Travel Tips for Flores
cocococococonuts
by willy_wonka
after a tough walk up the mirador, the sight of a local lady chopping coconuts was the best sight i have seen in a long time! she chopped it open, put in a straw, and we got to drink the lovely coconut juice in the beautiful jungle surrounds. life doesnt get much better, or simpler! then that! :)
picture 1 - the cocochopper!
picture 2 - anna in the hat that makes kids laugh
sexo radio!
by willy_wonka
for all your sexo needs, call 'sexo tips radiooooo"!!! ok, so i didnt actually hear the radio broadcast, but seeing this painted wall in such a quiet town really did make me wonder, then laugh!
what was even funnier was that when i took the photo, my 2 friends beside me were laughing at my 'immaturity'. they were making smart remarks, about "oh anna has to take this photo, since she is such a sick puppy" etc etc etc. well, when i turned to walk away, they whipped their cameras out and took photos too!
you cant resist a good condom picture! :)
Yaxha
by JessieLang
Yaxha is about 1/3 the size of Tikal, and much less visited. The name means Green Water.
The Palace of the Red Hands is over 90 ft. tall, and the view from it is great.
The Acropolis is opposite the Palace, and two unexcavated mounds are on the other two sides. They have been excavating Yaxha for the last 15 years, but they are only 10% finished.
Many of the stellas on the site are broken—Yaxha was on the way to Tikal and under their control. Any enemies fighting Tikal went through Yaxha, on the way, and destroyed things.
Yaxha is about halfway between Flores and the Belize border. It is only about 40-45 miles from Santa Elena, but it seems like a l-o-n-g drive because the road is lousy. When we first got there, the howler monkeys were making a lot of noise, and we did see a few.
Hiring a Boatman
by calcaf38
I don't want to generalize, but the boatmen I had in Guatemala were a tad bit scary. Unlike taxi drivers, bus drivers and tuk tuk drivers, boatmen were somewhat aggressive and not too friendly.
My boatman in Flores was about 4 1/2 ft. tall, and he was as cute as the little girl with the red raincoat at the end of the movie "Don't Look Now."
ARCAS
by calcaf38
ARCAS is a non-profit refuge where animals, rescued from smuggling attempts, are reeducated before being reintroduced to their habitat if possible.
Since the very purpose of ARCAS is to acclimatize the animals to a human-free environment, you don't see animals during the visit. However, the visit is illuminating - if not uplifting.
During my visit, I talked a bit with some volunteers from London who had been working there for months.
ARCAS can be reached via a short boat ride from Flores. Your boatman will wait while you visit. The visit is free but a donation is expected.
