Great shopping
by myfuninthesun
If you are looking for bargains, the Dutch side of the island is the place to go. The French side is beautiful but shopping is expensive. We have been here many times on different cruises. One time, no one knew (until we arrived) but it was St. Maarten Day, so no stores (not even 1) was open. Most people just got back on the ship but we followed the sound of the drums from the local parade and were treated to a glimpse of the local culture.
Do you want a Henna Tattoo?
by saraheg77
If you want a tattoo, but not a permanent one, the beach was a good place to get a henna painted tattoo. Here is my fiancé getting a nice arm band tattoo. This girl was sitting in front of a little restaurant close to where the water taxis dropped you off. She had good prices on henna tattoos and did good work. They last about 2 weeks.
Philipsburg - the Dutch capital
by adinda
We didn't like Philipsburg very much. Lots of shops selling well-known brands, but it all seemed like last year's collection. Lots of cruise ship passengers wearing tags showing from which ship they came, all looking around for that one bargain. A market with all the stalls selling the same colourful drapes, who look great on darker people, but hideous on us pale people. That's not my kind of holiday. So after a drink at a nice bar, we decided to leave this town. The picture shows the famous Philipsburg liquor store, OK, so there was something positive about this town!
Approprite Dress and Manners
by cjg1
It is considered rude if you walk into shops with inappropriate attire. Beachwear such as swimsuits should be covered up and you shouldn't be flashing tons of flesh. Looking respectful will get you the "right" attention from locals and shop employees. We were in a shop when a woman came in wearing what appeared to be a small bedsheet over her bathingsuit. The looks on the faces of the shop staff gave away exactly what they were thinking.....Save the beachwear for the beach and dress correctly when shopping.
Be polite when entering a business or shop and say Hello or Good Morning; use please and thank you. Good manners will help get you good service.
The French side
by HispanicYob
We were warned constantly of the nudity in St. Maarten's French side. I didn't really see much except for some co-workers who got int he spirit. This was taken on our boat that took us to a nice little beach on the French side. The waters are amazing to dive into. So clear and pristine.
