Travel Tips for Willemstad

Dutch Influences

by Tetreus

Established in the mid-1600s, Willemstad’s covey of structures recall the quaint designs of Amsterdam, with exquisite 17th and 18th century Dutch colonial buildings not to be found anywhere else outside of the Netherlands.

In time, as Willemstad’s traditional styles were modified to accommodate the island’s dry and breezy climate, Caribbean accents such as verandas, porches, fretwork, and shutters were added. The color scheme was updated as well, introducing a bright, bold palette unheard of in the mother country.

Additional Dutch influences include:

Street Layout—Willemstad’s Otrobanda district is full of narrow alleys and wider main streets, reminiscent of 17th century Dutch provincial towns.

Plaza—For centuries, plaza’s have had many functions—most notably they were used for dining, trading, festivals, and ceremonies. Nowadays, several plazas are in use as open-air markets in Otrobanda.

Gabled Roofline—Steep-pitched tile roofs and neck- and Dutch-gable ends are hallmarks of classic Dutch urban architecture. These elements sit beautifully in the restored 18th century mansions of Scharloo and Pietermaai, and in the buildings along Schottegat Harbor.

Avila Beach Hotel

by Jagermeister

"Wonderful Honeymoon Experience"

My new bride and I spent twelve days at the lovely Avila Beach Hotel just ten minutes away from downtown Willemstad by foot. We stayed in the "Blues" section of the hotel, which offered fantastic rooms built over a pier-like structure that all had fantastic views.

We were possible the only Americans at the hotel at the time. Mostly Dutch folks visiting their old island. The "native" people from Curacao were amazingly friendly and not pushy in the least. I made fast friends with the "native" employees of the hotel.

The food was good at the Avila Beach. It was great on Antillean Night where they served "local" food.

Snorkeling was great as well as the Avila Beach had created a lagoon protected from the sea by making a wall of rocks. Snorkeling around the wall into the sea was possible as well.

The walk to downtown Willemstad took maybe ten minutes. I loved the colorful buildings which lined both sides of the pontoon bridge in Punda and Otrabanda.

Those coming to Curacao on a cruise will enjoy the laid back atmosphere. There is plenty to do and see, mind you, but you will not be harassed to buy this and that when on shore.
