Trash Everywhere

Nicaragua was the 53rd country of the world I have visited and nowhere else have I seen so much litter, although some other Central American countries are almost as bad. Trash is virtually everywhere - tons of it - paper, plastic and more, along rural roads, on city streets and in open fields. This eyesore is very distracting and is probably a health hazard as well.

I did see a billboard or two encouraging people not to litter, and on one city street I saw a man with a wheelbarrel and shovel, cleaning out the gutters. I also saw able bodied people, young and old, carelessly tossing trash onto the street. It will take an enormous effort and perhaps a whole new national mindset to clean up Nicaragua.

My husband was born in Nicaragua.
We have built a second home there atop a mountain overlooking
the city of Managua and the lake.
Nicaragua is a beautiful country. Probably the most beautiful
of the Central American countries. It is largely undeveloped,
therefore offering a more natural setting for Central
American travel.
