Hotel Marina Copan: High End Worth the Price

Copan is a world-class tourist attraction, and so accommodations for every budget are readily available. Normally, we find modest accommodations since we rarely spend any time in our room or lounging around the pool. This was certainly the case in Copan, where we spent a rushed two days exploring the ruins and dining out. Nevertheless, in as much as we were likely to be staying in very marginal accommodation during the Lenca trail and Golfo de Fonseca legs of our Honduran tour, and since we had other more senior aged friends meeting us just for Copan, it seemed appropriate to find a very nice place to stay. Fortunately, in Honduras even the high end accommodations are very affordable.

Hotel Marina Copan is well located on a hill just a block up from the main plaza in Copan Ruinas. The hotel has wifi in the lobby, but not the rooms. The hotel restaurant is reportedly OK, but expensive, but we didn't dine there.

What's really great about this place is the colonial style architecture, the swimming pool and jacuzzi, the tile flooring, woodwork, and the incredible landscaped patio areas and fountains. One can spend each day chatting with a friend for a week and never use up all the unique patio garden foundation areas in this hotel.

We paid $104 for a double. There's a secure parking lot for this hotel.

Hacienda la Esperanza: Copan's Best kept secrect

An incredible place to stay with great service and wonderful attention to detail.

Hacienda la Esperanza is a step back in time to a Spanish Colonial home. Thick wooden beams and doors are supported by brick archways, thick walls, large airy rooms, with private baths which are encircled by verandas and terrazzos where you can enjoy the tropical breezes and listen to the parrots in the trees and the trickle of the centrally fountain. Lush gardens surround you where you can enjoy an afternoon in a hammock with a good book or you can stroll the grounds picking fresh papayas, oranges, limes, avocados or numerous fresh flowers. The staff is more than willing to help you with your Spanish, arrange for tours, and assist you with your every need. Full breakfasts are provided every morning using foods from local farmers.
Hacienda la Esperanza is owned and operated by Paramedics For Children a US based 501 c 3 children's charity, which operates a school supply program for 25 indigenous mountain schools surrounding the Copan valley, and a medical clinic for the poor. All room rates are a direct donation to the organization which in turn keeps these programs self-sustaining.
A stay at Hacienda la Esperanza is not only peaceful and enjoyable, with beautiful gardens, cool breezes and a very attentive staff; it is also a hand up to more than 2000 school children, and medical care for approximately 500 people per week. A vacation with us assures that you will not only enjoy your vacation, but you will be helping numerous people in the process.

Posada Real de Copan: Near the Ruins

The hotel is beautiful, inside and out, and is filled with sculptures and carvings by local artists. It has all the usual amenities--good beds, pool, AC, restaurant, bar, etc.

There was one little quirk--the power would go out briefly from time to time! Just consider it all part of the adventure, and stay there if it is in your price bracket.

The hotel is not in the town--it is out by the Archaeological Park, and it has a nature trail around the grounds.

La Posada de Belssy

There are many cheap accommodations in Copán. I went to La Posada de Belssy where I got a room with two beds, a TV, a fan and a bathroom. I would have liked a bedside lamp for reading as the light in the roof was quite weak, but anyway it was a good room. It was 16 dollars, or 300 lempiras per night (July 2009).
I had some laundry done and it was 50 lempiras, and 50 lempiras was also the price of the breakfast.

At the rooftop there are a few hammocks, tables and chairs. I only used the hammock for a while as I were out most of the time and also because when I wanted to lay down for a while the heavy afternoon rain came and the wind blew the water in under the roof.

Cafe Via Via: Cheap but Comfy

We landed at Via Via after a rocky couple of nights at Hotel Lauro's (Lauro's didn't have hot water, and we found 3 cockroaches in our room in our 2 nights there!). For $16/night we had hot water and a comfortable room, there's a small garden, it was very quiet and clean, at the front there's a living room area and also outdoor seating overlooking the street and mountains around town. They have a bar and restaurant at the front that was really good, they made a great margarita! Upon check-in we were served our choice of a lemonade or coffee, both are delicious there. Our first night they had live music which was really fun. The service was great, everyone on staff was very friendly. Two thumbs way up!

We loved the fun atmosphere! It was one of very few budget hotels with nice ambiance.

Hotel Brisas de Copán: Owned by a helpful family

The Hotel Brisas de Copán is well located, at the end of town closest to the ruins, and near the Parque Central. The owner was helpful, and he organized for me to get a ride to the Hedman Alas terminal on the last day at 5:00 a.m.

My room was dark, and not particularly quiet, but it was clean. The shower was inadequate and leaked a lot on the floor. There was a nice terrace for the use of guests.

Hotel Marina: Good central hotel

Nice hotel in a very central location right off the main square. The hotel is very convenient but if you end up there on the night of a local festival like I did, it's very noisy. Facilities are good.

Hotel Marina Copan: Wonderful experience in the heart of Copan

I completely fell in love with the style and architecture of the hotel, and it's gardens blew me away. The service was very good. They have very good food in the restaurant and a nice small coffee shop (the coffee is wonderful, its named Welchez coffee, and I believe it is actually produced near the town itself). There is marimba playing on weekend nights and it made everything so relaxing and calm. The rooms are comfortable and very much adapted to the hotel's unique style.

I though of this hotel as a very much extended house. It gave me a sensation of coziness and warmth. It has really wonderful spots all around to sit down to have a drink and read a good book.

Hotel Mar Jenny: Hotel Mar Jenny

When our ride dropped us off just outside Copán Ruinas, we were already welcomed by our next ride. A nice green pick-up of which the driver was the owner of the Mar Jenny Hotel. He offered us a ride if we would want to have a look at his rooms in his guesthouse. Because we were not forced to decide anything yet, we accepted this offered and 5 minutes, and nice ride later, we stopped in front of the guesthouse.

It turned out to be a very nice place to stay. Compared to other places in the village it was not expensive: 180 lempira's, or 10 dollars per night for a room with a private toilet and shower (which was very, very small...). The room was quiet small as well, but god enough ad very important: it had a fan. At the first floor of the guesthouse there also was a nice "chill-out" place with three hammocks in the shade. A perfect place for a siesta around noon, when the village is boiling.

The personnel is all one big family and they also run a small shop on the ground floor. This also is the perfect place to leave your luggage after you checked out and you are leaving for a few hours.

The guesthouse is not really centrally located, but "not centrally located" in a small village like Copán Ruinas, means that it is a 5 minutes walk to the Parque Central.
