    Carvings abound!

This place is huge... and weird... in a good way.

Run by Peggy Brinkley, this odd but beautiful hotel overlooks the entire bay of Trujillo with vast jungle hills in behind. She has been building for about 20 years but is not yet finished and I assume that by the time she finishes one project, there are many more that need upkeep.

Although this is listed as a amenities rich hotel, don't expect them to be up to 1st world standards (weight room, etc). Neat place and if you can spare the $30 USD a night rate, you can't go wrong. More of an experience than a hotel. Recommended for the experience.

The rooms feature funky sunken showers with great sculpted cement tiling. Detailed Maya motifs are carved in the wood posts throughout the hotel and inside every room.

  • The lodge from the river - Honduras
    The lodge from the river
    by epicult
"Jungle Lodge" usually means "your life savings". This is not the case here. This is a great place on the Rio Cangrejal owned by Oscar, the same guy who offers great white water rafting day trips (see me "Must See Activities" page). For an extra $10.00 USD you can stay at his lodge for the night. Price also includes a yummy dinner and the best sleep you'll ever have.

Ask him for some of his tasty Gifiti and the history of the ceramic heads embedded upon the lodges 'chill area' walls.

He'll cart you back to La Ceiba in the morning after breakfast. I can't remember if it's included in the price or not?

The best $10.00 dollars you'll ever spend... trust me!

After a day of rafting and exploring his incredible property and falls across from the lodge (you can actually swim/trek right in behind the falls if the water levels are low), kick back with some cheap beer ($1.00 USD), good food and excellent stories told by Oscar, with the constant pounding of the ever present river.

Overlooking the water and on the second floor you can score a great little spot with private bathroom for $7.00 US per person. Comes with a private bath and a nice breeze off the water to keep the bugs away.

There is also a very small internet cafe on premises, the owners are very trusting and are out-of-this-world nice! Highly recommended.

Go for a swim right outside your door.

Sandwiched between beach on one side and lush jungle on the other. You'll probably never see a tourist during your stay. Family run & very relaxing.

Hike into the jungle or take advantage of the beach all day long... your choice! About 20 USD a day gets you your own cabaña. You can walk for miles on this beach without ever seeing a single person (maybe a few cows though?).

    The Eco-Albergue El Rosario

The Eco-Albergue El Rosario is a very basic and rustic hostel-like hotel high in the mountains at the entrance to La Tigra National Park. It has nine rooms, only three of which have private bathrooms. The other rooms must share a toilet and shower which are located at the end of the hallway. There are no single rooms, so guests must share the dormitory-style rooms and sleep in bunk beds.

Meals are prepared by local people hired by a nonprofit organization that helps run the national park. The food is not particularly tasty, but it is filling. Meals are eaten around two or three tables in a small kitchen on the ground floor. The only thing to drink is coffee, tea, or juice made from powder. Guests therefore have to bring their own wine or beer.

The Eco-Albergue El Rosario is one of the most basic places in which I have ever stayed. Although the rooms were relatively clean, the mattresses were old and had lost almost all of their firmness. I therefore slept in a depression in the mattress, which left me with a headache each morning from sleeping with my neck at an odd angle.

In addition, the heaters for all the showers did not work during my stay. And because it was chilly at night due to the high altitude, no one in my group was able to take a shower.

The hotel is at the end of a rough dirt road which is accessible only by pickup truck or four-wheel-drive vehicle. A car probably would not be able to ascend the steep and rough road.

This baby could be yours for $15.00 bucks a night. That's right $15.00! It needed a little fixin' up (cleaning) but was very comfy. Unfortunately, it's not on the water but the main strip, in the central part of town. Bonus is, Trevor lives next door, so you'll never be bored :-). We wanted something on the water so made our way over to Freddie's run by the lovely Lucille and her husband Fred.

If you'd like to rent the place, talk with the woman at Celena's a couple doors down. She's very nice and will set you up.

Right on the main street. Great people/tourist watching.

    Close to everything

    Trevor lives next door :-)

    The Lodge at Pico Bonito

The Lodge at Pico Bonito is one of the best resorts I have ever stayed in. Opened in 2000, it quickly became the first resort in Honduras to be included on the "Small Luxury Hotels of the World" list.

The lodge is situated on 200 acres (81 hectares) of private forest adjacent to Pico Bonito National Park, and offers breathtaking views of the Cordillera Nombre de Dios and the 8,000-foot (2,438-meter) Pico Bonito towering above. The grounds immediately surrounding the lodge and guest cabins are meticulously landscaped with exotic tropical plants and flowers.

Guests stay in private guest cabins set amid tropical trees and bushes. The cabins are luxuriously furnished and decorated, with hardwood floors and tiled bathrooms. Each cabin has a private patio with a hammock, which is a perfect place to relax after participating in various outdoor activities in the tropical heat.

Activities at the Lodge at Pico Bonito revolve around nature which abounds in the lodge's private forest. Guests can hike on the guest-only trails, birdwatch (over 325 species have been identified in the area), visit the butterfly and reptile enclosures, climb the observation tower to get a view of the jungle canopy, relax around the outdoor swimming pool, or swim under the waterfalls on the Río Corinto.

The world-class Itzama Restaurant features Meso-American cuisine made with local ingredients. And the Carbanco Cocktail Lounge is a great place to relax with a cold drink after a busy day.

The César Mariscos Hotel and Restaurant is family-owned and operated. It features 18 rooms that open onto private balconies overlooking the boardwalk, beach, and Caribbean Sea. (Although there is one room which overlooks a paved parking lot behind the hotel and which does not have a balcony. This is the room I ended up with). Rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a safety deposit box, a hair dryer, and television. There are no telephones in the rooms, but telephone calls can be made from the front desk.

Guests seem to spend most of their time on the beach, but the hotel does offer an infinity swimming pool and a jacuzzi on the second level.

In addition, the hotel has a very good beachfront restaurant specializing in local cuisine and seafood.

The Gran Hotel Sula is centrally located in downtown San Pedro Sula, just across the street from the Parque Central. The eight-story hotel has 115 rooms with air conditioning, cable television, direct-dial international telephone service, and private balconies.

The hotel supposedly underwent renovations in January 2008, but I saw no evidence of that in March 2008, and I felt it was rather run down. Part of the renovations included the addition of flat screen televisions, new curtains and bed covers in the rooms, and a complete make-over of the swimming pool area.

The Gran Hotel Sula has an outdoor swimming pool, but it is rather small. During my stay, the pool area was very crowded with guests and their screaming children.

Dining options include the Café Skandia which has the atmosphere of an old American diner, and the Grenada Restaurant which features local and international cuisine. The Bar Oro Verde is a nice place to relax over a drink.

The hotel also has a business center with internet access and conference facilities.
