano, etc.

There's a solar-heated pool, sauna, and hot-tub located across the road from the hotel which means you have beautiful views of the lake, the dugout canoes paddling by, and the towering volcano.

Perhaps the best thing about staying here is that you are helping support the local people. The owners are very active in projects helping the local indigenous people. Dave organized a music concert to raise money to rebuild the local hospital which was covered by mud during the slides caused by Hurricane Stan in 2005. Susy works with local women in a weaving cooperative. Volunteers from the hospital usually stop by here in the evenings to chat and socialize.

Ask Dave for the FAQ booklet -- a booklet he put together answering the most frequent questions people ask. He's a fascinating source of information, having built the hotel during the civil war here.

I highly recommend this extraordinary place! Luxury at this kind of affordably is completely unreal! We went as a family of 5, and had the time of our lives. The atmosphere at the Posada is laid back and wonderful. It's the kind of place that looks like a rustic paradise resort, but makes you feel like you are at home. The owners, David and Susie, are warm and welcoming. We ate nearly every meal at their restaurant and could never get tired of the freshness of these delicious gourmet dishes. David and his son Keith keep the atmosphere in the restaurant/ bar lively and fun. They spoil you with amenities. The rooms my family had were in a charming, hostel style, house with four bedrooms, a common living room, kitchen, and bath. It was perfect for us; we didn't want to go home. For more private travel (perhaps a honeymoon, etc) there are these exquisite stone cottages, each with its own wood burning fireplace, quaint garden for a hammock, and views of the lake and mountains that are to die for. The pool, hot tub and sauna are just past a large tiki hut right down by the lake. They will even serve you meals, or drinks down by the pool. Every view is breath taking. The people make you feel like family, so it's hard for me to even want to share this place with others. I just couldn't rave about it enough. Did I mention that it is also INCREDIBLY affordable? Well go see for yourself: posadadesantiago.com Have fun planning the vacation of your dreams!

There’s a gorgeous view of the volcano San Pedro that is directly across the lake from the resort. It’s just a quick Tuktuk ride to Gringo Street for fantastic shopping. There’s a gourmet restaurant that serves delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner for less then you pay for fast food. Check your email while you wait for you food, right there in the cozy internet corner of the restaurant. There's even a library nook you can borrow from for some light poolside or hammock reading. David is good friends with someone that can take you on an English speaking tour of Santiago in a tuktuk, fun! There's little tiki huts nestled in different spots for relaxing, chatting, meditating, and just enjoying life. A sparkling blue (solar-panel) heated pool, Mayan looking stone hot tub, and wood heated sauna all where they will serve you fresh blended mojitos on request. They have a private dock. So, tell your launcha driver to take you right to the Posada, and skip the hustle at the main pier. The staff is so attentive and completely forgiving of terrible Spanish. I could tell that their staff is treated well in the way that they dote on you, and to me that's a great sign of a spectacular business.
