Two weeks in Nicaragua

by Spacemanspiff

I've got two weeks to spend in Nicaragua. I'm flying into Managua but am thinking of heading right out to Leon or Grenada for the first night. Anyone been to Managua? Will I miss out if I skip the Capital City?

Hi Chris,
I arrived in Managua by bus from Honduras. I had read a bit about it and planned to stay a couple of days but travellers I met on the bus were going on straight to Granada (after a long wait for a transfer van, at the bus station) so I went with them.

Spent 3 good days in Granada, then had an unfortunate incident on 4th day from which I escaped safely. But it unsettled me enough that I cancelled my plans to go to Bluefields then Managua. I went on to Costa Rica, Panama and sailed to Colombia.
From what I just read about Managua on Wikipedia, I think I missed out by not seeing it. Granada has a lovely Colonial centre and lots of ambiance, but 3 full days were fine.
I also suggest giving Ometepe a good look. Small island with lots to see and great place to relax.

Thanks Alza, Maybe I'll fit in Managua at the end of the trip, Ometepe should make it into the plan. Possibly ataste of Honduras as well. Cheers, Chris

La Loma. Sandino Statue.

by euzkadi

This historical Park is the place where the Presidential Palace used to be, it was destroyed by the 1972 earthquake, the place also was used as a prision for the Somocista´s followers. Actually there´s a huge statue of the famous Nicaraguan leader Sandino, and some historical monuments.
