Avila Beach Hotel

Perfect location, Great Staff

During a visit to Curacao, we initially stayed at another property about 15 minutes away which was a typical all-inclusive, crowded, run-down money trap. The Avila was none of the above.

The staff are, like a good ref in a hockey game (sorry for the analogy), so good you hardly notice them. They’re friendly but leave you alone when you wish, to enjoy all they have to offer.

One of the cool things about the hotel is that all rooms are not alike. Make sure you check on exactly what you are getting. This does not mean that any rooms are below standard but there is a wide variance. The property is fairly large so while I was there I never felt cramped (it takes approx 5-6 minutes to walk end to end).

The rooms were clean, bright and well-appointed. Beds were not superb, but comfortable enough for a good nights sleep. TV channels were minimal, but who goes to Curacoa to watch TV?

The food was served in an open tented area, so you can choose to eat on patio or under shade. There was a wide range of foods available, slightly above average. It does not stand out in my mind as a big selling point, but was certainly tasty. The atmosphere & view of vast expanses of white sand & blue water made up for any lack of excellence.

The best part of the Avila is the beach & pier. The beach is fairly small, but white sand abounds and the water is crystal blue and warm. There are larger waves, as I recall losing my bathing suit momentarily in the surf - all part of the fun.

The pier is very cool. At the end sits a cabana bar/restaurant where many guests spend their evening. It sits on 2 levels, and the ambiance is unforgettable as you can sit & enjoy cool evening breezes, surrounded by the ocean, under a starlit sky, sipping your favorite cocktail.

All in all it is in the top 3 hotels I have stayed at in the Caribbean. I have to say above all it made me feel special. Many resorts leave you feeling like a number but the Avila’s gave attention to detail and was sufficiently un-crowded to make you feel like a true "guest.
