Riffort was built in 1828, on the Otrobanda side of the harbor entrance, to compliment the Waterfort or Fort Amsterdam (on the Punda side) and defend the outer section of Otrobanda. These two forts have guarded Curacaos harbor against pirates and enemies for centuries. Riffort was constructed to store the chain with which the harbor could be locked up. The chain could be transported from Otrobanda to Punda with an unsinkable raft. The Riffort had its own barracks, canon, powder magazine and rainwater storage tanks. It was considered completely bombproof.
During World War II a steel net was stretched across the bay between Waterfort and Riffort to prevent enemy ships, especially submarines from entering the harbor. In the course of time the Riffort has housed the Authority, Public Works, the police and even Boy Scouts have found shelter here.
Nowadays it houses a modern shopping mall and a restaurant whose terrace overlooks the harbor.
The pontoon bridge was built in 1888 and connects Punda and Otrobanda. It swings open to let ships pass the canal in and out of the harbour.
If the bridge is open, free ferries shuttle between the two parts of town.
Fine restaurant on the Otrobanda side, overlooking the water and the Punda side. Good food and service. Somehow expensive but a great experience. Wooden chairs uncomfortable.
It was fun when we were in the middle of the bridge and the alarm started warning the it was opening. In fact it turns counterclockwise pivoting on the Otrobanda side and separating from the Punda side. Interesting bridge, illuminated by color neon lights during the night. By the way, if you stay at the Marriott or Hilton, it is easier to park or take a cab to Otrobanda and cross the bridge by foot to Punda.

Hi !
We would like to go for 2-3 weeks in Jan/Feb 2009 in Curaçao Island. We don't like big hotels, so we're looking for guesthouse, small hotel, appartements, better on the noth-west coast of the island : have you some recommandations ?
Is there any supermarket/store in this region and do we need a car or public transport are good ?
Thank you very much for your reply !
HI I am the right person to answer you.
I ussually stay at Pieters Guesthouse in the Mainstreet Otrobanda.
There are constantly riding busses there.
And Otrobanda has supermarkets and also foodshops like Subway/Pizza Hut/Haag en Daz and much more, very nice clothes and cheaper than the other side Punda.
I have a friend that lives there and she is a travel agent.
If you need any help booking your trip and stay there just let me know and I will let her contact you.
You will probably need a car. Only the bigger hotels have shuttles into town. Although the hotels really are not that big there. It is not like Aruba or Cancun with mega resorts. Most of the resorts there are pretty cozy. our reports are at http://www.dave-lori-home.com/travel_diary.htm
