For U.S. $110/night this hotel included a pool, and 3 meals. The food was mediocre and hardly any hot water was to be found. Not really my cup of tea.

Panza Verde is located on the South Side of Antigua is incredibly decorated! Literally, the interior design is breathtaking. Take a look at the web site photos for more information.

Panza Verde also has a great restaurant. The chef/owner is from Switzerland. The food is Four Star as well. In March of 2004, I bought dinner there for 3 people including: 3 glasses of wine, 2 bottles of beer, 4 appetizers, 2 lamb entree's, 2 desserts, 3 cups of coffee, and TIP (10%). The total bill with tip was only $90 (U.S.)

This place rocks! The owner is from Europe so the rooms are decorated in a simple, european ambient look. Definitely recommended as it was only $40 U.S. per night. And the location was awesome! It was right in the middle of the main drag in Panajachel providing us with easy access to all Panajachel amenities.

    European feel....great service.

The first time in Panajachel we stayed in the bungalows of Riva Bella. The bungalows are situated in a lovely garden at the mainstreet of the town. The bungalows have a shower with hot water, toilet and towels. In 1987 we payed only 5 $, now they are about 30$.

In 2006 during our second visit to Panajachel we checked the place and found out that the bungalows are still there.

We liked the central location in Panajachel, at walking distance from everything.

This was a class act. The rooms were lovely and the shower had more pressure than any I have ever had. Heaven. The service was outstanding, rooms super clean and food excellent.

They have their own huge complex complete with their own lagoon. Every room has a view. There are two pools and a jacuzzi tub. Only stayed 2 nights and wished we had more. There is a game room with a pool table and ping pong table as well as small tables to play cards. Did look like there was a room large enough for group meetings.

6 Scarlet macaws call the hotel home as well as a huge enclosure for white tailed deer.

Jungle Lodge: An overnight stay in Tikal

  • Jungle Lodge 1987 - Guatemala
    Jungle Lodge 1987

We booked an excursion by plane from Guatemala City to Tikal, but decided not to return the same day, so we had more time to visit the archaeological site. We booked the Jungle Lodge, a picturesque hotel close to the entrance of the site. Originally it was built to house the archaeologists.

Some of the rooms were very basic, even unattractive. After complaints from our side -we payed for a better one- we could move to a nice bungalow. It was great to sit at the veranda of this double bungalow, to watch the lovely flowering plants and to listen to the birds and sounds of the jungle, but we got some mosquito bites too.

In 1987 there was only electricity from 6pm till 9.30pm, so we were happy we brought a torch ourselves. The bungalows have a fan and a private bathroom. Looking at the website the bungalows look upgraded nowadays. There is also a swimmingpool.

In 2006 we came by bus to Tikal and stayed in the same accomodation. This time we had the basic rooms with shared bathrooms. This tiem the rooms were OK.

    Its location !!!

  • Camino Real Tikal - this hotel is built on the edge of Lago di Peten Itza about 30 kilometres from the entrance to Tikal - but it is an amazing place. OK its' part of a chain - its' not exactly the cheapest place but it is the most luxurious in the area. It has a pool, and a deck from which you can go swimming in the lake - which was one of the best things I did in Guatemala. The water was 25 degrees and so clear - it was like getting in a bath - and swimming at 7am and having coffee on the dock! You can also use their boat to go out on the lake, take a Mayan style sauna and order pina coladas in the pool! Divine decadence!

The view, the mayan sauna, the lake itself!

Quinta de las Flores - a fantastic hotel set in a beautiful garden - on the edge of the town but still only ten minutes walk or a short taxi ride from the Playa Major.
The hotel has only 8 rooms and 5 little house which sleep up to 5 people, a great restaurant and lounge area and a really nice swimming pool. The staff are friendly and very helpful.
5 of us in a little townhouse for 8 nights, including some meals and drinks were £135 (UK sterling) each.

Beautiful gardens, outdoor (but roofed) restaurant and lounge area, swimming pool, rooms built round a courtyard, colourful painted houses with living rooms, kitchens, fireplace, private garden etc. and lots of wonderful decorative features - too many to describe here!

The view of the volcano at the bottom of the garden is a sight I'll never forget.

Isolation achieved. Its possible to use the surrounding volcanoes as your pillow. Up here, old men and small boys alike pick coffee and sugarcane until they can no more. Bring a machete though, you'll need it. Everyone just wants to say 'hola'. Newborn children speak for the first time and mother looks in disbelief. Welcolme to land of friendly people.
