Best Location in Town

It is getting a little run down but it is still a bargain compared to some of the other hotels in town and....it is literally across the street from Doctor's Cave Beach. That alone makes it worth the stay.

Unique Quality: It has the best location in town. It is across from the best beach in Jamaica, in the middle of the strip, one block from the Townhouse restaurant and two blocks from Margaritaville. It comes with the Jamaican breakfast inclusive. The staff is friendly and polite and the place is kept clean. It just needs some paint.

Cheap and acceptable

A basic hotel, large rooms, decent outside seating areas, a restaurant, bar, commissary and other basic amenities. Not a place to take a romantic vacation, but safe, clean and reasonably priced.

Unique Quality: Located directly on the Hip Strip across from the entrance to Doctor's Cave Beach. Easy access to LICENSED taxis, and close to the airport. Price was reasonable, but the prices quoted are for mid-week during the summer, so they may be a bit more expensive during prime tourist seasons.

Perfect Location in Montego Bay

by american_tourister about Gloustershire Hotel

I came in from Iraq and was seriously jet lagged. I was not meeting my wife and son until the next day and needed a place for the night. Before clearing customs I went to the tourist info desk and asked them to recommend a hotel for around $100.00 USD. he asked if I wnated beach or mountains. I said i wnated the beach and I wnated it to be close to Doctor's Cave Beach.

He recommended this place. I was very satisfied. A great little hotel in a perfect location and less than 10 minutes from the airport by taxi. Directly across the street from Doctor's Cave Beach. You can't ask for a better location in Montego Bay.

Great place to stay!!!!!

My family and I stayed at the Gloustershire Hotel in December 2004 there was 8 of us, 4 adults and 4 children. We found the hotel staff were fantastic, they were friendly, helpful and very polite. They catered to all our needs and made sure we were very comfortable. The Children had a great time too. Compliments to the Chief also because we ate like kings, the breakfast buffet was great, and the meals were beautiful. We definitly got what we paid for and more. We will definitely stay there again if ever in Mo Bay.

Horrible

by TripAdvisor Member Bianca

I just came back from my 6th trip to Jamaica. We decided not to book a hotel from Toronto, so that we could get a local rate when we arrived in Mobay. We arrived in Mobay late Saturday nite and The Gloustershire Hotel was the only place available, so we decided to stay for the nite. Our room was very depressing, no colour, and old looking. The a/c stopped working in the middle of the nite, our bathroom light went out and we had no hot water. Also, carrying our luggage to our room was not easy, it was far from the front desk and we had to carry our luggage up stairs. I would not recommend this "motel" to anyone.

An Excellent Value and Super Convenient to a Great Beach!

by TripAdvisor Member Standby4321

The Gloustershire Hotel is a great value choice directly across from the entrance to Doctor's Cave Beach in Montego Bay on the "Hip Strip". The $5/person daily admission to the beach -- (get stamped if you plan to return) -- is a bargain because it eliminates any problems with vending, etc. There is some amount of reef structure which is great for snorkling.

For around $100/night, we took a large room with an oceanview balcony on the third floor with a full breakfast buffet included. It was a great choice and we especially enjoyed starting the day with plenty of fresh fruit, bacon, eggs and great coffee. There is a lot of tropical vegetation and a picturesque waterfall view from the breakfast room, which is open to the outdoors.

The open air hallways and guest rooms have tiled floors that are well-kept. We found the staff to be friendly and attentive to our needs. The air conditioner was well-sized and worked well; even a remote control. French doors and windows were in good repair and the television must have at least 100 channels to choose from. There are room safes available for $3 with a $50 key deposit.

The courtyard area features a pool and a hot tub (which is actually not kept all that "hot", but is refreshing). If you happen to take a courtyard room, there are large, common balconies with tables and chairs available on the second and third floors. Several interior rooms feature very high ceilings and have a lot of character. Breezes Super Club is right across the street.

We've read the reviews of the Gloustershire and we think the hotel gets a bad rap from people who aren't prepared for the culture of Jamaica. Yes, you will encounter plenty of hustlers on the street in this area, but we didn't find it particularly dangerous and the hotel has adequate security. There are a number of decent restaurants and places to grab a drink within walking distance.

The hotel's facilities are slightly dated, but well-enough maintained. People who want a high-end, five-star experience or the more sterile surroundings of an all-inclusive resort certainly need to pick something in that category, but we found this property to be all that we expected and a wonderful value for the price. We would definitely return.

bring your own towles and wash cloths

by A TripAdvisor Member

Not at all what I expected. I will make this quick. Staff was not friendley espically when they found out you from the u.s. If you want an extra towel you have to wait untill they wash the ones in your room!! I guess they only have one set per room. Very, very, noisey. Rooms were clean. It was most likley a very nice place in 1950. You get less than what you pay for! The doctors cave beach was the only bonus.

nasty hotel. NASTY

by A TripAdvisor Member

I recently went to Mo Bay. Was supposed to stay in an alll inclusive, but hurricane Ivan had it closed for a while. I ended up booking here at the last minute. What a mistake.

Some may say that the hurricane "made things bad". Not true. The worst things had nothing to do with the hurricane. they had to do with the way things are there, and were before the hurricane, and probalby always WILL be.

The noise level in the room was terrible. it was almost impossible to sleep. Cars with jacked up stereos were parked outside, partying every night until 2 or 3AM. The rooms were hot, and we had to be moved because the A/C was not working on the first room we were in. The pool was okay, but the hot tub almost electrocuted us. We got in, and the electical current that ran through our legs literally made my teeth hurt. We jumped out fast. they never fixed it NOR CLOSED IT all that week! (Scary!!)

the best part of the hotel was being across from Doctor's Cave beach. A nice beach, and worth the few bucks to get into it. Wednesday is the best day there, as Carnival cruise Lines is in town, and they had a beach party there. that meant people, waiters, games, and fun. The other days were mild, but also nice on that beach.

The worst part is that the people of Jamaica have NO pride. Others write that it is nice that they are "friendly". Hogwash. We walked into town three different days (about 1 1/4 miles). Just to do it. Are ice cream one day, looked at stores one day, and ate pizza hut one day down there. We were harassed constantly in both directions. We were offered marijuana, offered sex (yes, even to the two of us, to join us as a third), offered us taxi rides to the point that it felt like if we said no they would run us over to each us a lesson, and begged for money repeatedly. They make a living off of begging for money. Hundreds of people Each trip begged us for money, relentlessly. Worse than anywhere else i have ever been, inlcuding russia and South America. No pride. We saw probably 20 people pee on the sidewalk, just on our little walks. Others would walk next to you, asking if they could show you something in town, or help you stay away from the bad people (or sell you smoke). WHen you said no, they asked for money "for their time spent with you" ... which was time they spent asking you for money. LOL. they tried to make you feel like you OWED it to them because they worked so hard for you to get it from you.

the hotel was slimy. The restuarant was closed, even though no damage was done to it. the hottub was dangerous, the people outside were scary, and the area was noisy. The bugs were big and crawled all oever both rooms we were in. Don't leave any food out, by the way.

I would not go back to jamaica again. Too dirty, and the people were not nice. Friendly yes, but only friendly because they wanted something from us. money. The food was not great either, and cost a lot for certain things. the chinese restaurant was cheap, and was better tasting food than the more expensive restaurants on the hip strip.

Barbados was nice, Aruba was okay (although Americanized0 but jamaica? never again.

Great for the price!

by A TripAdvisor Member

I don't understand these NASTY comments people wrote about this place. I paid for a 3-star hotel and thats what I got. If you travel you know what I am talking about. I had a great time, rooms were clean, staff friendly and the A/C and other equippment was working. More TV stations than at most hotels. I would come back to this hotel.
