Laguna de Tiscapa.
This volcanic lagoon formed in the crater of the old Tiscapa Volcano, is one of the city most important sights. It´s located in the middle of the Old and New Managua. Used to be a popular place for visitors during week-ends, now the lagoon is heavily poluted. There is a canopy line from the top to the shores of the lagoon.
During my trip trough Central America from Guatemala to Panama I made a one week stop in Managua, Nicaragua to visit my friends Mario and Oscar. I lived in Oscars house with him and his wife. Mario used to come and pick me up in the afternoon to show me Managua at that time of the day. Oscar and his family showed me Managua at daytime.
Managua is the capital city of Nicaragua but in many ways it is very different from a ordinary city. You dont find any real city centre with streets and lots of shops etc.
The place is very spread out with shops here and there.
The reason for this is the terrible earthquake that hit the city in december 1972 and laid most of it in ruins. What used to be the city centre was never built up again. Whats left of the former centre is now just a old cathedral standing as it has done since the earthquake... It was never taken into use again.
In what used to be the centre of Managua are now a few governmental buildings, build after the earthquake.
Most people makes just a short stop in Managua but if you happen to be there its worth going to the old centre and take a look at the old church standing there. Its been out of use since the earthquake.
