Sweet old times

I've lived 5 years in Jamaica and Silver Seas was my favourite hangout. The horsheshoe bar was notorious ( I once sat next to Keith Richards drinking milk!), the scuba diving manager and tennis teacher Cecil a darling, and so was the entire staff : the nicest people to be found in a perimetre of 500 miles. The rooms were a delight with their spaciousness (I hear they have airco now -what a pity, I just LOVED the ceiling fans!!!!- and the view is.....well, let's say you don't find a better view in entire Ocho Rios! An ex-tourism agent.

Ochos Rios - No Frills

This is an older hotel and you can tell. However the rooms and facilities are clean. The people are friendly and nice. The location is nestle back into a little cut, where you folks that are used to 5-star hotels with valet parking would not be too keen on. But hey, you're not in Jamaica to stay in your hotel the entire time are you? The rooms are clean and comfortable and the air conditioners do work.
I can recommend this place if you are a no frills, no bells and whistles type of person that likes to experience something new and exciting.
It's quiet at night and you can get some good rest as your are away from the hustle and bustle of the main strip.
But if you want to really experience Ocho Rios and some of the locals, this would be a great place to stay. This is the reason the rates are so reasonable.
I did not eat at the hotel because I like to eat where the locals eat. There is a place about 3 km away called the Jerk Center that has the best jerk chicken and jerk pork in town. It's just down the road from IRIE FM past the Texaco station.

I will say that you cannot base a hotel on most of the reviews you may see online. Some people want to be waited on hand and foot and expect every hotel to be a 'Waldorf Astoria'. Give me a break! This is a hotel in a tourist town of a developing country but with great people.

A great location for the money. I will definitely stay here on short visits to the island.

Unique Quality: The most outstanding thing about Sliver Seas, Ocho Rios is the view. The view is absolutely awesome, both day and night. The pool is nice and you can walk on the little pier, dive in the crystal clear water and snorkel from there.
One thing though, I usually can only book the hotel through one of the .com sites. I usually use Orbitz or Hotels.com.
Good luck and enjoy the view.

Phenomenal Views

The view, the view, the view, well that's the good thing about this place.
If you are looking for "Five Star" accomendations, you will be very disapointed.
The rooms are very nice size, they are basic and clean. You sure get what you pay
for here. Linen is a lil dingy, so it won't hurt to bring your own. Also bring a pillow.
There are no phones in the rooms, look on the bright side, you might need the rest.
The interior is worn and paint is peeling.

Unique Quality: Although, this place is shoddy and rundown, the views more than make up for that.
All the rooms are ocean front with a big private balcony with a phenomenal view.
The location is good also in the heart of downtown. It's five minutes from Dunn's
River Falls. Also close to restaurants and night clubs. The craft market is nearby.

Inexpensive hotel

This hotel is older and a little run-down but the rooms are clean and fairly comfortable. It's a great option for someone that doesn't want to pay the ridiculous prices of a big resort. But don't eat at the restaurant onsite because it's very expensive -- my boyfriend, myself, and my 9-yr old daughter's tab came to over $50 and we were left still hungry (no drinks ordered either)!!

The "beach" is not a traditional sandy beach but rather a sandy area above a retaining wall so you just step down some steps to get into the ocean. There are sandy private beaches you can go to nearby for a small fee ($5 or so) however. The pool is nice with the deep end reaching about 10.5 feet.

We left our valuables (passports and cameras when we weren't using them) in the hotel safe, a good idea for anyone visiting anywhere in Jamaica. Plan ahead and be careful to not leave your items in the safe if you need access to them early in the morning or late at night however because someone is not at the front desk at all times like hotels in the US.

The overall service was friendly and helpful for the most part.

More about Silver Seas Hotel

On a budget

by Jamaica4eva about Marine View Hotel

The Marine View Hotel is located in the heart of Ocho Rios.
This is a place to stay if you are on a budget and want to enjoy
Ochee. Remember you pay for what you get.

The room was basic and clean. The linen was clean. The beds were comfortable.
I had just checked out of a luxury villa and I could not tell the difference between
the "luxury villa" mattress/bed and the "Marine View" mattress/bed. The A/C was
very cold.
The towels were clean. They did not provide a washcloth, I don't know why but they
do not give you one. So it would be a good idea to bring your own.
There is a small deposit if you want a remote for the TV.
The rooms range from $35 to $65. My room was $47.
This hotel is down the street from The Silver Seas Hotel. There is a nice pool there as well as fully stocked bar.
There is a gameroom with pool tables there.
Some rooms have kitchens with a fridge and dishes.
The rooms have a tropical feel. The staff is very friendly and nice.
