A small promenade with some local restaurants, located at the shores of Lago Managua with nice views of the lake. Some told me that is very popular among the Managuans during week.ends but it was completely deserted during my visit. Again the ghost town feeling.
Our group flew into Managua the evening of January 24, 2004. I was very surprised at the terminal. It was very nice and had obviously recently been remodeled. We got a much better look of it during our departure two weeks later.
A couple of interesting things I couldn't see that evening were the Masaya volcano spewing smoke a few miles away and the large gun emplacement near the main runway.
We didn't spend much time in the Managua are at either end of the trip, opting for a tour of the volcanos and the San Catarina scenic overlook.
One the return trip we spent the night in the Best West Hotel directly across the highway from the airport. It was a lovely hotel with a large number of little duplex cabins. There were two pools and a large covered outdoor dining area. The food was excellent, as well.
