I emailed the Casa a couple of days before leaving, just to make sure there would be a room available. I got there by taxi from the Flores airport. My room was plain but fine, and extremely quiet - except for the many birds. On day one, I used my meal voucher in the dining room (open air, with view of the lake), and on day two, I took a boxed lunch to Tikal. The Tikal minibus picked me up at the Casa at 5:30.

Oddly enough, the prime feature of this hotel is its web site, a rambling fount of information about El Peten for visitors. La Casa de Don David is a good spot to get situated when one arrives in El Peten. Don David wasn't in town during my visit, but Yohana did provide the information I needed.

  • This is a nice place to stay if you want ot visit the nearby Tikal. The bus to Tikal passes here in the morning. It is a eco-friendly place with small "huts" placed between the trees abowe the lake. I slept in my hammock in a large room, where other travellers had put up hammocks too. The huts are open with no windows or doors, so you have to place your belongings in the big boxes provided for this.

The views of the lake and vulcano are very nice and there is a terrace where you can sit and watch the sunset. The hostel serves meals, but you have to sign up for dinner if you want some. It is all vegetarian.

    I paid 15 Q for a hammock space and they charge 35 Q for a bed.

  • We had just arrived from Belize and fell for this place straight away; to be honest it was the first place we looked at, even though it wasn't the budget option I was looking for. It is situated next to the popular backerpacker hostel el Mirador. The room was outstanding, decked out in Mayan art and materials. The view from the window was amazing, every morning when you woke up your were greeted by panoramic views of the lake, and in the evening you could watch the sun setting from your 4 poster bed. But it wasn't all roses as there were some design faults with the room. The room (better described as a mini apartment as there was a lounge area as well) was basically part of a 3-roomed cabana, we stayed in the bottom apartment and when there was somebody above you could here every footstep. The other noise was kind of cool, we were awaken by a dawn chorus of howler monkeys on our final morning The proprietors were slightly odd with all there little yapping dogs but no problem really.
Also there was a wee swimming pool, which was very cool for a early morning dip, it felt like you were really in the heart of the jungle. Though $44 US was a bit more than you have to pay for a comfortable night stay in Guatemala, though would pay it again if it weren’t for the noise from the other room.

The view was the biggest selling point; but the rooms were very nicely and uniquely decorated.

  • White, stucco, thatched-roof cabanas, built Mayan style. Pablo and his wife are very cool and Pablo speaks excellent English.
Very cheap $35Q /night (~$5US). Excellent homemade vegetarian dinner.
Incredible view of lake Peten Itza.
    A must stopover for backpackers

Great views. Hosts are excellent. They have their own Howler monkeys. Cool clientele.

This beautiful Francis Ford Coppola resort is located 8 kms of El Remate (Peten Itza lake). I only visited the restaurant, but the place is amazing.

    Great lake views.

In April 09, I stayed in room #9 under the restaurant, and the staff had said the room could be noisy because of it's location. There was some noise from the overhead activity but certainly nothing very annoying. This place is outstanding and certainly recommended to anyone visiting the area. The grounds are very well kept and relaxing. The hotel location near Tikal makes it great for all activities in the area. Since we didn't speak spanish, the staff's broken english was great.

    Botanical garden
    Lake view
    Exceptional staff
    Free internet and bottled water
    Good food
    Some English spoken
