Better than expected

by A TripAdvisor Member

I was a little worried about my vacation at Half Moon, Montego Bay because of some of the reviews I read. My husband and I travel a lot and we found that Half Moon was an excellent vacation spot. We stayed in the Oleander and the superior room was older but clean and comfortable. We were able to check in early and the staff was very friendly. The A/C worked fine but the TV did not have good reception and no working remote. This is a good spot if you like a quieter vacation. The food was very good and we had no problem with the service. It was slow one morning when we went to breakfast at peak time (9AM) on a Saturday. I did not feel the staff expected an additional tip to the all inclusive price, but we did tip another 10% because the staff was so attentive. I am sure they appreciated it. Everything went smoothly...from the airport transfers to the shuttle taking you around the complex. May was a good time to go because there were no crowds and the weather good. You have to get used to the humidity. Most of the dining locations were outdoors and I would have preferred more air conditioned options. I would consider revisiting Half Moon. It was great!

Great Family Vacation

by A TripAdvisor Member

We just returned from our Family Vacation May 10-16. What a great vacation on every aspect. Lodging, meals, service and of course location. I research many places and this by far jumped out the best in the lot. We choose the inclusive package which I think is the best way to go. Our stay was during the off season and the resort was pretty empty which made it even better. It was liking having our own private resort. There are many different types of accommodations so research them well. The best place to stay I think is on East Cottages or East Villas. They are quite a bit more expensive but if you can afford it's worth the money. Felt very safe and secure the whole time, since the resort is totally gated. Tons of activities to do and a lot of nothing if you prefer. Can wait to go back

Phenomenal for years

by A TripAdvisor Member

I am a mere week away from returning to the Half Moon for my 13th time, and couldn't be itching to go any more. I am now 25 and have been going since I was 14. NEVER in the 12 weeks that i have spent there have i had a complaint about the Half Moon or the staff. We stay in a villa there every year and have a private maid. The maid does all the cooking, (second only to my mother's and fiance's!) breakfast lunch and dinner, and it seems that each one is better than the last. I usually go in June or July as to beat the crowds, and it is common to walk the entire beach and see only 1 other couple or no one at all.
highly recommended

Old World Elegance Embodied

by A TripAdvisor Member

Anxiously awaiting my third visit to Half Moon in the past year, I cannot speak more highly of a resort destination. Half Moon offers that perfect juxtaposition of luxury with casual elegance, relaxation with multiple options for activity, unique and charming accomodations with modern conveniences.

I generally visit Half Moon for a 4-night stay. The convenience of direct flights from major airports and the proximity of the resort to the airport allows me to kick into vacation mode almost immediately upon arrival in early afternoon. After a warm welcome by the bell staff, guests are escorted for a private check-in, complete with a welcome tropical cocktail. Accomodations at Half Moon are unique. With the exception of the new Hibiscus Suites, each room at Half Moon has different decor, adding to the elegance, charm, and home-like atmosphere. I ADORE this aspect of Half Moon and hope it will not change. The suites are especially nice, with living areas and nice bedrooms and comfortable to luxury baths, depending on the room grade. Each suite has outdoor seating so that one may order breakfast or lunch on your private patio. When one has had sufficient sun, one can simply retire to a comfortable lounge patio chair to read and relax.

I have always opted for the inclusive plan and have found it to represent excellent value. Especially if you are traveling with a small group, it eliminates those awkward discussions about whose responsibility a given bill might be. Food at Half Moon is lovely. For breakfast and lunch, one may select from the a la carte menu or a nice buffet. I generally order lunch at the beach, the pool, or our patio. For dinner, I prefer the Sea Grape Terrace, Il Giardano or the Sugar Mill. The beach barbecue is great fun, especially for young families.

Activities abound at Half Moon, with so many options, or the ability to do absolutely nothing. I highly recommend the bike shop as a first stop so that you can fully appreciate the vast grounds of the 400-acre resort. Walking the resort from end to end is a wonderful start to my every day at Half Moon. The Dolphin Lagoon is fun, as is the beach ride on horseback. With so many activities available, members of families and groups can each pursue his/her own interests without imposing upon others. I never feel a need to leave the resort grounds, as everything needed for a perfect vacation is contained on the resort property. Kids seem to love Half Moon, but do not generally detract from the adult experience. Perhaps the management and staff just do a miraculous job of positioning people to insure everyone's comfort.

The staff is well-trained and work hard to meet your expectations, though you may find them slightly less effusive than the staff in a similar- calibre American hotel. They are not intrusive, but strive to take good care of their patrons. Tips, while included in the inclusive plans, are greatly appreciated and will be rewarded.

If you seek water slides, lots of late night entertainment, and constant t.v., this is not the place. It's beauty is the casual elegance that peppers every aspect of the Half Moon experience. If you seek a very relaxed but sophisticated and luxurious hotel with wonderful accomodations, great food, and lovely service, all at a very reasonable fare, Half Moon is perfect. As for me, Half Moon continues to be my #1 travel destination.

Extremely nice and clean for Jamaica

by A TripAdvisor Member

Beautiful! We stayed in a villa that had its own small pool that overlooked the ocean. My cousins who were 9 & 7 were bored a lot. Theres not much to do at the hotel for kids but we left the hotel to go horseback riding, climb the Dunns River Falls, and go snorekling. So it was great, but expect to pay more for activiities since they're not included at the hotel.

Villa Mawr - Montego Bay

by Teresa99

"Paradise Galore"

Check Back - I'll dig out my pictures.
Villa Mawr is in a gated community across from Half Moon Resort. The villa, the staff, the VIEW, everything was paradise.

We were waited on at every turn. Jamaica is beautiful, the people are beautiful. Can't say enough.

Half Moon Resort

by Kimbie71

I am trying to plan a wedding in Montego Bay. Does anyone have any information on the Ritz-Carlton in Jamaica or the Half Moon Resort in Jamaica? Any information will be helpful.

Thanks
Kim :-)

Kim -

Went there myself in April this year. Montego Bay is wonderful, and the RC is very nice. Very secluded, clean, and great restaurants. Room was great. Another great hotel is the Coyoba Hotel, an all suite small hotel, it is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Rooms were very spacious - liked it better than the RC myself. Best wishes!

Rachael,
Thanks for your comments. I will check out the Coyoba. So did you feel as if the RC was an upscale, luxurious hotel/resort or was it just average nice?

Thanks,
Kim

Re: Re: Half Moon Resort

by Rachaelpass

It was quite posh, nice grounds, definitely an upscale resort. A bit family friendly - I liked the Coyaba as there weren't any children...a little quieter is all. Plus, the RC has transport to the Half Moon shopping mall - an upscale shopping area - reasonably priced jewelry.

What did you think about the Half Moon property. Is that an upscale resort also. What is the atmosphere like there? Thanks again for your insight!!!

Kim :-)

The Half Moon was very nice as well. It is posh - seemed to cater alot to Golfers. Was within walking distance to the Half Moon Shopping Center.

Lots to do on property.

I spent a week at Half Moon on a business trip to Montego Bay back in 1995, and would never stay there again. The accomodations were fine, and the grounds were very nice, but the attitude of the staff, from the security guards right up to the resident manager, was arrogant and unfriendly. I wasn't footing the bill for my room, but still felt like they were nickle and diming me at every turn. My advice would be to stay somewhere else. -Rob

Where to go?

by pumpkin1222

My husband and I are planning our first trip to Jamaica, but we aren't sure where to go. We definitely want to stay at an all-inclusive, we're not big "party people", and we want some great snorkeling and possibly scuba. I have been looking mainly at Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Any information or recommendations would be appreciated.

RE: Where to go?

by Jojojo79

It really depends on what budget you have to what type of hotel you go to.
My favourite part of Jamaica is Negril, I love the cool ambience it provides.
The beach is gorgeous and it's not full of party people.

I'd reccomend Half Moon Resort in Mo Bay...great place!

I'd take a look at Breezes Runaway Bay (or a Grand LIdo, but those are a lot pricier). Lots of water sports are included in the price, including snorkling, sailing, kayaking, and scuba. If you're already certified in scuba, you can do 2 free dives each day; night dives are offered, but cost extra. If you're not certified, I think you can take a learn-to-dive class for about $75 - you won't become certified, but they teach you in the pool and then take you on a shallow (30 feet?), supervised dive in the ocean. People who do dive tell me that the ocean dives off the resort are spectacular, including a canyon area. Breezes RB also runs a golf course, has a circus trapeze, and has lots of land activities as well. RB is supposed to be less "party-ish" than the Breezes in MoBay, although I haven't been to MoBay to compare.

Half Moon Bay is nice but expensive. If golf is part of the occasion, look at Tryall, also expensive. Overall, several all inclusives of varying prices in Negril. >~!
