More about Beaches Sandy Bay
We traveled to Beaches Sandy Bay on March 28, coming in from Ocho Rios.
Check in to the resort was courteous and efficient. We were greeted
with a drink and a cold cloth. The resort was older than we expected,
but the rooms were clean and comfy. We were on the second floor with a
great view to the beach.
The beach at Negril is the best one we have been on in Jamaica, streching for miles to the south, into town. There was lots of room for lying in the sun, but enough places to get some shade. The only time we were bothered was when we left the property for a beach walk, and even then, a polite no thanks was enough.
The food on the buffet was okay, not as much variety as other resorts we have been to, but if you waited for freshly cook or grilled items it was tasty. The Italian restaurant was excellent as was the beach grill. We met the head chef, Iganzio, who was extremely friendly and helpful throughout our stay. GAIA to him....The only negative we have regarding the restaurants is the Jamaican attitude of the servers, yeah mon, soon come...
The entertainment was better than we have seen at other resorts and we enjoyed the different evenings themes. The bartenders were fabulous, especially Bobby, " I shot the Sheriff" at the main bar.
One of the most attractive things about staying at Beaches Sandy Bay is that it is a smaller resort, but you can use the Sandals Negril facilities next door, better buffets and the Japanese restaurant is great. Take the shuttle over to Beaches Negril and enjoy their restaurants as well.
Overall, we would come back to Beaches Sandy Bay on our next Jamaican
Best beach in all of Negril!
Just returned from Beaches Sandy Bay and had a wonderful time! I agree with all the other reviews both positive and negative. Your vacation here will be what you make it to be. The first day when we arrived we were welcomed by the staff with a handshake as we were stepping off the bus from the airport. They offered us fruit punch, champagne and cool damp cloths to freshen up with. Very nice! Then we were walked to our room by one of the staff. First problem, room way smaller than advertised. Luxury oceanview about the size of a small hotel room. Had already double upgraded and needed larger room. The hotel was overbooked and they didn't think they could help us. After calling and checking for two days (which they told us to do), my husband decided we should check out and try and find a hotel with a larger room. A larger suite magically appeared in one hour. We got a call from the manager.
Aha!The best part about this hotel is the beautiful beach. All rooms are beachfront. Could walk forever on the beach. The beach has white sand and clear blue water. Very shallow for little ones. Could walk out all the way to swimming ropes and water would not be over your head.
Calm. No waves. Perfect for sailing, snorkeling, kayaking etc. The sunsets are absolutely gorgeous. The watersports were great. They may tell you that they are booked when you go to sign up, but it pays to go at scheduled snorkeling times and see if others don't show up. You could almost always get on a trip. The kayaks, hobie cats, pool floats were almost always available. No other hotels are directly adjacent to Beaches Sandy Bay so it was nice to have beach all to ourselves.
Sandals and Hedonism II are a short walk down the beach.Pools are very small and you are not allowed to swim after 6PM daily. Main pool is right by main restaurant and stage where shows are at night. The grounds are kept perfect. Constantly being tended to by groundskeepers. Pretty flowers and foliage. Very clean. Saw several weddings here this week.
Enjoyed that. The rooms were kept spotless, but needed some repairs and major updating. The noise in the morning was unbelievable. Between the road traffic, honking, roosters crowing, people slamming doors etc. We were up at the crack of dawn every day. Hotel is next to main road through Negril. Very close to road. Mattresses were pretty old and uncomfortable. The shuttles to Beaches Negril were very prompt. It is fun to go there and use the facilities and then head back to Beaches Sandy Bay where it is more laid back and relaxing. It is pretty windy on the beach at Beaches Negril. They do have a trampoline that you can swim out to which is fun for the kids. Banana boat rides too. A larger arcade then Sandy Bay. Food about the same. The food in the buffet was o.k. Not alot to choose from compared to other all-inclusives we have been to. I would eat at ala-carte if possible to get the best food. We ate at the Sundowner one night and it was very nice. Also tried the teppanyaki japanese at Beaches Negril. They kind of did "show cooking" and told jokes. A great time was had by all!! Wished we would have eaten every night at these restaurants. Told us they were booked when we checked first day of our stay, but if you left your name they would usually try to work you in in a couple of nights. My husband walked into the Italian restaurant one night to see if we could get in, we were told it was booked, but only two tables full in restaurant. Go figure! I just don't think they have the staff to run these restaurants to full capacity. No beverages in refrigerator in room. Really missed this. The bar on beach does not open until 10:00 am. Can not get sodas until this time anywhere, but can buy them in the gift shop. Try the French Vanilla coffee in the lobby. Delicious!!The service was extremely slow in restaurant and bar. (FYI - Do not have Bacardi or Captain Morgan Rum. Mainly use Appleton Jamaican Rum.) We got used to the service by about the third day. Maybe Americans just need to relax mon!!!Downside, no beach service for drinks!! Had to get up and walk to only bar on one end of beach for drinks. Got used to that after a few days too.No problem!Delroy in the Almond Tree Grill is awesome! He was fun to chat with and always gave great food and service. The entertainment was o.k. The band was very good, but played every night.
No variety. Two nights had fashion shows selling outfits from the gift shop as the main show. One night had a beach party. Very fun! Had all the tables and chairs on the beach with candlelight. Steel drum band playing during dinner. After had beach games and a fire show. Wish we would have had more like this every night. Made it to Beaches Negril for their beach party night with the fire/limbo show. Good size buffet here. Once again, a lot more people, louder and more action. One night after band was done they had bingo in the sports bar at Beaches Sandy Bay. Won a t-shirt. yay! Oh, they have slot machines in the sports bar too. There is no disco, teen center, activities (mostly at Beaches Negril), only one bar open during day, kids program minimal. No riding games in arcade or supervision there.Met so many nice people here from all over the world. My son made friends from Chicago, England and New York. Met a family on our shuttle from the airport and had a super time with them all week.If you let things get to you at this resort they can and you will not have a good time. If you look at the positives, enjoy the scenery and culture of Jamaica, everything will be Irie!!!!
Go to Negril but reconsider your hotel options!
We stayed at Beaches Sandy Bay March 27-April 2, and I agree with quite a few of the good and bad points about the resort. The bad: The resort was overcrowded. This did not affect the beach, that was wonderful.
However, we could not eat at any of the sit down restaurants (not even at sister properties) as they were all booked... and we tried to book while checking in. So, we had to eat at the beach grill and buffet's all week. The watersports were far more limited than they led you to believe. We could not snorkel until the 4th day of our trip. We requested a crib 1 week prior to the trip, but when checking in they told us there were no cribs available! We ended up getting one, but had to throw a pretty good fit first. The Good: in a word, Jamaica!
Unbelievable beaches, calm, warm, crystal clear water (sting rays swim right up to you in the shallow water). When we did get to snorkel, it was fantastic. The best snorkeling I have experienced. Our room, and it looked like all the rooms, had a wonderful view of the sea. However, that is the only good thing I can say about the rooms (Motel 6 like, out of hot water a couple times- nothing special) Beaches Negril was outstanding: better watersports (trampeline, bannana boat rides, etc).
MUCH better pools and decks, and more activities. We ended up taking the early shuttle there, spending the day there, and then the late shuttle home because it was so much better! Overall, our Jamaica experience was wonderful, but I don't know how much of that the hotel was responsible for.
Nice Place to Stay
My wife and I have stayed at Sandals before but decided to bring our 19 and 14 year olds this time to Beaches Sandy Bay. We stayed for 7 nights in the middle of February 2004. The soft powder beaches are very nice and always well kept. The staff and management are outstanding. Bartenders, especially Kurt and Pusey were very friendly and the water sports people, especially Iran and Antonio were memorable. This resort is run like clockwork; when something is supposed to be open at a certain time, it does. The lobby is beautiful and check in was fast and easy. The housekeeping crew was timely. There is so much powder/sand around to get tracked all over the place but housekeeping gets an A for their clean ups. The gardens and walks are very well kept. There are people of all ages at Sandy Bay and the entertainment is good. The reasons I gave BSB 4 instead of 5 stars is because I don?t want people thinking you are walking into super-luxury. Our room was modest but adequate. We had a few microscopic ants on top of a dresser but we really didn?t care. People who complain about this should avoid being in the Caribbean. We did not get an upgrade so we stayed in the ?Deluxe? or least expensive rooms, closest to a busy road hidden by beautiful foliage with a water view from our balcony.. The road noise did not bother us at all at night but the air conditioner did. The 3rd floor?s A/C dripped water onto our 2nd floor?s A/C and the ticking sound was pretty loud. Instead of demanding a move to another room (which they probably didn?t have at 100% occupancy) we just threw a towel on top of our A/C. Problem solved. We tested the TV and it worked fine; the clock radio which we used did also. Our shower had plenty of hot water but the restrictor on the sink made the water come out pretty slow. The food at BSB ranged between OK and very good. I had read reviews of people saying they couldn?t find anything to eat or it lacked variety. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you couldn?t find something there at each meal to satisfy your hunger, there is something very wrong with you. Are all the meals gourmet? Nope. But no one that I spoke to at BSB had any complaints! The snack shack which I have seen berated in other reviews was great! The Jamaican patties were just as good as the ones in town. Although I didn?t try the pizza, the burgers and curly fries, grilled cheese and other things on the menu were good. There was never a big wait either. The 2 pools were smallish but clean and never crowded. If you are the type of person that enjoys laying in a lounger on the beach, you have to get out there by 7:30 and ?reserve? a space. This practice really annoys us but is very common at most resorts. By 8:30 every single lounge chair was sitting there with a towel and book but hardly any were being used.We met so many friendly Jamaicans, Canadians and Brits we could have chatted the whole day away. We really enjoyed having a few Red Stripes or a ?Dirty Banana? drink and talking about all the activities we did for the day with them. For those who did not like BSB, I?d seriously consider skipping the Caribbean altogether and opt for Disney World instead. If we were going back to Jamaica with kids, we would strongly consider BSB again. Overall we had a terrific time and we give BSB the big thumbs up!
3 1/2 stars to 4 stars
,.... we traveled w/ our 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 yr olds......food was edible, if you want great food go to Taivent' in Paris.....BSB was quiet and relaxing, there could have been more activities for my children, Beaches kind of dropped the ball there.... Beaches Negril has more to offer and they do have full trade privleges, food was better there as well, but BSB is less expensive so there are pluses and minuses , there are also trade privleges w/ Sandals, the people were very nice except the bar staff who were a little grumpy....over all we a had a nice time, if you are looking for a little higher end locale try Beaches Negril....still a great place to take your family
Go somewhere else!!
Just got back from a 10 day holiday at this resort (January 2004). This was our first stay at a Beaches/Sandals resort and we were extremely disappointed with the whole thing. This is not the 4 star resort portrayed in the Beaches website and by the reservations agents AT ALL.
The food was absolutely atrocious and cold most of the time, so much that we ended up eating boiled potatoes most days and had to get peanut butter and bread from a supermarket to feed our 3 year old (who by the way is not a picky eater). The service was not as good as some of the reviewers have said here. Sure some of them were nice but in general they were rather rude. The pools were very small compared to how they appear on the website. Prepare to be offered all types of drugs if you leave the resort to go for a nice walk on the beach or to visit the nearby Sandals or Beaches Negril. My only compliment to this resort goes to the nursery staff who were excellent. So if you are not used to nice hotels, want to eat bad food everyday, but want to spend some time on a nice beach and have your children well looked after this is the place for you. Also, to anyone thinking about getting married there: the gazebo is right in the middle of the resort so it does not make for a very intimate setting. Not very romantic at all.I would definitely not reccomend this resort to anybody.
too many banana hammocks! GROSS!
Discouraged from the start! Food was bad! Great on the wine refills the first night! Way too many Europeans in speedos and overweight old women in bikinis. They must have been handing out childrens' bathing suits to the senior citizens group as they climbed off of Air Germany. We witnessed old drunks at the beach bar hitting on the staff at 4:30 in the afternoon! The staff piled the dirty plates right next to our table while eating and the flies were unbearable! Visited Beaches, Negril and it was much better, but after two days, it got old and the food is not as available as they tell you! The buffet is not enough of a variety!
The peddlers get to you on the beach and the jet ski sports salesmen are territorial!
We Found Our Ultimate Vacation Spot
I had read some reviews about Beaches Sandy Bay in Negril and was some what reluctant to go there after booking our trip but I was very surprised and extremely happy with everything there. We fell in love with not only Sandy Bay but also Negril. The food was awesome. The beach was fantastic and the service was very good. Despite the ordeal getting from MoBay to Negril the whole trip was worth it. Although service does seem slow to alot of people, hey, you are on vacation and in a foreign country. You have to just relax and deal with being in another culture, kind of what we expect of people visiting our country. I highly recommend Negril and Beaches Sandy Bay. We did spend a few hours at Beaches Negril and we were both disappointed at the larger resort. It just didn't have that "home" feeling.
as for shopping, learn how to haggle with the residents of this island-they enjoy it and i found some great things at good prices
Beaches Sandy Bay
My family is going to Beaches Sandy Bay in December 2007. Has anyone stayed here before? What class of room is the best. We have OV 1 bedroom reserved.
